ing out seven batters.
Game two was almost a fac
simile of the game one route with
several big hitters throughout the
batting order.
Olivia Duncan went 4-for-4
with four RBIs, while Sam
LaZear was 3-for-5 with an RBI
and Gibson went 2-for-4 with
two RBIs.
Others joining the hit parade
were Brandi Osborne (RBI
double), Peeples (2-for-5).
Gibson (18-1) pitched three
innings to earn her 18 th victory of
the year. The senior has passed

mark set by Sarah Tippins in
2004.
Madison County has now won
21 of its last 22 games. Two
more victories would advance the
Raiders to Columbus for the first
time since 2002.
The program made three-
straight trips to the quarterfinals
from 2000-2002, but hasn’t been
back since.
Kesler is stressing that his
continued from page IB
squad needs to seize the moment.
“There’s no guarantee for next
year,” he said. “You don’t know
what's going to happen next year.
We're here right now. Let’ make
the most of it. Let’s not look
back and have any regrets.”

Raiders rule

The region softball tournament
affirmed what everybody already
knew: The best team in Region
8-AAAA resides in Danielsville.
Madison County downed
Apalachee 3-0 this past Friday
in Danielsville afternoon in the
8-AAAA finals to win the pro
gram's first region championship
since 2001.
“It's just great for the girls to be
able to carry that with them ... It’s
good for our program and good for
our girls,” coach Doug Kesler said.
This is the Raiders’ first title
since moving up to Class AAAA
in 2002.
Madison County was the most
dominant team in Region 8-AAAA
during the regular season — not
losing to any school on either side
of the league — and it showed dur
ing the 8-AAAA tournament.
The team went 3-1 in the
three-day event, beating Heritage
and Loganville in the first two
rounds and then prevailing over
Apalachee in the second game of
the 8-AAAA finals.
Madison County dropped the
first game to the Wildcats 4-3 in
extra innings but rebounded to win
the rubber game.
“I told them, "hey, we haven't
lost two games in a row all year
region: MCHS beats Apalachee for 8-AAAA title
Madison County now has its first
region title in eight years. The 2001

tournament to win the region title. Ben Munro/staff
and we're not going to start,”’
Kesler said.
Madison County started the
tournament by beating Heritage
9-2 last Wednesday to move on to
the semifinals against Loganville.
There, Madison County scored five
times in the top of the eighth to
win 5-0 and advance to the region
championship game.
The victory extended Madison
County's winning streak to 18
games.
That winning streak ended
a day later when the Raiders
fell to Apalachee, 4-3, in extra
innings in the first game of the
8-AAAA finals. Madison County
battled back from a 3-0 deficit, but
couldn’t win the tie-breaker in the
eighth.
But the team rebounded by
jumping on Apalachee early in
the second game, getting a two-
run single in the first inning from
Olivia Duncan and never relin
quishing that lead.
"I think that was good for our
kids psychologically,” Kesler said
of the early lead, noting that the
quick scores likely had the opposite
effect on Apalachee.
Madison County added an insur
ance score in the third with a two-
out RBI single from Erin Gibson.
It was all the offense Gibson (16-
1) needed.
The senior threw another com
plete game shutout, her second in
as many days, as she surpassed
Sarah Tippins (15) for the most
victories in a season.
team went on to finish second in
the state and Kesler said there’s a
lot of parallels between this team
and those ’01 Raiders: no stars, but
a lot of good players and plenty of
team chemistry.
"Definitely, the '01 team had
some good leadership and that's
something we have here," Kesler
said.

MCHS freshmen
earn first win
Thanks to an early 45-yard
touchdown pass from Bo
Hardman to Michael Burden,
the Madison County (1-3) fresh
men team is finally in the win
column with a 6-0 victory over
Monroe Area last Thursday.
“The defense played good
and the offense did, too,” coach
William Trimier said.
The defense held up in the
second half, stopping Monroe
Area in the red zone after the
freshmen Purple Hurricanes
recovered a fumble on Madison
County’s own 20.
“They did a good job on
defense,” Trimier said. “We had
a good week of practice. The
team worked really hard and
they were ready to hit somebody
and they stayed focused on get
ting the job done,”
Jordan throws
three TD passes
in 21-15 win
The Madison County junior
varsity team won as well last
Thursday, beating Monroe Area
21-15 behind three touchdown
passes from Alex Jordan.
Two of those scoring strikes
went to Trey Burton and the other
went to LaShawn Willingham.

Heritage’s 1-5 record.
“They’re very athletic,” Owens
said. “Our kids are going to have
to not look at the record but look
at what you're seeing on the film
and the athletes that you have to
lineup and compete against.”
Heritage also benefits from hav
ing had an off week this past
Friday. The Patriots haven’t played
since a 35-24 loss to Loganville
Oct. 2.
“They’ve got two weeks to get
ready to focus on us ... We’ve got
three days,” Owens said.
Madison County is still tied with
Clarke Central for second place in
the region, while Apalachee is
first. So the Raiders are still in
position to have a winning season
and claim a playoff spot, but they
need a victory Friday to keep
pace.
“It's still out in front of us,"
Owens said. "With three games
to go, we've still got an oppor
tunity for a winning season and
an opportunity to get to the state
playoffs. (But) we don’t have a
lot of cushion. We don’t have a lot
continued from page IB
of slack.”
Meanwhile, Madison County
preps for one of its longest road
trips of the year. The bus ride to
Conyers is approximately an hour
and 45 minutes.
Playing an away game in high
school football is never easy,
Owens said, because of “the has
sle of traveling.”
"At the high school level, it’s
more like being a daddy tying to
get everything packed in a mini-
van to go to the beach for a week,”
he said. “You hope you don't for
get something. It’s challenging."
