OCTOBER 22, 2009 — PAGE 9A Social News What’s happening Adams benefit set for Saturday in Daniels ville There will be a Travis Adams benefit on Saturday, Oct. 24, to help him and his family with medical and other expenses. A car, truck and motorcycle show will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. ($10 registration fee) in Madison County Memorial Park in Danielsville. A poker run will be held from 10 a.m. to noon (registration fee $10). Registration for the poker run will be held at AC Auto. Hwy. 29 in Hull, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Live music will be furnished by the Bobby Compton Band and concessions will be available. Awards will go to the top ten cars and the top five truck and bikes, organizers said. Adams was severely injured in an accident at the river on his 34 th birthday, June 17, 2009, and was paralyzed from the neck down. He was Life-Flighted to Grady Memorial Hospital where he has undergone surgery for a broken neck, according to a press release. He is expected to leave Grady soon for Shepherd Rehabilitation Center. A fund has also been set up at BB&T Bank branches in Danielsville, Hull and Athens, under the name Bonds Marine Sales Travis Adams Fund. Red Hatters hosting blood drive The Scarlett O’Hatters and Magnolia Belles chapters of the Classic City Region of the Red Hat Society are hosting a blood drive at the Athens Donor Center throughout October. The blood drive is in honor of Marie Sparks, a Danielsville member who was recently diagnosed with stage IV bone cancer. On Sept. 25, several members kicked off the blood drive by donating blood themselves. The Athens Donor Center, located at 3525 Atlanta Hwy (at Timothy Road, in the Academy Sports shopping Center), is open for blood and platelet donations on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from noon until 7 p.m. and on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. “Call 706-546-0681 ext. 233 to schedule an appointment to save a life,” organizers said. “The need is constant. The gratification is instant. Give blood.” SCV to meet Oct. 26 The Madison County Greys, Camp 1526, Sons of Confederate Veterans will meet Monday, Oct. 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Room of First Madison Bank in Colbert. The public is invited. “The program will be the surprising history of the Confederate Battle Flag,” organizers said. The Sons of Confederate Veterans is fraternal, historic and honor society made up of descendents of Confederate Veterans. Membership is available to all eligible men age 12 and up. Shelter holds second annual “Frightening Feline Fest” The Madison Oglethorpe Animal Shelter announces its second Annual Frightening Feline Fest. The shelter will be open for an evening of fun games and treats on Fri., October 30, from 6-8p.m. There will be fun for all ages, including face painting, temporary tattoos, fortune telling, and, of course, plenty of treats, shelter officials said. “Last year’s event was so much fun that everyone wanted to do it again,” shelter director Susan Fornash said. “We have even more fun activities this year, and we encourage parents to bring their children. Dinner will include chili, vegetable soup, chicken noodle soup, bread, drink and a dessert, all served by a Girl Scout. Comer Christmas parade, festivities set for Dec. 5, 6 Plans are under way for the annual Christmas celebration in downtown Comer, set for Saturday, Dec. 5, with the highlight being the annual Christmas parade at 2 p.m. Parade activities, which will include seasonal music, will begin at 1 p.m. at the grandstand downtown. The theme for the parade this year is “Christmas in Comer, the Old Made New." Of course, Santa Claus will be in Comer to greet everyone, young and old, organizers said. JOHNSON, MISS WOOD Wood, Johnson to marry Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Wood, of Comer, announce the engagement of their daughter, Kelli Wood, to Kenny Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Johnson, of Danielsville, Ms. Wood graduated from North Georgia College with a degree in political science. She is employed as a buyer for Nakanishi Manufacturing. Ms. Wood is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Thomason, of Ila, and the late Mr. and Mrs. Harry Wood, of Comer. Mr. Johnson graduated from Madison County High School and is employed at Nakanishi Manufacturing as a mainte nance technician. He is the grandson of the late James and Pauline Johnson, of Colbert, and the late Herman and Edna Armstrong, of Athens. A May wedding is planned.
