CLEGHORNE FAMILY CEMETERY DEDICATED
Descendants of William Cleghome were on hand Saturday,
Oct. 31, for the dedication of Cleghome Cemetery, located
on Joe Cooper Road near Ila. The cemetery is situated on
land which has been passed down to Cleghome’s descen-
dents for more than 200 years. According to family mem
bers, the land is part of an original U.S. Government grant
signed by President George Washington in recognition
of Cleghome’s service in the Revolutionary War. In 2006,
Thearon Fitzpatrick Chandler, a Cleghome descendent and
a World War II veteran, deeded the cemetery and an adja
cent parking area to the Cleghome Cemetery. The granite
monument was erected this year in memory of Chandler by
his family. Margie Richards/staff
