Girls 5 baskeball... continued from page IB action Tuesday (Dec, 1) at 6 p.m. against region power Salem at home. Salem went 23-3 last year and didn’t lose a region game until being upset in the 8-AAAA tournament. ‘That will be a big barometer for us to see how far we’ve come and how far we have to go," Lampe said. “I think they’re the cream of the crop for our region.” The shuggle behind the arc during the first two games has been a bit baffling. During the preseason, Lampe figured that the perimeter game would be the Lady Raiders' shong suit, while the inside game might lag early with Courtney Freeman’s presence being missed. Instead, it’s been the opposite. Six-foot junior Kayla Freeman, Courtney’s younger sister, led Madison County offensively in both games, scoring 14 against Southwest Atlanta Christian and 17 against Newton County. In addition to Freeman’s contributions, 6’1” junior Elizabeth Whieldon has played “huge minutes,” while 6’0” senior Kiedreuna Chappell brings “huge intensity” to the floor, grabbing rebounds and loose balls. ‘The post (has played well) all the way around,” Lampe said. The coach only expects the post play to improve as Whieldon and Chappell grow more comfortable, which should create more opportunities for Madison County’s outside game. And he does expect that the outside shots will eventually fall. “Everything has been part of our offense ... Some (shots) were halfway down rattling out,” Lampe said. "I'm watching it on tape and I’m like, ‘oh my gosh, how many close ones are you going to have?”’ Still, Lampe isn't hitting the panic button, pointing out that it's still early. He said that he attended a Georgia Lady Dogs basketball game Sunday in which UGA’s perfor mance mirrored his own team’s the previous night. In fact, Lampe said Georgia coach Andy Landers’ postgame comments could pertain to his own team. “He said, ‘At this stage of the season, you’ve just got to ride with your young kids. They're going to get better... Now’s the time to improve their game,”’ Lampe said. Lampe, who’s won 50 of his first 64 games as Madison County head coach, expects it will take a little time for his third Lady Raider team to settle in. “By Christmas time is really when I look for this team to really have improved quite a bit,” Lampe said. Boys’ basketball... continued from page IB ous alley-oop dunk from McCrary. Madison County led 37-22 at halftime, then out- scored the Warriors 23-11 in the third quarter. Bradley Raines added 12 points and nine other Madison County players also got into the scorebook in the rout. “We got everyone involved,” Crouse said. "It was good. Everybody is beginning to understand what their job is.” In the victory over Towers, Madison County had four players reach double figures, led by Stan Maxwell who had 20 points. Madison County only led 32-25 at intermission but used both its 1-3-1 zone and man-to-man pres sure effectively in the second half to pull away from the Titans. “I just think we were able to wear them down some with our defense, which is not something we have been able to do in the past," Crouse said. “But our players are a little more athletic; our bench is a little deeper.” Meanwhile, Trae Burton helped stretch the lead out with three three-pointers midway through the quarter. Burton finished with 14 points. “We came out in the second half and played well," Crouse said. Other top scorers were McCrary (16) and Raines (14). Madison County enjoyed a solid shooting night, hitting 7-of-13 from three-point range and 14-of-34 overall. The Red Raiders also shot 65 percent from the free throw line (22-of-34), which Crouse said is getting closer to the team's target of 75 percent. The biggest problem in the first two games? Turnovers. The Red Raiders committed 24 against Southwest Atlanta Christian and 27 against Towers. While the team still has improvements to make, the 2-0 start has the Red Raiders energized. “Yeah, I think they're excited,” Crouse said. “I think they’re looking forward to each and every opportunity we have to get on the court.” MCHS 81, Southwest Atlanta Christian 59 SACA 9 13 11 26 — 59 MCHS 23 14 23 21 — 81 Scorers: R McCrary 30, Raines 12, Maxwell 9, Parrish 7, Butler 7, Robinson 4, Burton 3, McGuire 3, T.
