Nominations sought for area resources The Northeast Georgia Regional Commission (NEGRC) will hold a workshop on Tuesday, Dec. 8, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 in Athens about nominating Regionally Important Resources (RIRs). The NEGRC is currently devel oping its Plan 2035 that will include a plan for the protec tion and management of RIRs in Northeast Georgia. An RIR is a natural or heritage resource that is of sufficient size or important to warrant special consideration by the local govern ment having jurisdiction over the resource. The NEGRC is accepting nomi nations for RIRs through Jan. 31, 2010, from individuals, interested organizations and governmental agencies. Designation as RIR does not make an area off-limits to devel opment or create a new regula tory requirement. It does suggest that these areas should have an enhanced level of management and careful consideration should be given to new development in the area. The workshop will provide more information on RIRs, the nomina tion process, selection criteria, and the resource management plan that will be developed for protec tion and management of identified resources. The event will be held in the large conference room at the Northeast Georgia Regional Commission, located at 305 Research Drive, Athens. For more information, visit www.negrc.org and click on “Planning.” For reservations to the workshop, contact Julie Ball atjball@negrc.org.
