The students were able to pick a favorite book character and dress up for the day and participate in the “Book Character Parade.” Also, the gifted Challenge students decorated pumpkins and wrote stories about their pumpkin’s adventures and tales. The pumpkins were dis played throughout the school for the fall festival held Nov. 6. COLBERT ‘STUDENTS OF THE MONTH (K-2) Colbert Elementary School has announced its October “Students of the Month.” Students were chosen by their teachers and other staff members based on outstanding or improved academics as well as outstanding or improved behavior. This year, students who have been selected for “Student of the Month” will earn a dog tag. WRITING ABOUT H1N1 The swine show team traveled down to Perry Thursday Oct. 16, for the Georgia National Fair market pigs and breeding gilt show. Months before the show four FFA/4-H members were asked to research and write a short informa tional paper on the “Swine Flu,” or H1N1. Brianna Roberts, junior and MCHS FFA President, was recognized for her paper titled, “How Swine Flu Began and its Impact on the Farmer.” BEEF SHOW TEAM COMPETES AT FAIR Members of the Madison County beef show team recently competed in the local beef show held in conjunction with the Madison County Fair and sponsored by First Madison Bank and Trust, the Comer Lions Club and the Madison Co. FFA Alumni. HONORS LOCAL VETERANS Comer Elementary School students held a Veterans’ Day ceremony to honor and remember veterans in the com munity. “Thirty veterans joined as we listened to student essays, heard wonderful medleys by the fourth and fifth grade chorus and enjoyed a photo slideshow honoring and remembering those who so willingly have served our coun try,” teachers said. ROTARY DONATES DICTIONARIES Third grade students at Colbert Elementary Schools were treated to special gifts from the Rotary Club. Members of the club came to the school and handed out dictionaries to the students. Using cookies, icing, candy corn and malted milk balls, first graders created a “turkey that was deli cious,” teachers said.
