Edward Braselton, 82, died on
Monday,

21, 2009, at
his home in
Braselton,
Georgia.
He is sur
vived by
his loving
wife of 48
years, Janice
Lee Martin
Braselton,
Gainesville,
daughters,
Braselton Fant, Washington,
DC, Anne Elisabeth Braselton
Miller, Suwanee, and Stephanie
Rowland Braselton Williams,
Braselton; and five beloved
grandchildren, Lydia Braselton
Miller, Mark Coleman Miller,
Jr., Henry Collier Fant, Caroline
Braselton Williams and Collier
Elisabeth Williams.
Mr. Braselton was the grandson
of William Harrison Braselton
and Susan Frances Braselton
who settled in Braselton in 1876.
His father, John Oliver Braselton,
Sr., started a family business in
1887 at the age of eight. Later
joined by his two brothers, the
“3B"s” built a general country
store that supplied people “from
the cradle to the grave."
Mr. Braselton was born on
August 1, 1927, to John Oliver
Braselton Sr. of Braselton and
Ottis Blanche McDonald of
Apple Valley. He had one broth
er, John Oliver Braselton, Jr. who
pre-deceased him.
Mr. Braselton attended Emory
University at Oxford, Emory
University and graduated with a
degree in Business Administration
from the University of Georgia.
He was a member of Sigma
Alpha Epsilon fraternity and the
Gridiron Society. He served his
country in the United States Navy
and the Georgia Home Guard.
Following college, he joined
the family business, Braselton
Brothers, Inc. and served as a
director of Braselton Banking
Company.
Mr. Braselton served his com
munity as Mayor of Braselton for
14 years and as a town council
member for more than 40 years.
He was honored as one of the first
recipients of the Jackson County
Area Chamber of Commerce
Lifetime Achievement Awards.
He served as a member of the
Board of Supervisors of the
Oconee River Soil and Water
Conservation District for more
than 42 years. He also served on
the Northeast Georgia Regional
Development Commission, as a
director of the Northeast Georgia
Chapter of the American Red
Cross, on the Advisory Board of
the Northeast Georgia Medical
Center and was a charter member
and past-president of the West
Jackson Lions Club. He was a
member, deacon and Sunday
school superintendent at Zion
Baptist Church in Braselton.
Mr. Braselton's legacy was
celebrated at a graveside ser
vice at the Braselton Memorial
Family Cemetery in Braselton on
Wednesday, December 23, at 2
p.m., and at a memorial service at
First Baptist Church, Gainesville,
on Sunday, December 27.
Memorial contributions in his
memory may be made to Eagle
Ranch, Zion Baptist Church,
First Baptist Church or Randolph
College.

Joan Cannady
ATHENS - Joan Gertrude
Cannady, 75, died Monday,
December 28, 2009, at her resi
dence.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, she
was the daughter of the late James
and Gertrude Cashwell. From
Ohio she moved to Clinton, N.C.,
where she lived until moving to
Athens in 1972. She worked as
a registered nurse at St. Mary’s
Hospital until retirement after
48 years of service. She loved
to travel the United States as
well as also visiting at least 20
other countries. Her most mean
ingful travels were visiting her
son’s family during their over
seas assignments in Japan and
Iceland, and participating in a
medical mission trip to India in
2001 for 17 days where she was
able to use her nursing experi
ence to help those in need. She
was a member of First Baptist
Church of Athens.
Survivors include her hus
band of 52 years, James Dallas
Cannady; son and daughter-
in-law, James Dallas Cannady
Jr. and Shelley Cannady, Ila;
daughter and son-in-law, Karen
Joan and Kenneth Whitley,
Danielsville; brothers and sister-
in-law, James and Lilo Cashwell,

Saturday, January 2, 2010, at
11 a.m. at Athens First Baptist
Church with Jon Appleton and
the Rev. Ron Higdon officiat
ing. Burial will be at Evergreen
Memorial Park. The family will
receive friends at the funeral
home Friday, January 1, from 6
to 8 p.m.

service.

She was born in Wembly,
England, on September 13, 1921.
She was an avid reader and dog
lover. Mrs. Hopkins was pre

of 54 years, Henry A. (Harry)
Hopkins; and a sister, Audrey
McCoy.

Tabernacle Congregational
Holiness Church. Mrs. Ledford

and William H. Ledford.

Donald Payne
COMMERCE - Donald
Payne, 67, died Monday,
December 21, 2009, at the
Northeast Georgia Medical
Center in Gainesville.
A native of Taylor County,
he joined the United States
Army and served for 23 years
before retiring as a Sergeant First
Class. During his Army career
he served as a medic. He saw
service in Vietnam where one
of his jobs was “dusting off’
the First Cavalry Division. He
became the sec
ond most deco
rated soldier of
the Vietnam War.
Upon retiring
from the military service, he was
employed as a licensed practical
nurse at Crystal Springs Nursing
Home in Commerce.
Survivors include his wife, Jo
Ann Payne, Commerce; daughter,
Deborah Joe King, Cairo; sons,
Jeff Eason, Fitzgerald, Michael
Dennis Payne, Commerce, Toby
Lewis and Kenneth J. Payne,
both of Athens; sister, Dorothy
Finn, Winder; brothers, Frank
Payne, Lawrenceville, Wyman

of Lawrenceville; and 12 grand
children.
