Madison County for so long
seemed like a cursed program.
Though the Red Raiders
haven't been to state in 13
years, there have been some
very near misses in that time
span.
Perhaps the most painful
came last year when an eight-
win Red Raider team pushed
no. 1 seed Rockdale County to
overtime in the region tourna
ment before losing.
But the years of disappoint
ment ended Tuesday.
Madison County led from
start to finish against Monroe
Area, avenging a 21-point loss
to the Purple Hurricanes earlier
this year.
Granted, there were scary
moments, most notably when
Monroe Area cut Madison
County’s lead to 48-46 with
over five minutes left in the
game.
But just when it seemed the
demons of the past would curse
Madison County again, the Red
Raiders reeled off 11 straight
points to cast off any doubt.
Then it came down to just
running out the clock, which
seemed to take twice as long as
usual.
The Red Raiders' on-court
celebration after the final
seconds ticked off was rather

Munro ... continued from page IB
low-key, however, despite the
occasion. But the team walked
confidently off the court know
ing it has more games to play.
Of course, the win meant a lot
to the guys calling the shots.
Crouse and his coaching staff
have stuck together for 10 years
despite some seasons that ended
with over 20 losses. That’s a rar
ity in sports these days, even at
the high school level.
If ever a group of coaches
deserve a trip to state, it’s these
guys.
“I’ve had a coaching staff
that’s stuck with me for 10
years when they probably could
have gone some other places,”
Crouse said. “I’ve got former
players now working in our pro
gram trying to make us better.”
The coach is also appreciative
of Madison County school lead
ers that have believed in him all
this time.
“There’s been a lot of people
in the administration, the athlet
ic directors... We’ve had some
years where we didn’t win very
many games, but they stuck
with me, and I appreciate that.”
That said, there’s plenty left to
be told about the Red Raiders’
turnaround season.
Madison County has a huge
game against Winder-Barrow in
the region semifinals Friday at
5:30 p.m. The Red Raiders are
one win away from playing for
the region title.
If there’s ever a time that the
community can come together
and be a part of what’s truly a
feel good story, it’s now.
"We’ve always had great fan
support,” Crouse said.
"So we’re excited to finally
give them something to really
cheer about.”
We are too guys.
Congratulations.
