‘Doc’ McCreery
Dr. Robert Atkeson “Doc”
McCreery, 92, died Monday,
February 22, 2010, following a
short illness.
Born on May 30, 1917, in
Columbia, Mo., he was the son
of the late James Wesley and
Gladys Atkeson McCreery.
In the course of his studies
and work, he and his family
moved to Virginia, Washington
and Costa Rica. A resident of
Jackson County since 1957, he
was Professor of Agronomy at
the University of Georgia for
more than 20 years. He was
active in Jefferson Rotary and
volunteered in many county
activities, including literacy
programs and rebuilding the
grist mill at Hurricane Shoals
Park. Mr. McCreery was pre
ceded in death by his wife
of 69 years, Isabel Adams
McCreery; a son, Robert
Michael McCreery; and daugh-
ters-in-law, Candace Reynolds
McCreery, Felice Armstrong
McCreery and Sharon Niles
McCreery.
Survivors include chil
dren and spouses, Betty and
Bill Turner, Bill and Sharon
McCreery, Eleanor and Clyde
Brannen and James McCreery,
all of Jefferson, Paul McCreery,
Austell, and Susan and Charles
LaCount, Watkinsville; a sister,

Sunny McDonald
CLARKESVILLE
Sunny Nivens McDonald died
Saturday, February 27, 2010.
Born in Gainesville, she
was a longtime resident of
Commerce and the daughter
of the late Noama Nivens Pugh
and Paul Nivens. She graduated
from Gainesville High School,
where she was a Red Elephant
Cheerleader and Majorette. She
received a BA in Elementary
Education
from Brenau
College.
While at
Brenau, she
was on the
May Court
and was a
member
of Alpha
Gamma
Delta.
Sunny was also a member of
Delta Kappa Gamma, an edu
cational sorority.
A much-loved elementary
school teacher. Sunny taught
for two years in the Buford
City School System and for
28 years in the Commerce
City School System. She was
a scout leader and worked with
the Commerce Downtown
Development Authority. Sunny
was the “hostess with the most-
ess” - entertaining for years
in her home - brides-to-be,
mothers-to-be, governors, rep
resentatives and senators (both
state and local). Industrial
prospects for Jackson County
were always welcomed and
entertained in her home.
She was a member of the
First Presbyterian Church of
Clarkesville and The Orchard
Golf and Country Club. But
she was especially, a loving
wife, mother and grandmother.
“I love you, Mom” was always
Lauren’s parting message to
Sunny.
Survivors include her hus
band of 45 years, Lauren
“Bubba” McDonald; a son
and daughter-in-law, Lauren
Wylie McDonald III and Claire
McDonald; grandsons, Wylie
and Ridley; granddaughter,
Hailey; stepfather, William
Pugh; sisters, Paula Nivens (
Buzzie) Hardy, Commerce,
and Candy Nivens (Herschel)

Ronald Paul Nivens, Atlanta;

Funeral services will be
held at 5 p.m. on Thursday,
March 4, at the Cumming First
United Methodist Church. The
Gainesville Girls will serve as
pallbearers. Private interment
will be at a later date. The
family will receive friends on
Thursday, March 4, from 1 to
4:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Annie Bell McDougald

Annie Bell Phillips McDougald,
87, died Friday, February 26,
2010, at her residence follow
ing a sudden illness.
Born on September 28,
1922, in Forsyth County, she
was the daughter of the late
Early C. and Genia Mangum
Phillips. She was a loving
wife, mother, grandmother and
great-grandmother. She lived
most of her life in Hall County,
and was retired from Mooney
Manufacturing Company, a fur
niture company that was located
in Flowery Branch, where she
worked for a number of years.
She was a faithful, dedicated,
longtime member of Mulberry
Baptist Church in Hoschton,
who loved and lived for the
Lord daily. Mrs. McDougald
was preceded in death by her
husband, the Rev. John O.
McDougald; sisters, Virginia
Cruse, Eva Millwood, Inez
Millwood and Jewel Bryan; and
brothers, Clyde (Hut) Phillips,
JT Phillips, Radford Phillips
and the Rev. Hoyt Phillips.
Survivors include a daugh
ter and son-in-law, Helen and
Doug Wright, Oakwood; son
and daughter-in-law, Jacky and
Evelyn McDougald, Oakwood;
grandson and his wife, Tim

Virginia Palmer Miller,
“Peasey”, died Tuesday, March
2, 2010.
A lifelong resident of
Nicholson, she had spent
the past 19 years at the BJC
Nursing facility, where she
became a blessing to many of
the workers and other residents.
She was the daughter of the
late Frank and Clara Palmer of
Nicholson and dearly loved her
stepmother Almera. She spent
her working life in textile man
ufacturing but enjoyed cooking
for her family and friends. She
always loved spending time
with the people she loved and
a stranger was just a friend she
hadn’t met yet. Mrs. Miller was
preceded in death by her hus
band of 50 years, J.B. Miller;
and a brother, James R. “Spud”
Palmer.

Richard Dale “Squirrel”
Nails, 57, died Tuesday,

A native of Washington,
D.C., he was the son of the
late Raymond Dale and Media
Layton Nails. He was an auto
mobile mechanic and a vet

where he received the National

Lee Nix. She was a retired
cosmetologist and a member

she enjoyed an early career
in the field of advertising in
Atlanta. After years as a dedi
cated parent and homemaker,
she returned to school, earned
a master’s degree in education,
and with two colleagues, pio
neered in team teaching for the
Carle Place School District on
Long Island.
Survivors include children,

N.C., and Emily Rice Reynolds
and husband Stephen F.

Born in Habersham County
on May 3, 1940, she was the
daughter of the late Travis and
Esther Coley Dodd. She was a
homemaker and also a devot
ed and loving wife, mother,
grandmother and great-grand
mother. She attended Antioch
Pentecostal Fire Baptized
Holiness Church and stayed
strong in her faith by reading
her Bible and praying. Mrs.
Stewart was preceded in death
by brothers, Wilkie Dodd,
Henry Dodd and David Dodd.
Survivors include her hus
band of 52 years, Mark H.
Stewart, Alto; daughters and
sons-in-law, Betty Ann and

Beek Sr., 76, died peacefully
Saturday, February 27, 2010, at
the residence of his daughter,
Brenda Thomas in Maysville,
where he resided during his
extended battle with cancer.
Born on September 29, 1933,
in Muskegon, Mich., he was

Beek. He was a
longtime resident of Buford, a
Navy veteran and retired from
Foote and Davies Printing
Company.
Survivors include daughters,
Brenda Thomas, Maysville,
and Carla Rolader-Bradbury,
Lawrenceville; sons, Greg
Ter Beek, Lafayette, and Don
Ter Beek Jr., Maysville; three
sisters, Lois, Beverly and
Margaret and one brother. Jack,
Muskegon, Mich.; uncle. Bud
Vanderloin; several grandchil
dren, great-grandchildren and
loving friends.

Hospice for the tender and
respectful care given to Don
and his children during the last

at St. Mary’s Hospice House.
A native of Oglethorpe
County, she was the daughter
of the late Edgar “Lee” B. and
Georgia Mae Moon Paul. Mrs.
Tucker was preceded in death
by her first husband, Ernest
Tolbert; second husband, Roy
Tucker; son, Gary Tolbert; and
son-in-law, Ed Scarbrough. She
was a homemaker and member
of Collier Baptist Church in
Comer.
Survivors include a son and
daughter-in-law, Roy and Sue
Tolbert, Jefferson; daughter,
Myra Scarbrough, Comer;
daughter-in-law, Bonnie
Tolbert; stepdaughter, Pat and
Bobby Bond; eight grandchil
dren; 13 great-grandchildren;
two great-great-grandchildren;
and step-grand and great
grandchildren.

Thomas “J.T.” Wilkes, 81,
retired Jackson County probate
judge and longtime community
leader, died Monday, March 1,
2010, in Athens, following a
brief illness.
Mr. Wilkes retired in 1992
as probate judge after having
served 20 years. He was a for
mer businessman, having owned
and operated Wilkes Texaco in
Jefferson for many years. He

Mr. Wilkes was founder of
the original Jefferson Retired
Old Men Eating Out (ROMEO)
Club and was captain, man
ager and starting pitcher of the
Brockton Old Timers. He also
was a founder of the Jefferson
Little League baseball program.
Mr. Wilkes was a graduate of
Martin Institute, Jefferson.
He was born in Jefferson, son
of the late Worth and Mattie
Jackson Wilkes. He also was
preceded in death by three sis
ters, Laconia Wilkes, Thelma
Nabors and Frances Glenn.
Survivors include his wife
of 59 years, Jacque Hutchins
Wilkes; two sons and daugh-
ters-in-law, Tim and Mona
Wilkes, Crawford, and Andy
and Chrisann Wilkes, Norcross;
one daughter and son-in-law,
Juli and Alex Wisotsky, Athens;
two sisters, Carolyn Evans
