Miss MCHS
Pageant
applications
now available
The Madison County High
School FBLA is accepting con
testant applications for the Miss
MCHS Pageant, which will be
held April 17 at 7 p.m. in the
high school gym. Admission
will be $5.
Young ladies interested in
participating in this year’s pag
eant should see Sonia Code or
Christy Drew for an application
packet. All applications must be
turned in no later than March
17, 2010.

who are interested in sponsoring
a young lady for the pageant

be subject to a $10 fee to be used
towards the cost of the pageant.

Kindergarten
registration set for
March 17,18
Kindergarten registration for
Madison County schools will be
held on Wednesday, March 17
from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on
Thurs., March 18, from 8 a.m.
until 4 p.m.
All children in Madison
County who will be five years
old by Sept. 1, 2010, should be
registered at this time, school
officials said.
Parents should call the school
their child will attend to make
an appointment to register. On
the day of registration, parents/
guardians will need to bring
their child and the following
information with them:
•child’s Social Security
number
•child’s birth certificate
•child’s immunization record
•proof of residency (showing
911 address)
•custody agreement, if
applicable

Piedmont College
grant program
extended
A Piedmont College financial
aid program for students living in
select northeast Georgia counties
has been expanded to cover seven
more Georgia counties.
The college’s Neighborhood
Grant Program provides 50-per-
cent tuition grants to students who
are at least 25 years old and work
ing toward their first undergradu
ate degree.
The grant previously was avail
able only to students living in
Habersham, Towns, Rabun,
White, Stephens, Hall, Banks,
Franklin and Jackson counties.
The program is being expanded
to include students in Union,
Lumpkin, Hart, Madison, Elbert,
Dawson, and Forsyth counties.
The program is currently help
ing more than 200 students attend
college at Piedmont, said Kim
Lovell, director of financial aid.
Students may also qualify for
other state and federal aid, such as
the Pell Grant or Georgia HOPE
scholarship, to further reduce
their tuition costs, Lovell said.
Kavanaugh named to high honors list St. Andrew’s-Sewanee
Taylor Kavanaugh, daughter of Darrell and Robin
Kavanaugh of Danielsville, has been named to the High
Honors List at St. Andrew's-Sewanee School for the most
recent grading period. Kavanaugh, a senior boarding stu
dent, is a Proctor, a Blue & Gold Guide (student ambassa
dor), and a member of the Honors Council.
She is a Claiborne Scholar, a merit scholarship program
that provides tuition assistance for students who excel in the
classroom and are leaders in their community. Thanks to a
special relationship between St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School
and The University of the South (Sewanee), Kavanaugh
will graduate from high school with several college courses
completed.
She intends to pursue a career in biotechnology and
medicine and has already been admitted to several top-flight
universities.

HEATON TALKS WITH PARENTS
Colbert Elementary School recently held its
second Parent Academy. Parents were invited
to a presentation about the upcoming CRCT.
Principal Billy Heaton (pictured) talked to the
parents about the purpose of the state test and
explained the particular emphasis at 3 rd and 5 th
grades. Parents were then introduced to the
online test practice site used at Colbert that is
available for families to use at home. “OAS is
an excellent way for you to help your children
get ready for taking the CRCT,” explained Mr.
Heaton. “It will give your children a chance
to practice and get a feel for the types of ques
tions they will see on the test. “
