Carolyn Barnett
NICHOLSON - Carolyn
Jane Barnett, 72, died
Monday, January 9, 2012 at
her residence.
Born in Jackson County,
she was the daughter of
the late Oliver and Babe
Howington Sailers. She was
a member of the Antioch
United Methodist Church
and was a homemaker.
Mrs. Barnett was preceded
in death by her husband,
Tommy Barnett.
Survivors include daugh
ters, Sherri Allen and Susan
Kenimer, both of Nicholson;
sons, Tommy Charles
Barnett, Terry Barnett and
Michael Barnett, all of
Nicholson; a sister, Joyce
Tolbert, Commerce; twelve
grandchildren; and twelve
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were
held Thursday, January 12
at the chapel of Little-Ward
Funeral Home with the
Rev. Dennis Kesler officiat
ing. Interment was in the
Antioch United Methodist
Church Cemetery.

Ramsey Burks
HOSCHTON - Ramsey
McDonald Burks, 78, died
Tuesday January 4, 2012.
Born in Dyersburg, Tenn.,
he was the youngest of
seven children, the son of
the late Harry Black and
Novella Ramsey Burks. He
grew up in Columbia, Tenn.,
played drums and graduated
from Central High School.
He held
degrees
from
Vanderbilt
University
(BA 56),
and the
Stonier
Graduate
School of
Banking at Rutgers where
he finished first in his class.
After two years of service
in the United States Army
in Germany, he brought his
young family to Atlanta.
He joined Trust Company
Bank of Georgia in 1958
and held various positions of
management there until his
retirement from SunTrust in
December 1993. He mar
ried his beloved wife Karen
in 1982. His personal inter
ests included finance and
investing and he put these
to use in retirement by vol
unteering at the WSB Radio
Consumer Action Center.
He also enjoyed tennis and
volunteered at the 1996
Atlanta Olympic Games
Tennis venue. He had his
pilot’s license and was a fan
of WWII aviation. He was a
responsible and caring man
who loved his family and
while his lifelong presence
will be missed, the founda
tions he built will continue
to endure.

vivors include three sons,

Alpharetta, Stephen
(Cristina) Burks, Huntsville,
Ala., and Harry (Shannon)

Wagner, Duluth; five grand
children, Andrew (Lynne)
Burks, Palo Alto, Calif.,
Harrison Burks, Alpharetta,
Conner Burks, Alpharetta,
Lauren Burks, New York,
N.Y., Erin Burks, Los Altos,
Calif.; three step-grandchil
dren, Hayley Alexander and
Lauren Alexander, Duluth,
and Evan Wagner, Suwanee;
two brothers, Bill Burks,
Rochester, N.Y. and Paul
(Marcie) Burks, Santa Rosa,
Calif.
Mr. Burks was preceded
in death by brothers, Harry
Burks, Jr. and Edward
Burks; and sisters, Rosalie
Burks Wright and June
Burks Jackson Geny.
No services will be held
immediately. A private cel
ebration of his life will be
held near Columbia, Tenn.
in the spring.

Ramsey M. Burks.

C. Jordan Cannon, 84, died

at Hartwell Health Care
Center.
Born on March 7, 1927 in
Royston, she was the daugh
ter of the late Henry and
Thelma Edwards Jordan.
She was a retired seamstress
for Elberton Manufacturing
Company and was a mem
ber of the Liberty Hill
United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Cannon was preceded
in death by her husband,
Calvin C. Cannon Sr.; a
son, Lamar Cannon; sis
ter, Lanora Dean; and two
brothers, Madison Jordan
and Kennister Jordan.
Survivors include three
daughters, Joyce Foster,
Hartwell, Kathy Hill
and her husband Doug,
Danielsville, and Debbie
Trotter, Hartwell; two sons,
Calvin Cannon Jr. and his
wife Linda, Elberton, and
Morris Cannon and his wife
Hazel, Bowersville; two sis
ters, Condyce Phillips and
her husband Jack, Marietta,
and Martha Ginn, Hartwell;
eleven grandchildren; and
fourteen great-grandchil
dren.
Funeral services were
held Monday, January 9, in
the chapel of the Strickland
Funeral Home of Hartwell
with the Rev. Kathleen
Deegan-Neal officiating.
Burial was in the Memorial
Garden of Prayer.

Foster Carroll, 90, died
Tuesday, January 3, 2012, at
her residence.
Born in Hart County on
August 18,1921, she was the
daughter of the late Fred and
Tommie Bennett Foster. She
was formerly co-owner and
operator of Howard Carroll
Furniture Company. She was
a member of the Bowersville
United Methodist Church,
where she was a mem
ber of the Quilting Group.
Mrs. Carroll was preceded
in death by her husband,
Howard Wayne Carroll.
Survivors include a
daughter and son-in-law,
Nancy and David Nichols,
Commerce; son and daugh-
ter-in-law, Wayne and Pam
Carroll, Hartwell; grandchil
dren and spouses, Ashley and
Santiago Tagtachian, Brent

St. Mary’s Hospice House.
Born in Jackson County,
she was the daughter of the
late Milton and Lucy Allie
Aaron Turk. She was a mem
ber of the Antioch United
Methodist Church and was
retired from Harmony Grove
Mill. Mrs. Collins was pre
ceded in death by her hus
band, Marcus Boyd Collins;
and daughter, Peggy Hix.
Survivors include a daugh
ter, Jackie Smith, Nicholson;
sister, Nancy Ginn, Jefferson;
three grandchildren; six
great-grandchildren; and
three great-great-grandchil
dren.

Calvin Crocker
LULA - Calvin S. Crocker,
92, died Tuesday, January
10, 2012 at his residence.
Born on May 11, 1919,
he was the son of the late
James Dayton and Ollie
Parker Crocker. Mr. Crocker
was a member of Mt. Sinai
Congregational Holiness
Church and was retired from
Mt. Vernon Mills. He was
a lifelong resident of Banks
County and a United States
Army veteran who fought on
the front lines in Germany
Crocker was —
an evangelist
who enjoyed reading his
Bible, fellowshipping with
others and gardening. Mr.
Crocker was also preceded
in death by a son, Stanley
Wayne Crocker; sisters,
Mary Tims, Lanora Groover,
Winnie Crocker; and broth
ers, Coy Lee Crocker and
Laster Crocker.
Survivors include wife,
Rachel Elizabeth Sartin
Crocker of the home; sons
and daughters-in-law,
Swayne and Willie Mae
Crocker, Cornelia, and

He was bom on February
14, 1938, in Commerce, the
son of Theodore Roosevelt
and Charlie Willie (Gunter)
Gary. He was a Master
Sergeant in the United
States Air Force retiring in
1983. Mr. Gary was pre
ceded in death by a brother,
Joe Gary.

Lee Harrison
GRANT, FLA. - Lee
Harrison, 73, died suddenly
Friday, December 30, 2011,
doing what he loved most,
fishing.
Lee was bom in Winder,
the son of the late Ernest
Lee and Willie Langford
Harrison. He graduated
from North Georgia College
with honors and was retired
after 44 years in the space
industry.
Survivors include his
wife, Pat Casey Harrison; a
son, Dennis Harrison; sister,
Nancy Hill, Milledgeville;
brother, Johnny Harrison,
Bogart; nephew, Kevin Hill,
Rainbow City, Ala.; two
nieces, Sara and Lauren
Harrison, Bogart; and his

Mendez, Jr., 68, died
Monday, January 9, 2012, at
Northeast Georgia Medical
Center, following an extend
ed illness.
He was born November
1, 1943, the son of the
late Feliciano and Timotea
Mendez, Sr. Mr. Mendez
was a Marine Sergeant
where he served three terms
in the Vietnam War. He was
the recipient of the Purple
Heart, two Bronze Stars, and
numerous other ribbons and
citations. Mr. Mendez was
a member of First Baptist
Church in Gainesville, VFW
and DAV.
Survivors include his wife,
Marilyn Drake Mendez; a
son, Vincet Mendez, Sugar
Hill; sonanddaughter-in-law,
Andy and Kathy Mendez,
Poplar Bluff, Mo.; daughter,

McCarty Fowler. She lived
her adult life in Athens, and
was a longtime member of
Central Baptist Church.

of her immediate family.
Mrs. Nation was preceded
