Golfers to hit course April 9
Madison County riflers edge Parkview
Madison County golfers are
scheduled to hit the links again April
9, the day after this week’s Masters
final round.
Madison County boys’ and girls’
squads will host Prince Avenue at
Double Oaks Golf Course, then host
East Jackson at the same course
April 11, before traveling to Scales
Country Club in Homer to take on
Banks County April 12.
Here’s a recap of recent MCHS
golf action:
VS. OCONEE
The girls defeated Oconee 96
to 101. Scorers included: Katie
Jane Phillips, 46; Megan Boswell,
50; Anna Tolbert, 58; and Nicole
Jordan, 60.
The boys lost to Oconee 167
to 216. Scorers included: Taylor
Crouse, 46; Tyler Drake, 51; Chris
Phillips, 56; Caleb Seymour, 63; CJ
Rodrigues, 64; and Tryston Smith,
64.
THE GEORGIA PEACH
The girls participated at the
Georgia Peach at Hard Labor Creek
March 24.
Phillips shot a 95 and competed
in the championship flight. Boswell
and Tolbert both shot 96 and tied for
third place in the A Flight.
AT THE ORCHARD
The girls were defeated by Banks
County and Habersham Central
recently at The Orchard.
Phillips fired a 42. Other Madison
County scorers were Boswell, 50;
Tolbert, 59; and Jordan, 56.
The boys were defeated by
Habersham Central but defeated
Banks County. Habersham Central
finished with a 168, while Madison
County shot a 227 and Banks
County finished with a 237.
Crouse led Madison County with
a 42. Other scores were: Drake,
60; Phillips, 69; Seymour, 61;
Rodrigues, 65; and Smith, 64.
As the Madison County rifle
team inches toward state, the com
petition is proving to be more dif
ficult evety week.
This past week’s match against
Parkview High School proved
to be a “nailbitei” all the way
up to the end. After shooting the
prone position the Raiders were
only ahead by a single point. They
gained a bigger lead in standing,
rising 11 points over their foe and
closing out the match in kneeling
with a lead of only 16 points.
This was by far the closest match
the Raiders have competed in this
season, but they overcame the trial,
firing a score off 1,133 against
Parkview’s 1,117.
Leading the team with an excel
lent showing was Captain J.S.
Fielding, who shot five points from
perfect. loosing only one point in
the prone position, and four in

the standing. Fielding fired a per
fect score of 100 in the kneeling
position giving him a total score
of 295. Also, with an outstand
ing performance was Julie Wood,
who shot a 288. Following closely
behind her was Parker Mize with a
284. Mize shot a perfect score of
100 in the prone position. Tiffany
Brown also competed with a score
of 266.
With their sights set on a state
championship, the Raiders will
have to change their training pro
cedures to adapt to the unique
range at Fort Benning.
When the Pool
International Shooting Complex
was constructed, it was designed
to be a “standing only’’ range. With
this comes the challenge of shoot
ing a three-positioned event on a
range that was not designed for
it. On the firing line (place where
shooters fire from) there is a three-
foot tall wall that was intended to
be used as a place for shooters to
rest their rifles when taking a break
from shooting. To adapt to this
challenge shooters will be required
to fire on top of fold-out tables to
get above this wall.
But, not all changes are going
to be disadvantageous. Instead of
using conventional paper targets
that have to be scored by hand,
shooters will have the luxury
of shooting electronic targets. An
electronic target is a single bull’s
eye that has microphones that
record the sound of the passing
projectile. The microphones then
decipher the location of the shot
based on how long it takes for the
sound to reach the different micro
phones. This system is so accurate
that it can pinpoint the shot to
within a tenth of a point.
After the shot is fired the tar
get then sends a signal back to
a moniter for the shooter to see
the exact location of his/her shot.
This information is also sent to a
spectator screen so that the audi
ence can see as well. The Georgia
High School Association State
Championship Match will be held
on April 14. Media and public are
allowed to watch the event.
Red Raiders set new
personal track records
A number of Madison County track team members turned in personal
bests at meet in Hartwell last week versus Hart County, Elbert County
and Greene County.
TJ Allen set a new personal record on the pole vault, clearing 11’6”.
He took second place in the meet. Also freshman Cordre Hunter took
third place in the pole vault. "Allen has not had a finish below second
place all season which is commendable,” said track coach Jamie Sims.
Tyler Colquitt set a new personal record in the discus throw with a
hurl of 116’ and taking first place.
“This was a big step for Colquitt and I look forward to seeing him
continually increase as with everyone else as well!” said Sims.
Diamond Jennings had a new personal record in the girls’ shotput
with a throw of 29'9,” taking third place. Senior Sam LaZear had her
best time in the 100M dash with a 12.71 and also took first place overall
for the girls on Thursday. The boys 4x400 A team — Garrison Harris,
Marquez Henson, James Willis and Rashawn Gresham — took third
place.
“Being young this year and seeing our kids start to show some real
maturity has been a big reward thus far as the season has progressed,"
said Sims. “We have big expectations for this group of kids in the future
and I know they will get there if they keep busting their butts at practice
and keep the right attitude on and off the track! Attitude determines
your altitude is something we make sure we teach our kids in regards to
sports, athletics and even more so, life.”
The teams will hit the track again April 10 at Elbert County and then
Jefferson Relays April 14.

Creation of ‘Raceweek Illustrated’ announced
Raceweek Illustrated announces
a partnership that will help bring
the latest racing news and results to
race fans.
Raceweek Illustrated and Every
Other Man Productions are partner
ing with Dave Wiley and Georgia
Broadcasting to bring elements of
the fast growing motorsports web
site to television sets throughout
North Georgia.
"Raceweek Illustrated Garage
Talk” will soon premier on
Windstream cable’s north Georgia
community channel. Hosted by
Raceweek Illustrated editor and
publisher Brandon Reed, the pro
gram will report the latest racing
news from around the region and
around the country, along with driv
er and racing insider interviews, and
previews of upcoming racing events,
all in a 30-minute package.
‘We are very happy to be join
ing forces with Dave Wiley and
Georgia Broadcasting,” Reed said.
“Dave shares our vision for present
ing the ‘hometown heroes’ of racing
with the same importance as the
biggest name drivers. He’s worked
hard over the last few years to cover
local racing, and we feel we can put
together a great program that race
fans will enjoy.”
For Reed, it’s the next move in
a career that’s seen him work in
broadcast radio and newspapers as a
motorsports reporter. In the last year
moved away from both forms of
media to launch Raceweek Illustrated
as the fan’s “online connection to the
world of motorsports.”
Joining Reed as co-host on many
of these programs will be Doug
Turnbull, best known for his work as
traffic and NASCAR producer and
reporter for WSB Radio in Atlanta,
as well as one of the voices of
Gresham Motorsports Park’s play-
by-play team.
“Doug is a consummate profes
sional in broadcasting, and was our
first choice to be a part of the pro
gram,” Reed said. “He’s also been
a great friend to us at Raceweek
Dlustrated. Having him as a part of
Garage Talk will help to make it a
strong show right out of the gate.”
The shows will reach a potential
40,000 homes in North Georgia. In
addition, each program will be avail
able for viewing via the Internet.
Specific air dates and times will be
announced later.
