Raider softball team wraps up summer play

Coach Ken Morgan’s
softball Raiders had one
final swing at summer
league play last week at
the Fellowship of Christian
Athletes’ camp in Columbus
Georgia. Madison County
played six games in three
days and finished with a
record of 2-2-2.
The Raiders faced Crisp
County on Monday, win
ning 14-1. The Raiders
scored 10 runs in the
fourth inning and were led
by Mallory Smith’s two
hits and two RBIs. Senior
Courtney Weldon finished
with a 2-of-3 performance
at the plate with a run batted
in. Kelsey Wood and Naomi
Cowart shared the pitching
duties with Wood work
ing three innings, allowing
five hits and one run, while
striking out three. Cowart
worked an inning without
allowing a run or hit.
Madison County lost to
Northside 6-2 on the same
day. Laney Bales and Lauren
Griffeth had one hit each
in the contest. The Raiders
then faced Jackson County
on Tuesday and battled to
a 2-2 tie with the Panthers.
Haleigh Turner, Bales and
Ashtyn Bray all collected a
hit for the Raiders. Karissa
Embry worked four innings
in the circle allowing three
hits and two runs while
recording three strikeouts.
Madison County defeated
Lamar County Tuesday
behind Turner’s four RBIs.
The Raiders won the con
test 6-3 despite finishing
with just three hits in the
game.
The Raiders then con
cluded play in Columbus
losing to Carrollton 7-5 and
tying Morgan County 7-7.
In the loss to Carrollton, the
Raiders were led by Laney
Bales’ two hits and two
RBIs. Mallory Smith went
3-for-3 at the dish in the tie
with Morgan County. Smith
also collected two RBIs.
Kirsten Casper finished the
game going 2-for-3 at the
dish. The Raiders finish
2016 summer league play
with a 5-6-2 record.

Dept, holds summer camps
Madison
The Madison County
Recreation Department
recently completed four ses
sions of summer day camp.
Recreation leaders said the
camps under the direction of
Dee Reynolds, were a “huge
success with numerous
Madison County children
taking part.’’
During these camps, the
children participated in arts
and crafts, games, and spe
cial events.
“M.C.R.D. would like to
thank the Madison County
Library for allowing us to
participate in their summer
reading program again this
year,” said organizers.
This year’s counselors
were Travis Moak, Mary
Alice Chastain, Lee Reno,
Karli Booth, Leah Gearing,
Steven Tiller, Mary Michael
Chasteen, Emily Bartlett and
Cody Coile.
“These young men and
women devoted a lot of time
and hard work during the hot
summer days of day camp,
and we would like to extend
a ‘thank you’ to each of
them.” said organizers.
This year’s camp partic

registration offered online
Online registration for the Madison County Recreation
Department’s fall athletic programs, coed soccer and girls’
volleyball is open.
Go to www.madcorec.com and click on the “Register
Now” caption to register for soccer and girls’ volleyball.
The Madison County Recreation Department has opened
registration for their fall athletic leagues and registration
will end Sunday, Aug. 7 at 11:59 p.m. All registration is
now completed online. You may complete registration
using any computer, i.e. personal computer, library, recre
ation department, etc.
“Please make sure you sign up by 11:59 pm on Aug. 7,”
said library staff members. “There will be no late sign
ups.”
Co-ed soccer leagues will be offered in the following
divisions: 6 and under, 8 and under, 10 and under, 13 and
under and 17 and under.
Volleyball Leagues will be offered in the following divi
sions: junior girls, ages 9-11; and senior girls, ages 12-14.
The age control date is Sept. 1, 2016. (Soccer players
must be five by that date and cannot turn 18 by that date.
Volleyball players must be nine by that date and cannot
mm 15 by that date.). The registration fee is $35 per child.
A birth certificate is required for registration. The out-of-
county fee is an additional $25 per child. For more infor
