Two face drug charges after fire reported on Loggerhead Lane
Two people were arrested on
drug charges last week after
sheriff's deputies responded to
the report of a large fire in a
yard on Loggerhead Lane.
Lara Alina Carey, 35, and
Timothy Earl Fowler, 50, both
of Danielsville, were each
charged with one count of pos
session of methamphetamine
and possession and use of
drug-related objects.
On July 18, deputy Gabe
Dalton and Sgt. Daniel Martin
went to the area after someone
called to report the fire and
also stated they believed there
were “narcotic related things
stemming from the residence”
as well.
Dalton arrived in the area and
spotted a gray 2006 Chevrolet
Colorado coming from where
the lire was reported.
Dalton noted that he was
familiar with both the driver
(Carey) and her passenger
(Fowler) and had some infor
mation about them consuming
illegal narcotics.
Carey told Dalton that she
and others had already put the
fire out.
Dalton noted that she
appealed to be under the influ
ence of something and she
admitted she was on probation
for possession of methamphet
amine.
Carey was asked if there was
any type of illegal narcotics
located in the vehicle and she
denied that there was any and
gave permission for the track
to be searched.
Both she and Fowler were
asked to get out of the track
and as Fowler did so, Dalton
saw him put an open container
in the floorboard.
Dalton frisked Fowler for
weapons and found a glass
pipe covered in cloth in his
front pants pocket, along with
a bag of suspected metham
phetamine.
Methamphetamine was also
found in Carey’s purse and
another pipe was found in the
backseat.
Both Carey and Fowler were
anested at the scene and taken
to jail.
In another arrest, Thomas
Neal Evans, 44, was charged
with criminal trespass, posses
sion and use of drag related
objects, giving false name,
address or birthdate to law
enforcement officer and three
counts of obstruction.
Deputy Gabe Dalton and
Sgt. Daniel Martin went to a
home on Garnett Ward Road
about 1 a.m. regarding infor
mation about illegal narcotics
at the residence.
They found two people in a
van and several other people
standing in the doorway of the
home. They also heard a loud
bang coming from the back of
the house, as if someone had
gone through a window and
fell on metal.
They could hear several peo
ple yelling but could not tell
what was being said.
Dalton began to give chase,
giving multiple commands for
the subject to stop running after
spotting a man fleeing on foot.
He caught up with him about
20 yards into the wood line and
asked him for his name, but he
refused, except to say his name
was ‘Tom.”
While at the patrol car,
Sergeant Martin asked ‘Tom”
what his name was and he
provided them with a false
name. After running this name
through dispatch it was dis
covered that that person had
an active probation wanant out
of Clarke County. They later
discovered that his real name
was Thomas Neal Evans.
Three other men with
active warrants out of Banow,
Jackson and Banks counties
were anested at the scene and
turned over to their respective
law enforcement agencies.
In a third arrest, Jennifer
Leigh Montgomery, 28, of
Carlton, was charged with bat
tery FVA.
Deputy Chris Haston was
dispatched to Paoli Road
regarding a domestic issue
after two callers traveling down
Paoli Road reported the inci
dent.
When Haston arrived
in the area he saw a female
(Montgomery) matching the
description of the female that
was in the domestic dispute
walking back towards a home
on Paoli Road. He noted she
was crying and upset.
He asked her what was going
on and she stated that her and
her husband had gotten into
a fight.
She said she was attempting
to leave a home on Paoli Road
and walk back to her residence
when she and her husband
began to argue and that is when
she threw a nail polish bottle at
him. She stated that he contin
ued to follow her, yelling at her.
She also said she threw a cell
phone at him because he was
about to get hit by a car.
Haston then asked her if she
threw a rock at himas a caller
had stated, and she confessed
that she had.
Her husband also said she
threw the nail polish bottle at
him and he said he attempted
to leave to calm things down.
He said she followed him
and threw her cell phone at
him, followed by a rock.
She admitted to also hitting
her husband with her fists after
Haston spotted marks on the
man’s arm. She was charged
under the Family Violence Act
and taken to jail.

Warrants issued for man who brandished
pistol during argument with girlfriend
Warrants have been issued for
a man after a domestic altercation
involving a firearm on Farm Road
last week.
Deputy Gabe Dalton was dis
patched to the home about 10
p.m. where he met with a woman
who said her live in boyfriend
had argued with her when he
found out she was going out with
friends.
She said he left on foot before
Dalton arrived headed toward
Hwy. 72. She said he told her
she was not going anywhere as
she was taking her children to the
next door neighbor’s home.
As she was backing out of their
driveway, her boyfriend came out
of their house and walked up to
her car on the passenger side and
she said she could clearly see a
pistol in his right hand. She said
he was saying “don’t make me do
it, tonight is the night.”
The vehicle at that point was
occupied by the woman and her
two children, who corroborated
her statement.
The 13-year old was “extreme
ly distraught” about the ordeal,
Dalton noted.
The woman said this is not the
first time her boyfriend has bran
dished a firearm at her during an
altercation. She then took Dalton
inside the home and showed him
where the pistol had been left
on top of a cabinet in the kitch
en. She also told Dalton that her
boyfriend is a convicted felon. A
pistol, magazines and three bul
lets were confiscated as evidence.
In another incident, an Athens
man was arrested last week after
someone called to report a “suspi
cious white male” in her yard on
Jack Sharp Road. Gabriel Dembe
Whitehill, 19, was charged with
loitering or prowling and criminal
trespass. The caller said she had
earlier received a call from her
sister, who lives on the same road,
saying that a strange man was
knocking on her door. The caller
also said she saw the man walk
on down the road towards her
daughter’s house and then saw
him walk from the woods behind
her and her son’s houses. She said
she confronted the man, who told
her he was looking for a woman
he knew who was supposed to be
on that road. Deputy Josh Smith
spoke with the man (Whitehill)
who also told him he was look
ing for a woman who he knows
from school and on Facebook.
He stated he was not familiar
with the area and went door to
door knocking in an attempt to
get pointed in the right direction.
While Smith detained
Whitehill, deputy Bradley Free
spoke with another woman who
lives on the road and she told
him that she watched Whitehill
attempt to open the door to her
home after she didn’t answer his
knock at her door. He was arrest
ed and issued criminal trespass
warnings for the residences he
had visited.
Other incidents on file at the
sheriff’s office last week includ
ed:
•A Colbert man was arrest
ed on a drag charge after dep
uty Gabriel Dalton found him
walking on the shoulder of Shoal
Creek Road during his routine
patrol. Jason Christopher Watson,
43, was charged with one count of
possession of methamphetamine.
According to the incident report,
Gabriel saw Watson walking
along the shoulder of the road and
noted he appeared to be fatigued
so he stopped his car beside him
and asked if he needed a ride
somewhere. Gabriel asked for his
identity and ran his information
through dispatch, which came
back with no warrants. Gabriel
then asked Watson if he could
frisk him and look inside his
purple backpack before allowing
him inside the patrol car. Watson
agreed to the search. While look
ing through the backpack, Watson
allegedly told him that he might
“find something" inside a purple
cloth box inside the backpack.
Inside the box was a hypoder
mic needle and two spoons that
housed the heads of Q-tips as
well as a white crystal residue.
Gabriel asked Watson how long
he had been using methamphet
amine and he allegedly said about
one year.
•Warrants have been issued for
a man who struck two women
and allegedly held one of them
inside a camper against her will,
all in front of the woman’s small
son. Deputy Bradley Osborne
was sent to the scene on B&L
Lane where he found a woman
standing on the side of the road.
The woman said her sister-in-law
had been beat up by the man, and
that he had also slapped her (the
witness) in the back of the head
when she tried to calm everyone
down.
Osborne went on to the resi
dence where he spoke with the
victim, who said the attacker went
into the woods on foot because he
knew law enforcement had been
called. Obsome went around to a
camper in the backyard where the
man was last seen but was unable
to locate him. The victim said the
man came home mad for some
unknown reason and slapped
her across the face. She took off
running through the house and
he pinned her down and began
hitting her in the face again, while
her small son watched and asked
him to stop. She said after he
let her get up she went to the
bedroom and he yelled for her to
come out to the camper to talk to
him. She went outside but refused
to go inside the camper, allegedly
telling him she did not want to
get beat up anymore. She said
he grabbed her by the arms and
drug her inside and began to hit
her again. She said she escaped
through a window and ran back
into the residence and locked the
door, but he somehow got back
inside and threw Gatorade all
over the walls.
She said she told her son to run
with her and she got to the front
door before he grabbed her by the
back of her shirt and pulled her
back through the door where he
hit her again and also bit her.
The witness said when she
arrived she started trying to calm
everybody down and he began
arguing with her. She said she
turned to walk away and he
slapped her on the back of the
head. During the interviews, the
perpetrator continued to call the
victim's cell phone. She even
tually answered and Osborne
spoke with him, telling him to
come out of the woods. The man
told Osborne he “caught a ride
with a stranger to Athens” but
would return in 30 minutes to
turn himself in. He did not return.
Deputies attempted to serve a
warrant on the man the next day
but he was not found. Deputy
Shawn Norris went to the front
door and knocked while another
deputy went to the back door.
Norris reported that he heard the
other officer shout “show me
your hands” and he then knocked

Dear Citizens of Madison County,
Over the last few months, everywhere I go, people ask
me who I am voting for as Sheriff of Madison County
I proudly served as the Sheriff of Madison County from
January 1997 thru December 2008.1 am no longer Sher
iff; however, I am a Georgia POST Certified Law En
forcement Officer since 1984 and a concerned county
resident. Many of my friends and family live and work
in Madison County; including my mother, my children,
and my grandchildren. I have never forgotten the oath I
took to serve and protect the citizens of this county. My
concern is genuine for the safety and wellbeing of each
citizen.
We have two remaining candidates seeking election as
our next sheriff, Kip Thomas and Michael Moore. I per
sonally know both men, they worked as deputies during
my tenure as Sheriff. Michael has always impressed me
with his willingness to go above and beyond for those
in need. Michael has proven to be a diplomatic and
even-handed man. I don't recall a single complaint or
infraction against Michael as a deputy.
It is both a privilege and an honor for me to endorse
Candidate Michael Moore for Sheriff.
Michael in my opinion is by far the most qualified
candidate we have for Sheriff. He knows and under
stands the importance of being available, approach
able, and accountable. Michael is a dedicated public
servant and an honest man. I wholeheartedly endorse
Candidate Michael Moore for Madison County Sheriff.
Respectfully,
