county's property and

One Beacon Insurance
Group Monday.
The premium will go
up from $185,000 to
$192,000 due to more
equipment and facilities
needing to be insured, not
due to any rate increases,
according to the county’s
insurance representative
Dan Home of Chastain
and Associates Insurance
Agency of Athens. Home
said that the county's pre
mium is set firm for one
year. So any equipment or
facilities that need to be
added to the plan aren’t
done so until the contract
is renewed. That’s what
accounted for this year’s
increase.
Horne noted that the
county has six more sher

to insure, along with addi

jail and the old gym next
to the county government
complex, which was pur

system.

ELECTION
New sheriff in town
Michael Moore defeats Thomas in runoff; Allen wins in District 1;
Scarborough earns Republican nod in BOC chairman’s race
By Zach Mitcham
zach@mainstreetnews.com
Michael Moore will step in as
Madison County’s new sheriff at
the end of the year. Lee Allen
will serve as the county’s new
District 1 commissioner. And John
Scarborough will face Democrat
Cedric Fortson in November for
the county commission chairman’s
seat.
Madison County voters gave
these three men the thumbs up in
Tuesday's runoff elections.
Moore defeated two-term sher
iff Kip Thomas in the Republican
primary runoff, garnering 2,281
votes (52.8 percent) to 2,041 (47.2
percent).
“I just want to thank every
one for their support and prayers
and standing right there beside
me the whole time,” said Moore
Wednesday morning.
The new sheriff said Jeff Vaughn
will serve as his chief deputy when
he takes office Jan. 1.
“He's worked with the Madison
County Sheriff’s Office for years
and he went from there and is now
the lieutenant for Royston PD,”
said Moore. “But he has served in
Madison County as a lieutenant.
He’s worked in the jail as a jail
captain. He was a school resource
officer. So, he’s going to bring a lot
to my department.”
Moore runs a trucking business.
He said that won't be his focus
anymore.
“We've pretty much already shut
the business down,” said the new
sheriff. “I’m going to find some
body I trust to pass it down to as far
as customers calling.”
Moore said he’s not planning any
big personnel changes when he
takes office.

“There’s nobody I plan on getting
rid of,” said Moore. “They have a
lot of new deputies I don't know.
And so it’s not fair for me to say, ‘I
don’t want them.' Because I don't
know how their work habits are.
So I’m going to give everybody a
chance to work with me and see
how they do with me and do with
the community.”
The new sheriff offered thanks to
everyone who voted in the runoffs.
“I really thank all the citizens
who voted for me and those who
voted for Kip,” said Moore. “I
think we had a good turnout for a
runoff. It means a lot.”
In the BOC chairman's race,
Scarborough defeated Stanley
Thomas 2,583 (61 percent) to
1.649 (39 percent). Thomas has
served as the county's District 1
commissioner for three terms, but
sought the chairman's seat this
year. Scarborough emerged as the
winner of the five-man race in the
Republican primary for the chair
man’s seat. He will face Fortson
in November, the lone Democrat
in the race.

the runoff. “A special thank you
to those who supported me per
sonally. I also want to express my
appreciation to Stanley Thomas for
his service as commissioner and
his willingness to lead the Board
of Commissioners as Chairman.
As the Republican nominee, I will
continue to make myself known as
well as my plan and vision for our
county. Most importantly, I want
to reassure everyone I am com
mitted and determined more than
ever to work with our commission
ers and department heads to move
Madison County forward. Thank

you all and God bless.”
Allen defeated Wayne Douglas
492 (57.75 percent) to 360 (42.25

2017.
“First I want to thank my beau
tiful wife and little girl for giv

make positive change in our world,
Madison County,” said Allen.
“Second, I want to thank my par

and support. And lastly, I must say
thank you to all of you who voted,
who shared post, put out signs, and
campaigned to get our message
out. I could not have done it with
out all the support and help of the
people in my district. I am so over
whelmed with joy and gratitude for
the honor. With the campaign over
I am ready to get to work. I look
forward to being your voice. I will
be holding public forums so that
you will be informed on the issues
and able to voice your opinion. We
will be available online through the
county website and social media.
Communication, accountability
and planning will be top priorities.
We will get Madison County back
on track and together we will move
Madison County forward. Thank
you for your trust and confidence.
I am focused on our future. God
Bless Madison County!”
