THE MADISON COUNTY (GA) JOURNAL. THURSDAY. AUGUST 4. 2016 — PAGE 9A
Library to exhibit ‘Ocean
Bound’ during August
"Ocean Bound: Upstream and Downstream." an artist
exhibit, will be on display at the Madison County Library in
August, with an opening and artist talk by Beth Thompson
set from 3 to 5 p.m.. Saturday. Aug. 6.
'The Broad River and its tributaries define the Madison
County landscape." a press release about the exhibit states.
"William Bartram wrote about the Broad River in his
Travels, published in 1792. Off Wildcat Bridge Road in
Madison County today stands a Bartram Trail marker. Thus
the exhibit dives deep into the riparian forests along the
Broad River, then 'Ocean Bound' catches the Broad flowing
to the Savannah River, and finally meanders through coastal
marshes around Savannah. Georgia."
"We all live downstream." remarked Cherokee Elder Tom
Belt addressing the Bartram Trail Society. To illustrate.
"Ocean Bound" includes Possible Perceptions from William
BartranTs “Piles of Mountains" to a dip in the sea otf Jekyll
Island.
"With my art. I intend to explore ocean bound waters,
both upstream and downstream, as Bartram described
years ago. and as I perceived them today.” said Thompson.
"William Bartram and his book Travels inspire me. I use
modem tools (computer, camera) and old-fashioned tools
(writing) to explore and compare the Southeastern landscape
to Bartram’s observations from 250 years ago. In so doing,
not only do I see how much ecological loss there is. I have
also discovered how much flora and fauna still remain in
the landscape."

Seagraves talks to Rotary about medical care
DEWEY SEAGRAVES
By Ellen Cowne
Rotary Club
Dewey Seagraves takes
care of people. He provides
oxygen to those having
trouble breathing. He pro
vides sleep therapy tech
nology for sleep disorders.
He makes available power
wheelchairs to people with
mobility problems.
Care Medical, with
Seagraves' help, provides
a myriad of other home
medical equipment and
accepts private insurance.
Medicare, and Medicaid.
This is not a new service
since Care Medical has
been caring for patients
since 1984 but. as Bob
Dylan said. “The World, it
is a 'changing” from what
it was when Dewey started
fourteen years ago. And it
needed changing.
Many patients prefer
Scooters to the Power
Chairs that Care Medical
provides because Scooters
and Hover Chairs appear
less like equipment for
handicapped individuals.
But Medicare deemed
them not practical after
they had spent $800 mil
lion on scooters that they
found to be used by peo
ple who didn’t need them
for medical reasons. They
found that salesmen were
suggesting to people that
they go to their doctor
and get a prescription for
a scooter to drive around
outside when they weren't
even using them at all in
the home which is what
they were meant for.
Now most insurance
companies will pay for a
power chair to be used in
the home but not a scooter
- and they are audited each
year to make certain the
new regulations are being
followed. A power chair is
operated with a joy sticks
and are easier to handle
both inside and out, while
a scooter should really be
used only inside.
Another new regulation
prohibits paying for a cush
ion to go in a chair even
though the special cush
ion is needed to keep users
from developing pressure
ulcers, which are both pain
ful and dangerous. Stage
one of a pressure ulcer is
just redness from sitting
in one place too long. In
stage two. the skin actu
ally begins to crack. Then
comes stage three when
the skin actually opens and
is followed by stage four
when the tissue opens as
well. The irony here is that
the cushion costs $200 and
is not covered, but the sur
gery to fix the problem that
could have been prevented
costs thousands of dollars,
and insurance does cover
this cost.
To help his patients with
costs not covered by insur
ance, Seagraves keeps
everything, he said. He
keeps old batteries to give
away, parts to fix broken
equipment, and he gives out
information about where to
acquire equipment cheaper
if patients are having to
cover the cost themselves.
Seagraves is an Assisted
Technology Professional,
or ATP. by profession, but
he is a relationship builder,
a resource, and a friend by
heart.
