Senior Center celebrates ‘Older
Americans Month’ in a big way
By Kelsey Tyner
Senior Center director
Can you believe it’s
already May?
This year seems to be fly
ing by but Madison County
Seniors are keeping up.
May is a very important
month at the Senior Center.
In 1963, President
Kennedy established
“Senior Citizens Month,”
which was later termed
“Older Americans Month”
by President Carter in
1980. This year the theme
for Older Americans Month
is “Aging Out Loud” to
raise awareness about
important issues facing
older adults and highlight
the ways older Americans
are advocating for them
selves, their peers, and their
communities. This year we
are hosting a cookout on
May 30 to honor all the
older Americans here at our
Center.
Also this month the Pilot
Club will host a Bingo game
on May 5. We will also
have a field trip to CiCi’s
Pizza Buffet in Athens and
do a little shopping. We will
recognize all our special
mothers and grandmothers
on May 11 during a spe
cial Mother's Day program
with the musical talents of
staff member Steve Moss.
Also, be sure to mark
this date on your calen
dars for our Senior Center
Bake Sale. Come buy all
the sweets so mom doesn’t
have to bake them for
Mother’s Day the following
Sunday. We will be selling
homemade baked goods
from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
so stop in and see us.
We will take time to
remember our fallen vet
erans and will be closed
Monday, May 29. in honor
of Memorial Day.
We would like to offer a
special thank you to Annie
Johns and everyone who
helped make our annual
greenhouse plant sale a
success. We made $1,500
this year at our sale. We
would also like to thank
all those who bought and
sold raffle tickets for our
Advisory Board fundraiser.
The $300 cash prize was
awarded to Donny Jones. A
$50 cash prize was award
ed to our top ticket sell
er. Alesha Blalock. Thank
you for your support of
the Center and our Board.
Profits will go towards
updating our fitness room
equipment.
The Senior Center will be
going on another overnight
trip. This September, our
group will travel to the new
Valley Harrah’s Casino and
Resort in Murphy, NC for
an evening of luck. Please
call us today to reserve
your spot on the luxurious
motor coach. You do not
have to be a member to
attend the trip. Anyone 50
and older is welcome. The
cost will be $179, and will
include all travel expens
es, a $20 casino credit and
your resort stay.
Good things are happen
ing here. Don’t be left out.
Call us anytime at 706-
795-6250, or come by
Monday through Friday,
7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
for more information.
Membership at the Center
requires no commitment or
obligation. A $3 cost share
donation is appreciated
when you attend and this
covers the cost of your hot
lunch, activities and access
to the fitness room. There is
a $5 field trip fee if you go
with us on our outings. You
must be an active mem
ber (attending the Center
at least once a week) to
be eligible to attend field
trips. You can also check
out our new website http://
madcosenior.wix.com/
mcseniorcenter to learn
more about our services
and how to get involved.
We look forward to hearing
from you.
