Warehouse
lawsuit
settled
A lawsuit over a controver
sial warehouse in Braselton
was settled before the town
council could take any action.
Cooper Farm LLC, Susan
Braselton Fant, Anne Elisa
beth Braselton and Stepha
nie Braselton Williams filed
a suit against the city and
developers in the Superior
Court of Jackson County in
April over the Town of Bra-
selton’s decision to annex and
rezone a proposed warehouse
off Hwy. 124 near Davis
Street.
The case was settled by
developers before the town
could answer the complaint,
or file a motion to dismiss,
according to town manager
Jennifer Scott.
The Braselton family and
Cooper Farm said the project
would decrease their prop
erty value, decrease buffers,
and add to noise nuisance,
light pollution and water run
off. The project, according to
the complaint, would cause
"irreparable harm.”
Approximately one month
after the complaint was
filed, the Braselton family
and Cooper Farm signed a
settlement with developer
CHI Development GP, LLC.
That settlement includes a
$300,000 payment for any
negative impact on the Bra-
selton/Cooper Larm property
and up to $90,000 in attor
ney's fees.
Other agreements include:
•a berm screening along
the Braselton property line.
Developers must also sub
mit screening and landscape
plans to the Braselton family/
Cooper Larm.
•no chain link fence along
the Braselton property or
Davis Street.
•a "no thru truck traffic"
sign on Davis Street.
•the 462,000 sq. ft. building
must blend in (constructed
with neutral tone materials).
•exterior lighting must
shine downwards.
Black bear
spotted in
Hoschton
A black bear was spotted in
West Jackson last week.
Officers with the Jackson
County Sheriff’s Office were
called for the sighting in
Hoschton. The complainant
said he saw a waist-high,
200-pound black bear stand
ing in the front yard of a
Murphy Road residence.
Officers told the man to
leave the bear alone if he saw
it again. They told him to call
9-1-1 if it became a nuisance.
Other sightings of black
bears have been recently
reported in Banks County.
5 arrested
in meth
lab bust
Live men are being held in
the Barrow County Detention
Center without bond for their
role in a local methamphet-
amine laboratory.
Catarino Lopez, Sergio
Lopez, Arturo Lopez-Tor-
res, Jhonnathan Ulivi Verga
ra and Julio Moreno-Nieto
were arrested June 21 after
the Barrow County Sheriff’s
Office Narcotics Unit and
Drug Enforcement Adminis
tration Clandestine Laborato
ry Team found 19 one-gallon
containers filled with liquid
amphetamine at 1625 Sedge-
field Trail in Bethlehem.
The methamphetamine,
transported from Mexico and
found in a bedroom closet,
yielded approximately 45
pounds of crystal metham
phetamine with a street value
of $1 million, according to a
news release.
Investigators also seized
three firearms, marijuana,
cocaine and over $250,000
in cash.

near Interstate 85 in Banks
County.
On Sunday, Lebruary 5,
2017, a skeleton was discov
ered in a wooded area near

Church, at 2170 Highway 59,
in Commerce. The body's
location was one mile south
of 1-85, Exit 154 for Toccoa/
SR 63/Martin Bridge Road.
The Banks County Sheriff's
Office requested the GBI's
assistance with the investi
gation.
A forensic anthropological
examination estimates the
remains to be of an African
American/Hispanic female,
approximately 30-44 years of
age, and approximately 4’9’
to 5’6’’ in height. The date
of death is estimated to be up
to 4 years prior to the time of
discovery.

terfly necklace charm. Blue,
purple, and gray in color fab
rics were also collected from
the scene.

Wheel
taken
from mill
at park
A part of the history of
Hurricane Shoals Park was
stolen between May 21 and
June 16.
A large grinding wheel
with a wooden platform
base from the lower side of
the mill at Hurricane Shoals
park was taken.
The wheel was on a plat
form in front of the mill
for display, Pat Bell, long
involved with park, said
Monday.
“It was so heavy we never
even thought about anybody
taking it,” Bell said. “It was
not in the mill. That’s a good
thing," she added.
Ricky McElroy, assis
tant director, park services,
reported the missing item. He
guessed it weighed between
150 and 200 pounds.
McElroy said workers
looked on the riverbank
below the grist mill, thinking
maybe the thieves couldn’t
move it far.
Pat Garrison, whose fami
ly has worked the mill since
the early 1990s, said, “It
has been a fixture on that
mill as long as I helped my
husband.”
She said her husband,
Bobby "Pee Wee" Garrison,
began grinding mill in the
early 1990s and her three
sons help now. She said the
mill grinds corn meal every
year during the Art in the
Park festival.
She said she did not know
who donated the wheel.
Garrison said visitors
sharpened all kinds of tools
on the wheel through the
years. Hoes, plows, axes
and knives were some of the
instruments that were sharp
ened.
Bell said work on build
ing the mill started in 1981.
It was not finished until
1982. It needed repairs and
rebuilding in 2001.
The mill was modeled
after one in Cades Cove, a
part of the Smoky Moun
tains National Park. Tuttle
Smith, Hoyle Martin and
Ron Prescott visited the mill
in Cades Cove and picked it
as a model.
Garrison said Martin
recruited her husband to
help. The families attended
church together.
Bell said “the retired bri
gade,” a group of retired
men," built the mill, “and I
was the water boy," she said.
She said it was built with
out public money because
the labor was all free and
volunteers raised donations
for the supplies
The outside wheel for the
mill was built “in the old
county farm," Bell said. “It
took them weeks and weeks
and weeks to build that."
The mill has had three vol
unteer millers, Otis Gooch,
Hoyle Martin and Bobby
Garrison, according to a
marketing publication from
the park.

“I will miss my friends
in Jackson County, but the
calling to work with stu
dents again was too strong!
I look forward to growing
as a principal and serving
the community,” Hitges
wrote.
Superintendent April
Howard said he will be
missed.
“While we’re very sad

he pursues the next chapter
in his personal and profes
sional journey,” she said.
Hitzges’ wife is also a
