Bruce Azevedo to seek
House District 33 seat
Strickland announces candidacy
for House District 33 seat
Bruce Azevedo of
Madison County has an
nounced that he will quali
fy to campaign for Georgia
House District 33, which
is currently held by Rep
Tom McCall, who has an
nounced that he will not
seek re-election in 2020.
Azevedo is a retired
Navy Supply Corp Chief
Warrant Officer and a vet
eran of both Vietnam and
Desert Storm. He is a res
ident of Madison County
since 1992 and is the bro
ker/owner of the RE/MAX
Top Performers real estate
franchise. He is also the
managing broker for his
family rental management
business, which his wife,
Pam, his military retired
children, and now a grand
son are employed.
He has been a leader in
local and statewide com-

ber of Commerce and also
a member of the Madison
County Industrial Devel
opment Building and Wa
ter Authority for the last 16
years, of which he served
as chairman for 11 years
until October 2019.

2018-2019, representing
73 Rotary Clubs in Geor
gia.
He is currently the
chairman of the Savannah
Upper Ogeechee (SUO),
Georgia State Water Coun
cil and a member since
2009, which includes all
counties in the House Dis
trict 33.
His has had many roles
in the Republican Par
ty and attended national,
state, district and coun
ty conventions for many
years, and also served as
an Electoral College elec
tor in 2016. He was the
9th Congressional District
Chairman two terms, and
Madison County GOP
Chairman for nine years.
He is currently the Geor
gia Republican Leader
ship Academy Chairman
responsible for statewide
training for the Georgia
Republican State Party.

to elude, suspended license
and failure to maintain lane.
•Stephen Adam Turner, of
Bowman, had his charges of
felony theft by taking and
misdemeanor theft by taking
and two counts of second
degree burglary dismissed
by Judge Watson because he
entered a guilty plea on those
charges in another case,
•Johnny William Sorrow,
of Colbert, had his charges
of two counts of unlawful
dumping dismissed by Judge
Watson because the defen
dant is deceased.
•Orlanda Arellano-Rodri-
guez, of Commerce, had a
charge of interference with
custody moved to the dead
docket by Judge Watson
until May 26. 2020. If the
defendant complies with
terms and conditions of the
bond and is not arrested for
any other criminal offenses,
the case will be dismissed at
that time, according to court
records.
•Spencer Levar Howard,
of Comer, was sentenced
by Judge Watson to serve
two years of probation on
charges of forgery in the
fourth degree and posses
sion of drug-related objects.
A charge of unlawful use of
license was dismissed.
•David Loton Langford,
of Hull, was sentenced by
Judge Watson to serve 12
months of probation and pay
$200 in fines on charges of
two counts of unlawful con
duct during a 911 call.
BOC seeks replacement for
late zoning board member

County commissioner Brian Kirk re
membered Bob Fowler, who recently
passed away, and who was a member of the
county zoning board.
Kirk said he wanted Fowler’s family to
know that he appreciates what Fowler did
for Madison County.
The District 4 commissioner added that
there is a vacancy at the planning commis
sion table and that he has spoken with a
few people, adding that anyone interested
in serving on the zoning board can contact
him. He said he hopes to have a recommen
dation for the commissioners at their next
meeting.
COUNTY GETS $10,000
FOR COURTHOUSE
In a separate matter, county commission
chairman John Scarborough announced
Monday that the county has received a
$10,000 Georgia Heritage Grant to go to
ward the restoration of the historic county
courthouse in the center of Danielsville.
The lower level of the courthouse is in use,
but the upper level has been abandoned for
over two decades.
ZONING REQUESTS APPROVED
County commissioners unanimously ap
proved a request by Paul Metz for a con
ditional use for an event venue on his 20.0
acre parcel, zoned A-1 at the comer of Rus
sell Road and Cooper Road. Metz told the
board that he would hold family-friendly
events at the property and that he’s not serv
ing alcohol at the venue. No one spoke in
opposition. The board also approved a re
quest by Chris Jones representing Calwood
Properties to rezone their 1.53-acre parcel
from B to R-l on Hwy. 72 East.
OTHER MATTERS
The board agreed to allocate an addi
tional $1,500 annually to an administrative
assistant position at the county extension
office. The position is partially funded by
the University of Georgia and school sys
tem, too. UGA is raising the pay by $3,000,
while the school board is also being asked
to contribute an additional $1,500 a year.
The position was held for over 30 years,
with the pay remaining stagnant.
The board approved $5,000 for training
in the commissioners’ office. Commis
sioner Derek Doster said he would like the
county to keep an active log of all training
scheduled in all offices so that the BOC
could see the bigger picture of what’s need
ed and when in terms of training.
An audience member asked to address
the commissioners about the Georgia Re
newable Power (GRP) plant. Commission
chairman John Scarborough said the pub
lic comment portion of Monday’s meeting
only applied to items on the agenda. There
were no GRP issues on the agenda. How
ever, the Jan. 27 BOC meeting will have a
public comment agenda item that will be
open for citizens to address the board on
any matter.
Clean Power Coalition to meet Jan. 16
The Madison County Clean Power Coa
lition (MCCPC) has scheduled meetings for
Thursday, Jan. 16 and Thursday, Feb. 20 at
7 p.m. at the Madison County Library, Dan
ielsville. Regular meetings will be held the
third Thursday of each month, with future
locations to be announced.
MCCPC is a group of citizens concerned
about the health risks associated with the
GRP Madison Biomass Plant and specifi
cally, the burning of creosote treated railroad
ties, organizers stated. Items on the Jan. 16
agenda include collecting petition signatures,
future actions and a short question-and-an-
swer session. The meetings are open to the
public.

Madison County has an
nounced his candidacy to
fill the Georgia House of
Representatives District 33
seat held by Tom McCall,
who is retiring.

Strickland noted that he
is a conservative, a family
farmer, a business owner
and a commissioner for
Madison County’s District
2.

Strickland was born and
raised in the district on the
farm in Madison County
that his family has owned
since 1804 - where he still
farms today.

grown to three locations
across Georgia,” states a
press release about Strick
land’s candidacy. “He is
also part owner of The
Hampton House Personal
Care Home in Colbert.”

the NEGA Boy Scouts of
America, on the board of
Broad River College and
Career Academy, Madi

He graduated from Mad
ison County High School

Georgia. Strickland is also

— an agenda-setting meeting is held on the first
Monday of the month at 6 p.m. in the government
complex on Albany Avenue in Danielsville. A
business meeting is then held on the final Monday
of the month at 6 p.m. at the same locale.
•Madison County Planning and Zoning
Commission — the first and third Tuesdays of
the month at 6:30 p.m. in the government com
plex.
•Madison County Board of Education —
the second Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. in the
library at the Board of Education Professional
Learning Center.
•Madison County Board of Tax Assessors
— meets the second Thursday of every month at
5:30 p.m. in the conference room of the Madison
County government complex in Danielsville. The
