living God. We can’t sanctify idolatry by
labeling a leader our Cyrus. We need no
Cyrus. We have a king. His name is Jesus.”
That last part is particularly true and
speaks to the heart of what is wrong.
Many Christians forgot their true leader and
turned to a human being to worship.
I admire the courage of both of these
women and I know that they will pay, are
paying, a price for their statements. That's
why it takes courage, because it requires a
painful cost. You just have to decide it costs
much more to stay silent.
I wonder how many have been turned
away from the teachings of Christ because
of what they have heard come out of the
mouths of many Christians over the last
few years.
And yes, it is a personal decision to
believe or not to believe — but the onus is
not just on the individual — there are many
scriptures that lay out the responsibility of
Christians to show Christ’s love by exam
ple.
What happened to the Great Commission?
What happened to love for the stranger?
What happened to humility?
When did the self-righteousness Trump
become the leader of anything that’s sup
posed to ultimately be involved with lead
ing people to Christ?
A lot of walls have gone up over the past
few years, just not the one that Mexico was
supposed to pay for. I hope those walls, so
much harder to tear down than any physical
structure, will now begin to crack.
I pray for that.
And I can’t think of a better time for it to
happen than during this Christmas season.

We need leaders who
care for their community
Dear Editor:
My grandfather, the Reverend L.W.
Pierce, was a Methodist minister in the first
half of the 20th century.
He was a member of the Holston
Conference and preached in Virginia, West
Virginia and Tennessee. His ministry actu
ally began on horseback. He cared deeply
for each and every member of the com
munity whether they were members of his
parish or not. He worked to bridge the gap
between miners and mine owners, between
the educated and the illiterate. My mother
was one of his eight children and through
her and my father I was brought up to value
the things that he did, caring, empathy,
kindness and the ability to listen and act
fairly.
I think that this country needs more people
like my grandfather now, people who will
reach across the aisle regardless of personal
beliefs, neighbor to neighbor, Democrat
to Republican, black to white and right on
down the list. To make that happen, I think
we need more leaders like my grandfather.
That is why I was so excited when Rev.
Wamock announced his intention to run
for the senate. He reminds me a lot of my
grandfather and I will be proud to have him
represent all Georgians in the U.S. Senate.
Sincerely,
Maggie Sjoberg
No more chaos; no more lies; no more
disinformation; no more extremism
Dear Editor:
Looks like Trump’s
Supreme Court saved our
democracy and our country.
What a relief! Now we can
all, all of us, know that we are
all in this together, not just in
this pandemic, but also in this
counUy, our one country, with
one guiding constitution and
many points of view. Our
highest court has followed our
constitution and the law of the
land to ensure that all states'
rights regarding their election
laws and procedures are theirs
and theirs alone. Remember,
the Supreme Court only inter
prets the laws and rules our
representatives make; they
never make any decision as to
how wise those laws and rules
are. If we don’t like their deci
sions, we are free to change
those laws and rules through
our system of representatives.
With a vaccine on the hori
zon the future looks prom
ising. Also, no more chaos;
no more lies; no more disin
formation; no more extrem
ism. There is plenty of middle
ground with lots of room for
everyone. Health care is a
mess; so many of us cannot
afford it and it’s too complex
for most to navigate. Much
of corporate power has got
ten out of control. Here in
Madison County we need
so much: reliable high speed
broadband throughout, paved
roads, water/sewer service,
property tax relief, good-pay
ing jobs, well supported
schools — the list is long.
We all want financial securi
ty, good health, happy lives
and safety. We can get there
if we work together instead
of stubbornly clinging to our
separate tribes. That will con
tinue to get us nowhere.
There is value in moder
ation. I believe Jon Ossoff
can get us there; Perdue is
too entrenched with the sta
tus quo. I believe Reverend
Raphael Wamock can
move us toward the center
rather than the extremes of
Loeffler who comes from
extreme wealth and has no
notion whatsoever of what
rural Madison County life is
like. I also know that Daniel
Blackman will take the pub
lic service commission in a
better direction than the cur
rent 22-year occupant of that
commission, McDonald, who
has increased our power bills
and failed for years to get
decent broadband in rural
areas like ours. Please join
me in voting for these three
on or before January 5, 2021.
With level-headed reason and
compromise we can improve
all our lives. We are all in this
together.
Sincerely,
Virginia Moss
