Sinkwich III named board
chairman of Athens Academy
Frank Sinkwich III as
sumed the role of chairman of
the Athens Academy Board
of Trustees in July. Sinkwich
succeeded Carl Nichols, who
served as board chairman
from 2021-23. The Board of
Trustees voted on this succes
sion earlier this year.
As a member of the Class
of 1989, Sinkwich is the first
Athens Academy alumnus
to serve as chairman of the
board. A trustee for over a
decade, Sinkwich is a long
time member of the finance
committee and most recent
ly served as the committee
chair. He and wife Lacy are
the parents of two children,
both of whom are gradu
ates of the school: Frank IV
(Class of 2017) and Adeline
(Class of2021).
Sinkwich is the president of
Northeast Sales Distributing
(Athens) and Skyland Dis
tributing (Asheville, N.C.).
He is the third generation to
lead the companies founded
by his grandfather, Heisman
Trophy Winner Frank Sink
wich, Sr. Sinkwich attended
Athens Academy for 14 years
and went on to graduate from
the University of Georgia,
where he studied classics.
Sinkwich is the sixth chair
man in Athens Academy’s
57-year history. Founding
Chairman John Wilkins led
the Board of Trustees for 42
years, until his passing in
2008. Mr. Wilkins was fol
lowed by Board Chairs Gene
Howard, James L. “Jimbo”
LaBoon, Jr., Beth Sanders
and Carl Nichols.

Dr. Avoke to join St. Mary’s
Internal Medicine Associates
Dr. Samantha Avoke, a
board-certified primary care
physician who completed
her internal medicine resi
dency in Athens, is joining
St. Mary’s Internal Medicine
Associates (SIMA), effec
tive Sept. 1.
Dr. Avoke comes to SIMA
from Piedmont Physicians
of Covington. She is a na
tive of Ghana who received
her medical degree from the
University of Ghana Medi
cal School, after which she
served as a medical officer in
several Ghanaian hospitals.
In 2017 she earned a mas
ter’s degree in public health
from the Gillings Graduate
School of Public Health
at the University of North
Carolina in Chapel Hill. She
then completed a one-year
internal medicine internship
at Piedmont Athens Region
al Medical Center, followed
by a three-year internal med
icine residency, also at Pied
mont Athens Regional.
In addition to providing pa
tient care, Dr. Avoke’s profes
sional interests include health
disparities in underserved
populations, public health
advocacy, intcrnational/glob-
al medicine and travel medi
cine. She is fluent in English.
When not practicing medi
cine, she loves cooking, trav
eling, spending time with her
family and watching movies.
At SIMA, Dr. Avoke will
provide adult wellness and
routine follow-up care for a
wide range of conditions, as
well as treating acute care
needs. She works to create
a relationship with patients
that promotes trust and open
communication, regardless
of whether the patient has an
ordinary cold or a complex
chronic condition.

Sankey, M.D., has joined
Piedmont Athens Neuro
surgery. Dr. Sankey’s office
is located in the Medical
Services Building on the
Piedmont Athens Region

Dr. Sankey treats a wide
array of neurologic disor
ders, including degenerative
spine disease, spinal defor
mity, brain and spinal trau
ma and tumors of the ner
vous system. His expertise is
in minimally invasive spine
surgery.
Dr. Sankey joins Piedmont
Athens Neurosurgery after
completing his medical de
gree at Johns Hopkins Uni
versity. He then completed a
neurosurgery residency and
a complex spine fellowship
at Duke University Medical
Center.
Dr. Sankey is accepting
new patients and accepts
most major insurance plans.
