High school volleyball
excited for region schedule

The high school varsity
volleyball team is excited to
start its challenging region
schedule this week, new
head volleyball coach Emi
ly Rupard says.
“We have a great group
of girls this year that are a
strong team unit,” Rupard
says about the season so far.
“They are putting in a lot of
hard work and constantly
trying to improve as indi
viduals and as a team.”
The varsity and junior
varsity teams have their first
region game at home Thurs
day, Aug. 24, where they
will play Seckinger. The
game starts at 5 p.m. JV will
also play North Oconee in a
non-region game at 7 p.m.

Junior Justin Smith and seniors Camden Smith and Braxton Waller were named Players of
the Week after the Franklin football game. Justin Smith, the offensive player of the game,
played 43 snaps. He had two knockdowns, three big blocks and graded out at 100%. Camden
Smith, quarterback and the special teams player of the game, had a 73 yard kickoff return
for a touchdown and a 51 yard punt return to the 3 yard line to set up another touchdown. He
also finished the night with 14 carries for 124 yards and 3 touchdowns rushing. He was one
of two passing for 17 yards and one touchdown. Waller, defensive player of the game, had 12
total tackles, four tackles for loss and three quarterback hurries. See game coverage on 12A.
‘Very tough’ region play
coming up for softball team

program has big games
coming up in region play to
keep the team in the hunt for
a post-season spot in a “very
tough” region, head coach
Ken Morgan says.
Morgan adds that the var
sity team is getting great
work in team building and is
being led by seniors Reagan
Fulcher, Mary Drayke Sum
mers and Laney Cox. He
notes that Fulcher and Sum
mers are batting above .350
while playing good defense.
“We are very excited
about the way the team has
been swinging the bat and
producing runs,” he says
about the season so far.

Aug. 24. JV plays first at
4:30 p.m. and varsity plays
at 6:30 p.m.

Fair exhibition coming up
The Comer Lions Club’s
Madison County Fair is set
for Sept. 26 through Sept.
30. The fair is a special tra
dition that takes place each
fall in Comer. “The Lions
Club members generously
give their time and energy to
make this hometown event,
which has taken place for the
last 75 years, a delight to the
people from the Northeast
Georgia area,” leaders said.
Hundreds of exhibits
and twelve community fair
booths will be entered in the
fair this year. The Comer Li
ons Club sponsors ribbons
and prize money. Those
placing 1st, 2nd, or 3rd
place win premium prizes
for their winning entries in
the amounts of $5, $4, and
$3 respectively. Youth and
adults will be judged sepa
rately. Every effort will be
taken to protect items, but
the Lions Club cannot be
held responsible for loss or
damage to entries. Those
interested in entering a craft,
canned good, sewing, cro
chet, knitting, or artwork
should read and pay close at
tention to the following rales
that have undergone specific
changes this year.
Check in for exhibits will
be Friday, Sept. 22, from 6
to 8 p.m., or Saturday, Sept.
23 from 8 a.m. to noon. Ex
hibits must be dropped off
on these two days as judging
will take place on Monday,
Sept. 25. Exhibits should
stay all week and may be
picked up the end of the fair.
Pick up will only be on Sun
day, Oct. 1, from 1 to 3 p.m.
You may drop off your items
the week of Sept. 18-22 at
the Madison County Coop
erative Extension Office.
Items not picked up will be
held at the Extension Office.
