ROTARY CLUB BUILDS RAMPS
Photos submitted
On Tuesday, Aug. 8, the Madison County Rotary Club Ramp Crew constructed a 4’ by 5’ landing and a 6 ft. ramp and repaired
the 24 ft. ramp that the ramp crew built 14 years ago for David Goolsby on West St. in Carlton. “Goolsby was struck by rheu
matoid arthritis as a young man, leaving him painfully crippled,” leaders said. “He has had multiple knee and hip replace
ments and now has heart complications with his aortic valve. He still battles daily with pain and he still gratefully uses the
ramp every day.” Goolsby is a lifelong resident of Madison County and is a graduate of Madison County High School, class of
‘79. Before being disabled, he worked 17 years in the granite works in Tiny Town near Carlton. He and his wife, Stephanie,
have six daughters and two sons who provide love and care and have given them 28 grandchildren. David joined the Rotar-
ians and volunteers who made the ramp improvement possible: Walton Hill, Alan Philips, Ed Brown, Bruce Gandy, Bobby
Gower, Danny Dills, Don Sullinger and Guy Spencer. This was the Rotary’s 915th ramp.

Members of the Rotary Club of Madison County and volunteers constructed its 916th handicap ramp, a 24-ft. access ramp, on
Aug. 17, for Frank and Linda Drake, living on Hwy. 72 in Madison County. Frank retired from Westinghouse and Linda from
the General Times Corporation; both were located in Athens. However, Frank and Linda are proud lifelong residents of Mad
ison County and Linda shared that she is a member of the Madison County High School class of ‘61. They have two children,
a son Scott who lives locally and a daughter, Allison Valdez, and four grandchildren, who provide love and support. Allison’s
husband Ron Valdez, and a Rotarian in Florida, contacted the Rotary about the need for the ramp. “Frank and Linda are
now beset by serious medical challenges,” Rotary leaders said. Frank has a heart condition, diabetes and is unsteady on his
feet. Linda is recovering from a stroke and requires a walker. The Rotarians and volunteers who worked on the ramp were Ed
Brown, Alan Phillips, Mitchell Hill, Don Sullinger and Bruce Gandy.

DOING HARD THINGS!
Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a Ger
man pastor and anti-Nazi dissi
dent who lived during Hitler’s
rise to power in the 1930s. He
opposed the persecution of the
Jewish people and spent his life
fighting against the evils of the
Nazi party. He was executed in a
German concentration camp on
April 9, 1945.
Bonhoeffer came to America
in 1939, but returned to Ger
many after only two weeks. Al
though he could have avoided
persecution by staying in the
U.S., he was compelled to return
to “live through this difficult pe
riod in our national history with
the people of Germany.”
Bonhoeffer chose the right
path - not the easy one. If we are
called to do difficult things, will
we?
