Eggs a scarcity.
The literary society still flour ishes,
vre learn.
Covington has a prosperous lodge of
Good Templars.
Apiil showers have commenced in
good earnest.
Considerable number of people from
the country in town sale day.
Fishing will soon engage the atten
tion of ye gentlemen of leisure.
We hear complaint of cholera among
the chickens in this vicinity.
Tom. Skelly needs a dose of conso
lation, but we will not tell why, Tom.
A good blacksmith can get a situa
tion. For information, inquire at this
office.
Springmas come again, and “lovely
woman” is seen on the streets quite of
ten.
The Methodist Sun lay school is ar
ranging for a picnic in May, we are
informed.
Mr. J. M. Reeve ,has been selected
Clerk of the Board of County Commis
sioners.
The Marshal’s street force began
work last Monday, and are putticg the
streets in order.
We regret to learn of the indisposi

sec him ottt again soon.
Mr. J. A. Pulliam has about recov
ered from the effects of the accident
which befell him several weeks ago.
Mr. Josh. King, of has
been spending a week in Calhoun and
at his father’s residence in the country.
We are pleased to see him looking well
and in good spirits.
House plants are stimulated in their
growth and blooming by watering them
with warm water, to which is added a
little ammonia Two spoonfuls to a
qfltfrt of water is sufficient.
See advertisement of Harris & Gore
relative to patent churn dash. This
dash has been tested, and excels
any invention of the kind yet intro
duced in this community
Hr W. E King is just opening a
neat little drug store three doors west
of the corner on the north side of
Court House street. We will perhaps
have more to say of the establishment
next week.
Spring is coming, and the air will
foon be filled with the perfume of
blossoms, the song of birds, the cackle
of the blithesome hen, the warbling of
the pond-frog, the bleating of the play
ful sheep upon the green—but we must
stop.
Our genial and clever young friend,
Mr. Henry Harlan, has concluded that
there is more money in tilling the soil
than in playing the part of & town
clerk, and is now engaged in planting
hi m t good crop. Your head is level
this time, Henry.
We find our information in regaid to
the death of Mr. Watts, the old gentle'
man who was assaulted by Powell last
"week was incorrect. Though his skull
was badly fractured, he is still living,
we learn, with strong indications of re
covery. l)r. Dudley has been attend
ing him.
An impromptu meeting was held in
tfee Court House Tuesday to ascertain
the feelings of the people of Gordon
relative to the proposed Constitutional
Convention. We were not present, but
learned no action of any kind was tak
ep, but there were two speeches—one
for, and the other against a convention,
and with this tho gathering .dis,
persed.
The protracted meeting which h&s
been in progress at the Baptist church
for the two weeks just past, is this week
being held in the Methodist church,
and still continaes with interest. There
have been added to the membership of
the Baptist church about fifteen names,
and the general good resulting is felt in
the community.
Rev. Dr. Braker’s farewell discourse
Sunday night was delivered in a
meliing and eloquent manner, and
elicited the undivided attention of his
,a 7 e congregation. The Doctor la
bored faithfully and zealously among
°ur people for two weeks, and doubt
less has been instrumental in the ac
complishment of much good in our
community.

We have been asked to request thac
all the members of the Good Templars
be present at a meeting to-night, as
the Court House has again been secured
their use, and it is desirable that as
many of the order, as can, be present,
as the meetings have been omitted from
unavoidable causes for several weeks,
and the cause should not he allowed to
go down.

We are informed that preparations
are being made for a Donation party
to be given next Friday night, at the
Court House. It will be gotten up
for the benefit of the parsonage, and
each one is expected to carry with
them articles suitable for furnish
ing the parsonage. A most beautiful
cake will be voted to the prettiest young
lady in town, and as we learn quite a
number of our young ladies will con"
tend for the compliment a lively contest
is likely to follow. Good music will
lend a charm to the occasion, and the
programme throughout is varied and
interesting. Everybody is invited to
be present.
Only two weeks from next Thursday
comes again the 26th of April, the day
set apart annually for the decoration of
the graves of our Confederate dead at
Resaca. The Ladies' Memorial Associ
ation of Resaca, we believe, last year,
made arrangements for an orator for the
occasion, and also selected the time.
We trust those who assume the duty
will inform us of their action, so that
we can notify through these columns all
those who may wish to attend. In our
judgment, as flowers will be backward
this spring, if the time Were put off a
week or so it would give more satisfac
tion. Let the occasion be observed
with the accustomed solemnity and in
dress tv all means.
A few days ago a Mr. Hardin, living
at Mr. R. JI. Nesbitt’s on Salacoa,
brought a letter to Judge Foster, at
this place, for him to read. It proved
to be from Tennessee, and referred to a
man who had left that State and had
come in this direction. A Mr. Adams,
of Farmington, was the writer, and he
alleged that this man had stolen a horse
and buggy, and had run away with a
woman, who was Mr. Hardin’s sister
On Tuesday a man and woman drove
n town, and answering the description
in the letter, at the Judge’s instance,
were arrested and the man sent to jail.
The man gives his name as W. L. Hop
per, and tells quite a different tale to
that told by Mr. Adams in his letter,
and says a personal difficulty between
himself and Adams is the only cause
of him wishing to put him to trouble,
and States that he and the woman with
him are lawrul man and wife and the
horse and buggy are his. The difficul
ty alone caused him to come to Geor
gia, he says, to escape a trial before the
courts. A few days, however, will de
velop the real facts in the case, as Judge
Foster has been in communication with
the authorities in Farmington and the
prisoner will be held until a satisfactory
showing has been had. •
V e had n n opportunity this week of
witnessing the operations of a plow, the
invention of Messrs. J. F. and R. J.
Wilson, which we feel it but justice to
its merits to assert our belief that it
combines more practical utility than any
one implement yet invented. The plow
hoe used, which is what is known as a
diamond point is attached to an ordina
ry plow stock, and there is an adjusta
ble wing on each side which is raised or
lowered at pleasure by means of han°
dies in easy reach of the operator, pro
jecting from the beam and connected to
the wing by means of a rod at the side.
The advantages of the plow, as proved
by experiment, are many, hut of those
which particularly recommend them
selves to the farming community is its
adaptation to hillside plowing, the wings
being adjusted at each turn and throw
ing the dirt all one way. It will also
obviate the leaving of ghastly water
rows unavoidable ; u ground broken b\
laying off “lands.'’ The wings give the
plow a capacity of several transforma
tions, by their simple adjustments being
rjady for any manner of work required
in ordinary plowing. We have seen
nothing in the plow line as yet which
will compare with it in utility and econ
omy, and we wish the enterprising and
clever gentlemec much success in its in-
Iroduction and general use
RES.aCA RIPPLES.
Resaca, Ga., April 5. 1877.
Dear Times :
The spring fights have opened in Re
saca—only two last Saturday. All
seem to be quiet along the lines this
morning.
The thieves are making their appear
ance in this section. Several have lost
corn from their cribs. Watch and
j catch the thief if you can, gentle
| men.
A Resaca man lost a quarter on an
egg bet one day last week.
Who was it bought the goose eggs
for Brahma hen eggs, to set? They
were hard to hatch were they not, Jim ?
Put them under another hen when one
leaves her nest, and you vill have a fine
lot of geese this summer, if they hatch
well.
Our attorney has another case. Rut
says he cannot follow his first one to
the big court. He -ays his license on -
ly allows him to practice in Justice
Courts.
Some of our merchants have received
their spring goods.
Mr. J. R. Cox, one of our oldest cit
izens, has been confined to hi- room,
quite sick, for several days, but I learn
he is on the improve. I will be glad
to see the old gentleman on the streets
soon, for he carries sunshine wherever
he goes.
We have another doctor near Resaca.
I heard him prescribe a large dose ot
small fish hooks to one of his customers
a few days ago.
Our council have concluded to let
<he people work out their street tax at
sixty cents a day. Our town council
are clever gentlemen, and try to make
such town laws as will suit the citi
zens.
Very truly, Moses.
PLALWILLE PEAPILIXftS.
Mr. Underwood gave us an excellent
Sermon Sunday evening at 3 o’clock.—
He will preach here again on the fifth
Sunday and the Saturday before.
Mr. Ledbetter, assisted by 11. 0.
Barney, will organize a Sundav school
at Union Grove next Sunday mortiiner
at 9 o’clock. Come all, and join Lei’s
have a fu'l turn-out.
Mr. John Gunn is quite sick. We
hope he may soon recover.
An extra train passed our place from
New Orleans on its way to Dalton the
other day, and was going at the rate of
fifty miles an hour. It contained a num
ber of Northern capitalists who had
been visiting through the South to in
vest in iron arid copper mines
Dr. Miller is getting quite a number
of patients, some of one complaint and
some of another. Rut those who are
love-sick he can cure every time. lie
makes a specialty of that.
A. Webber has anew cut to his
daocing. breeze to the wall, girls and
boys ; when Andrew and Ren are on
the floor they are regular corn smashers.
We congratulate our young men on
their fine deportment at the dance Mon
day night. Glad to say not a drop of
“mountain dew” was on the place.—
That is right, boys, when you go among
the ladies, leave your bottles in the
shops. Ax.
ROCK CREEK RECORDINGS.
Rock Creek, April 4, 1877.
Editor Calhoun Times :
Our commu’ ity has been very quiet
for some time Farmers are all at
work in good earnest this fine weath
er. I here has been a good deal of
corn planted for the last two or three
weeks. Wheat is growing rapidly and
looking well. We notice a field on
Messrs. Garlington & Shorter’s farm
which is ahead of any we have seen,
and if nothing happens to it they are
sure of an abundant harvest. Mr. Gar
lington is one of the best farmers in
the county. He runs his farm with
hired labor, and by his good manage
ment is making it n success. He works
with as much system as any iron work
or other public enterprise, and if our
farmers will all follow his example in
farming we will have more provisions,
more money and better times.
We passed the Court Ground of our
district Friday of last week. Court
was in session, and from the crowd of
people in attendance we suppose there
must be considerable business for the
officers of the district. We noticed
Cols. Kiker and McConnell were pres
ent. Each one seemed to be trying to
convince the court that his side of the
claim was right.
\\ e have a few mechanical enter
prises in our community. Messrs. .Mann
& Terry are carrying on a tan yard,
but on account of the stringency in
money matters, the tannery is doing
hot little bussiness at present. Esquire
Mat n also lias a saw and corn mill
which is doing pretty good business.— j
Mr. 11. F Everett is doing a good b s
iness at his wood and blacksmith shop
He also has a small country store which
is a great accommodation- to the com
munity.
We notice there is anew secret so
ciety being organized about over the ,
country, known as the Greenback Club, '
from what we can learn of it, it seems
to be a political organization advocating
a third party. We sup, -e something
on the Pomeroy stylo.
We are sorry to learn that the Tem
perance cause is waning in Calhoun
1 Cannot Uncle Davy and Maj -r R
j come to their rescue and revive the
cause again ?
Very respectfu ly, S. P.
NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES.
Superior Court opened in Whitfield
this week.
Dalton Enterprise: We notice from
out Northern and Western exchanges
that clubs are being formed for the pur
pose of devising means and ways t
move to and settle in the genial Suet.
In this matter, while vast mu tiiud
are getting ready to move with theii
capital, mechanical genius and courage
North Georgia should not remain at
idle spectator. Our natural advantage -
should be laid before these people and a
cordial invitation should be extended t
them to come and s.e us, investigate th.
inducements which we offer and that if
they elect to settle with us they will
meet with a welcome. Such a course
ould redound to our credit as a people,
j would increase the value of our proper
ty and in many other ways push lot
ward the Dali of progress. Half a doz
en live men, running small manufacto
ries would do more to resurrect our
broken fortunes in a year than a wagon
load of cross road politicians could talk
in a thousand years. Let us fail into
line and march.
Rome Courier : When we speak of
to is part of Georgia having a brilliant
future, we have reason for using that
term in a literal sense —for that future
will be mat e brilliant with the glitter of
copper and silver ore. Already do
Paulding and Haralson counties begin
to sparkle. Mr. Rubt. Thomas, yestei -
day, brought to this office snine very rich
specimens of copper ore from the lor
mer county ; and firm the latter he
showed us some ore of silver bizuiuth
and antimony. These mines are now
being woiked. In the Paulding county
copper mine—about three miles from
Drake Town—a shaft has been sunk GO
feet. Mr. Thomas thicks when tiny
have gone twenty feet deeper, they can
begin to ship ore. The silver bizmuth
and antimony mine, in Haralson court.-
ty, is about six miles from Buchanan,
and four miles from the Carroll line. Al
ready are parties investing in this
property. Now is a rare opportunity
for someone to make a fortune. - Mr.
Robt. Fane is t the head of the com
pany workii-g the copper mine, which
is said to extend some twenty miles, it
not farther.

EXPECTORANT.
This unrivaled preparation has per
i formed some of the most astonishing
I cures that are recorded in the annals of
history. Patients suffering for years from
the various diseases of the Lungs, after
trying different remedies, spending thou
sands of dollars in traveling and doctor
, ing, have, by the use of a few bottles,
entirely recovered their health.

Dear Sir When in Aiken, laat winter, I used your

I I will not go to Florida next winter as I intended.
Send me one dozen bottles, by express, for some

This certifies that I have recommended the use of
Dr. Tutt’B Expectorant for diseases of the lungs
for the post two years, and to my knowledge many
bottles have been used by my patients with the hap

This Sarsaparilla is a combination of
vegetable alteratives Stillingia, Man
drake, Yellow Dock —with the lodides
of Potassium and Iron, and is the most
efficacious medicine yet known for
the diseases it is intended to cure.
Its ingredients are so skilfully com
bined, that the full alterative effect of
each is assured, and while it is so mild
as to be harmless even to children, it is
still so effectual as to purge out from the
system those impurities and corruptions
which develop into loathsome disease.
The reputation it enjoys is derived
from its cures, and the confidence which
prominent physicians all over the coun
try repose in it, prove their experience
of its usefulness.
Certificates attesting its virtues have
accumulated, and are constantly being
received, and as many of these cases are
publicly known, they furnish Convincing
evidence of the superiority of this Sar
saparilla over every othef alterative
medicine. So generally is its superi
ority to any other medicine known, that
we need do no more than to assure the
public that the best qualities it has ever
possessed are strictly maintained.
