TOWN AND COUNTY AFFAIRS.
Doff your flannels.
The egg market is inactive.
Bread stuffs slightly eletated in
price.
Now for those Hibernia Sunday even
ing walks.
Remember, the Good Templars meet
to-night.
Pat Conoway, of Rome, is on a visit
to his home in this county, and is look
ing cheerful.
We are pleased to learn that Mis®
Ray Atkin, who has been quite sick
the past week, is rapidly recovering.
Mr. Robert Cantrell left Calhoun
last Wednesday morning for Gaines
ville, where he goes to attend the State
'Baptist Convention ,
Quite a number of our young ladies
and gentlemen visited the river and
Hibernia bluff last Sunday evening.
They had a good deal of fun.
Diaft-playing has become fashiona
ble in Calhoun, and much of rhe leis
ure hours of our young men will be
taken up in playing this game.
...
We predict that there Will be a Wed*
ding in Calhoun soon, judging from the
amount of courting done last Friday
night week at the party.
Last Sunday furnished Tom Skelly
with an episode in his history he will
ever look back upon with many bitter
regrets. You should try to be more
careful next time, Tom.
The planing mi 1 and gin house of
Mr. Mark A. Moore caught fire the
other day, and might have resulted dis
astrously bad not the dames by a little
timely work been extinguished before
they were under good headway.
The Calhoun Debating Society has
now entered upon its fourth yeark Dur
ing this time it has debated about 70
questions—several of them in public—
and they are always interesting.
Dr. Will E. King has on hand a full
supply of perfumery of all sorts, toilet
soap, hair oil, lily white, bloom of
youth, and everything else that goes
to make up a woman’s toilet. The
Doctor is fast gaining popularity among
our people as an experienced, polite and
clever druggist, and we bespeak for
him a liberal patronage.
If you haven't an opportunity to at
tend a picnic or something of the sort,
and wish to be reminded forcibly that
spring is here, get a garden hoe, pull off
your coat and swing it the hoe half a day
in some hard spot in your garden, and
if you arc not used'to the exercise, you
will be quite thoroughly convinced by
meal time.
Strawberry time will soon be along
again, and as some of our citizens will
have a good supply oT these delicious
berries, we believe they should revolve
the matter in their minds and conclude
to give the young people an occasional
little festival, which we foel sure would
be highlv appreciated—and—well, we
would like to be thero with a spoon and
saucer ourselves.
The meeting of the Good Templars
announced in last week’s issue, at the
Court House, last Saturday night was
one of considerable interest. A large
crowd, considering all things, were pres
ent, and all manifested a deep desire
for the success of the cause. A motion
was made to the effect that their time
of meeting be changed from Saturday
night to Friday night, and every Good
Templar is requested to be present at
their meeting tonight and vote either
for or against the question.
A wretched looking Dutchman mak
ing his living by tramping through the
country begging as he goes, called at
the office of one of our lawyers one
day this week, and holding his worn
out hat in his hand in a kind of under
asked the Colonel for a penny,
lhe Colonel’s sympathies were at once
aroused for this niiserab'o looking ob
ject (.f human depravity and very sym
pathetically told him that he hadn’t
any ready cash on hand, but if ho were
at his house he would give him some
thing to eat and a place to sleep, too. The
tramp paused a moment before taking
his exit without specking a word, and
the Colonel proceeded with his writing
thinking no more about, his visitor, until
he wenthome at night, when to hisuitcr
astonishment the tramp stepped to the
front and gently remarked : ü ßy faith
und jabeth, me bait you hum, Colonel!”
The Colonel didn’t go back on his word,
•nd next morning the tramp went on
way rejoicing,
We suggest now fch*at Miller and

Mr. D. R. Sanford and lady, of Ma
rion, S. C., are visiting Calhoun, and
will probably make this their home
for the summer. We are at all times
glad to welcome such as they into out
community.
The spelling match at the academy
last Monday night afforded the usual
amount of enjoyment. There will be
another next Monday night week,
which all are respectfully invited to at
tend. /
A fishing patyj, consisting of about
a dozen, left yesterday morning for
Dew’s Mills. They had all the fishing
tackle necessary, and we expect to see
them rolling ia this evening with a
wagon load of the finny tr.be.
We do not know that it makes a
young man more popular to join the de
bating society, but we have noticed
that within the last two years six of its
members have married, and there are
several more ready, willing and wait*
ing.
Our obliging depot agent, Mf. j. E.
Parrott, is in possession of a sewing
machine, which for beauty and conven
ience is ahea 1 of anything in the ma
chine line we have yet seen. It is of
the Singer pattern, and is the finest
style of machine they manufacture, and
we learn, through ihe agency that it is
the only one of this kind now north of
Macon. It is in a cabinet case of finest
exterior ami thoroughly lined with
satin wood, with folding cover of
nious construction, and the machinery
is handsomely inlaid with pearl. Mr.
Leonard, the agent of the company at
Atlanta, who was in our town this week,
made the sale, we believe.

I hursday the wind blew with more
than March fierceness, but yesterday
the weather settled placidly into spring
mildness, the gladdening sunshine and
the cheerful voice of the farm laborer
giving true evidence that the season’s
work is fairly begun. The wheat
pects, we learn, are not the most prom
ising, though if everything favors its
development from now on a fair yield
may be looked for at harvest. Farmers
are somewhat behind with work, but
will put in good time to make up for
that which has fceeu lost. Guano has
gone out to the farms, as usual, in large
quantities, and cotton, we fear, is to
demand attention where provisions
should be the consideration When
will the people gaij wisdom from tteir
experience ?
There is much in He May number
of Ballou’s Magazine to attract all
classes of readers. The illustrated ar
ticles are fresh and very interesting, the
stories first class, the poetry good and
the wit and tun by M. Quad particu
larly laughable, there being three pages
by the latter humorist, and he has taken
much t-ouble to make Ins department
entertaining and acceptable. Ballou’s
Magazine is one of the most entertain*
ing serials in the country, and at the
same time the cheapest, being only
51.50 per year, or 15 cents single cop
ies, postpaid, and is well known in cvn
ery part of the Union. Fublished by

We are now just entering the dull
months of summer. We dislike to cut
off names from our list, but after many
appeals for settlements there are some
who have not even asked further in*
dulgeuce or otherwise given attention
to our demands. As we have before
stated, we do not iotend just now to
send out written statements, but we
here again ask those who are behind to
please give us some aid if possible, or
notify us they want their papers con
tinued, with some assurances by which
we may look for assistance during the
summer. We intend to revise our list
about the first of May, and in justice
to our business we will be compelled to
erase many names unless we have re
sponses that will justify us in conti u
ing them, a* we cannot endure the ex
tra expense of carrying a large number
of uon-paying subscribers through a
season when at best it is # tug to meet
dooming obligations,
I’LAIXVILLF. PEXCILIXGS.
Times are so extremely dull in and
around our little village that I could
find nothing for your columns last week,
and little better than nothing this week.
Our merchants are doing nothing
comparatively, but the farmers are so
busy getting their corn in they cannot
get to come to town.
Glad to see a fe# more out at the
Union Grove Sunday School. Hope a
larger crowd will be present exactly at
9* o’clock. We regret exceedingly to
see so many children running around
town and fishing and playing all day
on Stmday. Fathers and mothers, don’t
you have no future prospects and hopes
for that boy or girl of yours ? Who
will God hold responsible for the early
training of your children ? Not the
little girls and boys, but you alone, dear
fathers and mothers, so turn anew leaf
over and next Sunday send them fish
ing after God’s Word and playing and
winging afound God’s altar, at Union
Grove at 9 o’clock. Come, let’s have
a full turn out, and show Bro. Under
wood by our presence that we have an
interest as well as the rest of She Cir
cuit.
There were two of the largest wild

last Tuesday evening that we ever saw.
They brought four dollars. Ore
Weighed 22 pounds and the other 23.
Oar district is greatly opposed to the
Constitutional Convention, but if there
has to be one we would like to have the
Hon. W. R. Ran Kin go as the Ilep

true, noble and genuine patriot, a man
who will work for the interest of his
people and country; so let’s all unite
and have our mao.
The river has been so high for a
week past that the section men had to
sit up all night and day to keep the
drift off the bridge.
We regret to learn of Professor Led

able to fill his place.
Glad to see Mr. Jno. Gunn up again.
He looks badly after bis long spell of
sickness.
Gardens are looking fresh and green.

DR. TUTT'S
EXPECTORANT.
This unrivaled preparation has per
formed some of the most astonishing
cures that are recorded in the annals of
history. Patients suffering for years from
the various diseases of the Lungs, after
trying different remedies, spending thou
sands of dollars in traveling and doctor
ing, have, by the use of a few bottles,
entirely recovered their health .
“WON’T 60 TO FLORIDA."

DR.TUTT;
Dear Sir When in Aiken, last winter, I used your
Expectorant for my cough, and realized more benefit
from it than anything I ever took. lam so well that
I will not go to Florida next winter as I Intended.
Bend me one dozen bottles, by expross. for some
friends. ALFRED CTJSHINO.
133 West Thirty-first Street.
Boston, January 11,1874.
This certifies that I have recommended the use of
Dr. Tutt’s Expectorant for diseases of the lungs
for the past two years, and to my knowledge many
bottles have been used by my patients with the hap
piest results. In two cases where it was thought con
firmed consumption had taken place the Expectorant
effected a cure. R. H. SPRAGUE, M.D.

diseases that have baffled the best of
human skill. Whilerthey produce power
ful effects, they are, at the same time, the
safest and best physic for children. By
their aperient action they gripe much less
than the common purgatives, and never
give pain when the bowels are riot inflamed.
They reach the vital fountains of tiie blood,
and strengthen the system by freeing it
from the elements of weakness.
Adapted to all ages and conditions in
all climates, containing neither calomel
nor any deleterious drug, these Pills may
be taken with safety by anybody. Their
sugar-coating preserves them ever fresh,
and makes them pleasant to take; while
being purely vegetable, no harm can arise
from their use in any quantity.
