TOWN AND COUNTY AFFAIRS. Flour is on the decline. The fruit crop will he unusually largo this jear. The Good Templars picnic has been postponed until some time in June. Blackberries are in bloom, and the prospect for an abundant crop was nev er better. The Dalton district meeting of the M. E. Church, South, for 1878, will be held at Calhoun, by agreement at the late meeting at Ringgold. The farmers are greatly encouraged at the wheat prospect. The crop is generally pronounced the best for a number of years. The district meeting of the lnde, pendent Order of Good Templars for this Congressional District will convene at this place on the 2d of June. Our streets looked somewhat desert ed yesterday—very nearly all of our town people being at the Method st Sunday School picnic. Mack Harlan didn’t go to the picnic Friday, but one of his thoughtful lady friecds sent him just such a dinner as he never fails to enjoy. The A lania drummer who challenged ; our champion draught player for a game j one day this week will be more careful j in the future how he boasts of his good playing around our town. • The young gentlemen who went the “overland route" to the picnic yester day, had such a good appetite at dinner time that they didn’t even wait for their plates to be helped before they were “dishing" with their fingers into everything within their reach. Mies Mollie Ransone, of this place, while looking in a drawer for some at tide was accidentally shot by a pistol which had been laid there. The ball entered one of her fingers inflicting a rather ugly wound. The accident hap pened Wednesday. Messrs. D. N. Hightower and J. N. Kiker, accompanied bv their families, took a considerable jaunt in the vicini ty of Mr. James M. Harlan’s farm, lasl Mouday. We learn they had a good deal of fun anJ quite a pleasant trip. The Methodist Sunday School pic nic yesterday was one ot the most pleas ant affairs of the season. Everybody had a good time who attended. The day’s pleasures were participated in un til a late hour in the afternoon, and even then some seemed loathe to leave the delightful spot. On the 16th instant a rich discovery was made on the tower level of the shaft of the Findley gold mine, near Dahlonega. It is a well defined regu lar vein, shows an astonishing yield of gold, and it is said will assay $3,000 per ton. A few young ladi.s and gentCmen of this place met at the residence of fl. K. Hicks, lasb Monday night, and organized a society bearing the name •of the “Independent Amateur Club.” We earnestly hope that this Club will prove an entire success, and that its meetings may be pleasant and profita ble to all its members. The Club will meet next Monday uight at the same pipe-. . One of our young men hahl' ee mo s > deeply in love with a young riidy not a great wsys from this place, that he dreams about her every night. lie dream ed one night this week that he was in Paradise alone with this young lady, and was overheard muttering in his lumbers, “I guess you’ll have me now sure, as there ain’t no one else for you.” Lookout for a wedding soon. Prof. A. The little Bulgarian town of Turtu kai, si’uated across the Danube from Oltenitza. possessed many Christian in habitants, in numbers far fewer than ihe Tucks. On the night of the 16th the Turkish citizens of the town joined with the troops in the fortress, from which the village takes its name, and began an onslaught upon he Chris, tians. The carnage began in all parts of the town at once. The doors of those who attempted to defend tneir homes were broken in, an I the massa cres and outrages were perpetrated within the dwellings. In many in stances, however, the attacking par ties encountered the families seated to gether in front of t’ncir houses. The methol in such cases generally was to either saber or shoot the father and el der sons, to break the skulls of the old women, and then to seize and outrage the younger women. In very many cases the outrages were perpetrated by neighbors and citizens of the town well known to the poor miserable victims Nobody was spared who was captured. Scenes of frightful atrocity occurred. The cries of the fleeing women and children were heard at the outpostj of the Roumanian troops encamped below O'tenitza, and a suia 1 party under cov er of the darkness ventured across the river. They brought two Bulgar.an men back with them. One of the tu-' gitives was quite an old man, and was foi a long time unable to speak from grief and wild terror. 'When, on Thursday, he was composed sufficiently to tain with the Roumanian officers, he described the killing of his wife and eldest son in his sight, and the carrying off of his daughter. The only pretext seems to have been the ineffectual bom bardment of Oltenitza from the old fortress of Turtukai and from the new water batteries which have been erect ed along the river bank. No damage was done bv Turkish batteries. BARGAINS ! One Shoninger Piano. Bran new at factory—at a little more than one half it value.
