affairs. Now trot the palm leaf forward. !■ A fino rain fell here yesterday. Remember the election next Tues day. . We bear complaint of the “bud worm ’ injuring young corn. A good suggestion is like a crying baby at church. It should be carried out. The cut worms and cabbage lice Beem to be the boss gardeners around here just oow. Henry Wright, a negro boy in the employ of Col. Joe McConnell, died one day this week of pneumonia. Mr. J. A. Clarke leaves with us some fine specimens of wheat. llis pros pects for a fine- yield are unexcep tional. ' \ ' ttsfloulkt Notice.' All members of Oothcaloga lodge are requested to be present at the next reg ular communication, as there is business of importance to bo transacted. Done by order of lodge. B. M. llarian, Secretary. In consequence of the continued dry spell, the grass is losing its pristine freshness, and the tops of potatoes are turning yellow and dying much earlier in the season than usual. Gardens are suffering most of anything for want of rain. Corn is backward, but usually clean and in good condition to grow should rains yet favor. A lady called at Overland’s photo graph gallery sometime since to have some photograhps made, The artist made the photographs in workman liko manner, and sent her a proof, and she returned it with these remarks : “My husband don’t like these pictures ; he says that vou have cut my face square in two with the mouth” The District Convention of the Good Templars here last Saturday, we learn, was a very satisfactory session, and much was done toward the accomplish ment of good for the order. The lodge here from some cause seems to be in a rather paralyzed condition, and wo would be sorry to see an institution the benefits of which have been so general ly acknowledged go down for want of proper interest of its members. The delegates from our neighboring towns praised the hospitalities extended them while hero. At night a public meeting was held and Mr. W. M. Boswell, well known to ur citizens, delivered a very practi. cal aid earnest temperance address, which was generally appreciated. We call attention to the advertise ment of Messrs. Graham & Barnett which appears in the Times. These gentlemen are prepared to furnish the |ub>ic from their excellent mill a good quality of lumber, shingles, lathes, etc. at the lowest figures. Mr. A. M. Gra. ham, under whose practical and direct supervision the business of the mill is conducted, is well known to the people of our county as a gentleman of true go-ahead disposition, and to whose in (iustry and fair dealing is attributable to a great measure the successful trade built up for the mill since its estab lishment in its present location. To al wanting lumber, shingles or lathes we recommend Graham & Barnett. Peterson’s Magazine for July is on our table, ahead as usual of all others. The principal steel engraving, “Cherry Ripe,” after Meyer Von Bremen, is one of the most beautiful we have ever seen, even in this magazine. Then fol lows a mammoth colored 6teel fashion plate, with five figures, a miracle of loveliness. In addition to this, there are some twenty other engravings of fashions. There are also colored pat terns of butterflies and flowers for applique embroidery, besides a dozen or more other patterns in crochet, em broidery, &c., &c., for the work-table. Mrs. Hooper begins a powerful nove let, “Blue-Beard’s Closet Mrs. Ste phens continues her “Dependent Cou sin,” a story which is alone worth the subscription price; and in addition, Frank Lee Benedict, and the author of “The Second Life” have thrilling tales; while all the rest are far above those usually found in periodicals “Peterson,” in fact, is celebrated for its stories. This is, undoubtedly the cheapest and best of the lady’s books ; and it combines more attractions than any other. Anew volume begins with this number affording an excellent up portunity to subscribe. Price, two dol lars a year, with great deductions to clubs, and premiums to persons getting up tlubs. Specimens sent, gratia, to those wishing to get up clubs. Ad dress Cbas. J. Peterson, 306 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia. Dr. W. J. Reeves, Jr., who claims Chattanooga as his home is at present at his fathers, we regret to learn, con fined with an attack of fever. TnE CnATTANoooA Times.—lf you want to know about Chattanooga, the most promising young city in the South, and one that don’t stop growing for any kind of financial calamity, send Fifty Cents for the Weekly Time§- three months. Price of the Dai ly is 75 cents per month, or £B.OO a year, and the Weekly is £2.00 a year. The Weekly contains forty eight col umns, aod “It is one of the best pa pers in the" State.” County ComjsjroMUttr*. Rcsacu. Resaca, Ga., Tune 7, 1877. Dear Times : My only excuse for not sending you anything from our town for the past few weeks is that I have been very busy fishing and gathering dewberries. Our town is very dull now. It is said that the laziest man in town has to stand twice in one place to make a shadow. The Resapa Fish Trap Company caught a shovel nose cat one day last week, weighing twenty pounds, and his shovel nose extending abmt two feet over his under jaw, lie was the nosest nose fish I ever saw. Jackson uses snakes to fire the saw mill engine with these warm days Don’t squall so for a small snake, Jacky. ■.One of our town boys has got too lazy to roar his boat, aud he has figged up aset of sails and may be seen taking his ease traveling up and down the river. When shall we have another tight ropo performance, Prof. Gale ? Let the people know next time, and you will have a large crowd. Last Tuesday night about 11 o’clock the alarm of fire was sounded in our town, when it was discovered that Mrs. S. A. Buckner’s residence, just outside of the incorporation, was on firo. Ev erything in the kitchen was destroyed, including provisions and clothing. The fire was first discovered in the kitchen and if the citizens could have got there a few minutes sooner the house might have been saved by knocking it down, but there being no water in the yard both house and kitchen were entirely destroyed. Last Sunday morning at 8.15 o’clock Mr. Jacob R. Cox, one of our oldest citizens, died very suddenly in his eighty.-third year. None knew the old gentleman but to love bim, and his children have the sympathy of the eutire community. He was a member of the Baptist church and a christian-hcarled honorable gentleman. The same day and date (June 3d) Mrs. Amanda Bobinson died at 9.10 o’clock p. m., after a lingering illness of several weeks. Mrs. Robinson was about forty years old, and a member of the Methodist church, and a true Chris tian. She was perfectly willing to die. She leaves a mother, husband and four children to mourn her loss. We tender our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family. Two deaths in our little town of its citizens inside of thirteen hours. This should be a warning to all to be pre pared to die. Very respectfully, Moses. Plaiuvillc. Since I last wrote about our Sunday School it has done wonderful wotks. — We had only fifty-five then, now we have one hundred and forty-two mem bers. Hurrah for Union Grove. We expect to have a go and time on the 4th of July, so come over and bring your lady, Mr. Laprade, of Rome, will de liver us au address, and Mr. Under wood, our pastor, Mr. R. W. Hickey and our Sunday School Superintend, cut. There has been a good deal of sick*, ness lately ia our midst, but our little doctor briugs them all right. If you are sick send for Dr. Dowdv, if you don’t want to be sick go to Dr. Dowdy and he will keep you from be ing sick. H. C. Barney is having his children to practice songs for their exhibition. We learn the report is going the rounds that he is going to elose his school in June. It is false. He still expects to teach until September and perhaps October, so if you want your children to go to a first-class school, send them to D. C. Barney. Beware of wolves in sheep’s clothing. Neighbors, don’t believe everything that is told you, for good, pious and loud praying people don’t always con fine themselves strictly to the truth. * Butter is o ily worth 12} cents per pound, and eggs 8 cents a dozen, and spring chickens 12} and 15 cents a piece. J. H. Brownlee’s store was broken into and robbed of 40 or 50 dul'ars the other day. The thief still runs at large. Very truly yours, Curtis. The District Meeting I. O. G. T. Marietta, Ga., J uno 5, 1877. Editor Calhoun Times : Below I give you a synopsis of the proceedings of the District Lodge ;of Good Templars for the 7th Congression al District : The lodge was caikd to order by the District Templar, R. M. Mitchell, of Acworth, with the following officers in the respective chairs :i W. Mi Bos- Well, Counselor; Mrs. In. Marehman, W. Y.; W. O. H. Shepard, W. R. 3. ; Col. Ben. E Green, R. W. C. T. ; Rev. W. C. Richardson, Chaplain. Prayer was then offered by the Chap lain, when the Chair appointed a com mittee on credentials, who reported the following delegates present and enti tled to seats : Minnehaha lodge, 103 Marietta— Misses S. Gray, of Robinson lodge, in a short but handsome speech, wel comed the members of the District lodge, to which District Templar R. M. Mitchell responded appropriately. On motion, tho following were ap pointed a committee to prepare and re port business Lr the afternoon session : Col. Green, of Dalton, xVppleton, of Rome, and Hillhouse, of Calhoun. Reports from lodges were then called for, and Col. Green, of Dalton, made an effective speech reciting the history of his lodge and of the cause in Dal ton. He said that their membership had been at times reduced, but that they were upheld by the promise “where two or three are gathered together in my name there am I in the midst of them.” Tho various lodges through their delegates, made reports showing the or der in good condition, and while not so strong in members, really on a better footing than ever before. Space will not allow me to give a synopsis of re ports. The'chair added to the committee to prepare and report business B o, Har kins, of Calhoun, and instructed ihem to inquire into and report as to ihe ad visability of a public meeting. The lodge then took a recess for din ner, which Mr. D. N. Hightower had prepared sumptuously, and which the delegates eat with an appetite that soon lightened the burdened tables. At 2} o’clock the meeting was again called to order, and the committee re ported recommending a public meeting to he held in the Court House at 7} o’clock. Adopted. Rev. W. C. Richardson then offered the following resolution, which was unanimously adopted : Resolved , That each member of this convention interest himself' in provi ding for and employing speakers to ad dress such audiences ns may be collect" ed at any time or place, when there is any prospect of advancing the cause of temperance ia the district. The time of the convention was principally occupied in the discussion of questions of importance to the or der, and much good was done although but little business was transacted that can be put on^paper. Col. Green then offered the following, which was unanimously adopted by a rising vote : Resolved , That the thanks of this District Grand lodge are due and aie hereby tendered to the members of Robinson lodge No. 180, generally, and Mr. D. N. Hightower, for their courte sy and hospitality. Rome was then chosen as the next place of meeting, and Triday, the 26th day of October fixed as the time of meeting. On motion, the following were then appointed a committee to take into con sideration the best means of employing speakers : Mitchell, of xlc vorth, Green, of Dalton, and Govan, of Rome. Adjourned with benediction by the Chaplain. After adjournment a county lodge was organized with Dr. 11. K. Main for County Chief Templar. We shall always remember our visit to Calhoun with pleasure The young ladies from Marietta were delighted, and would like an opportunity for an other visit. Refreshed and encouraged we renew our work until the next refreshing ft Home, and may God grant us success iu our work, that love may overcome sel fishness, until each man’s weal shall be all men’s care.
