The first open cotton bloom %f the
season was handed us last Saturday by
our enterprising citizen, Mr Z. T.
Gray. Mr. John Adams also hands us
one later in this week.
Since the above was put in type Mr.
A. J. Fletcher brings us a cotton stalk
containing several well developed bolls,
and says he discovered blooms in his
crop on the 26th of June.
A hail storm, the like of which has
never before been seen by our people,
visited this part of the country yester
day evening. Thickly fell the hail for
nearly ten minutes the lumps the size
of hen eggs, and even larger. Avery
refreshing shower first accompanied,
then followed the hail. The extent of
damages from the storm to growing
crops we are unable to state, but sup
pose it must be considerable.
Persons who visited Chattanooga and
Atlanta on the 4th express themselves
generally disappointed at the demon
strations witnessed. The balloon as*
cension in the former city was quite a
treat and the only feature really worth
witnessing. The latter city, we be,-
Irevc, made no attempt at display, the
crowd being the principal attraction.—
The excursion trains on this road were
literally packed aDd the swarming mul
titudes with fortitude worried through
the Just and perspiration of the day
almost wishing they were at home.

Plainville, Ga., July 5, 1877,
Editor Calhoun Times :
You have been favored with occa
sional items from Plainville, and in ma
king my report 1 will endeavor to note
but briefly in this, matters in this part
of the county lest the patience of your
readers should be tired in reading some
thing of length but little interest.
We aie having some dry weather
now. Corn, cotton and the gardens arc
suffering for want of rain. Should the
seasons be favorable, however, for the
next four or five weeks, it is hoped we
will yet be able to house an abundance
of corn. People are laying by corn a
little earlier than usual, I suppose ow
ing to the fact that May and June were
rather dry months and the ground re
mained in good working condition so
that the work of stirring the soil pro
gressed without detention.
The time is near at hand when the
youth of our farming community will
be released, for a time, from the plow
and hoe and be permitted to enter the
school room to receiye that instruction
which will fit them for usefukess in
life. Our State has wisely considered
the subject of genefal education, and
made provision for the same, and we
arc looking forward, with much inter
est to the opening of our school on
next Monday, the 9th instant, under
the control of L. P. ILmunnd, one
among the most energetic and perse
veriug young men of our ccuutry. He
has been in school at Dahionega fur
three years, taught school during his
summer vacation, and gave general sat
isfaction. lie now returns home with
honor from the college to take charge
of our academy by the choice of this
community. We invite you now to
send your children to school. Those at
a distance can procure board at reason
able prices. The academy is situated
in a very healthy location. Come on ;
amplo provisions will be made.

Resaca.
Resaca, Ga., luly 5, 1877.
Dear Times :
The steam thresher of the Messrs.
Hill created some excitement for the
people last Saturday. I have been
told that they cleaned two bushels of
wheat per minute for T. O. Buckner.
Mr. J. R. Noble had anew miller at
bis corn mill last Saturday. The first
bushel John ground cost him eighty
cents, and he said he had enough of the
mill business —that is, the grinding
part —said be could not run the engine
and grind too, and must quit one, so he
paid for the bushel he spoiled and went
to his engine declaring he was not cut
out for a miller.
Watermelons were plen iful in our
town last week at from ten to sixty
cents each. They were from Florida
Col. Bradford’s “pet” le r t without
bidding him farewell. Dry your tears,
Newt, there will be plenty of tramps
this fall, and you C3n then get oue, per
haps that will stick.
Mr. J. It. Noble is putting the flour-
ing mill in running order, and intends
to commence grinding for custom next
Friday or Saturday.
Vi ho’s duty is it to attend to the try
ing of a person for lunacy*? There is
a party in Resaca said to be crazy that
should be attended to by somebody, for
he a disturbing the quietude of the
town. Is it not the Ordinary’s duty if
it be reported to him, to cause them to
be taken up ?
Playing drafts is the chief employ
ment of our boys now.
Berries and red bugs become more
plentiful ; especially the red bugs, judg
ing from the amount of scratching done
in Resaca,
I understand what wheat has been
threshed about here is making on an
average about seven bushels per acre.
Prof. Starr commences his school
again next Monday morning, I under
stand. It is hoped there will be less
annoyance to our citizens by the bad
conduct of some of the boys of his
school this session than last. I do not
blame the Professor, for I am told as a
general thing they chose a time when
he was away from the school as the
most opportune in which to use vulgar
language and commit disagreeable acts.
Our town looked deserted last Wed
nesday. Most of the boys went to At
lanta to hunt the fourth of July.—
Their looks showed they had found
plenty ol heat an l dust.
Thine forever,
Tom Thumb.
Craneater.
Craneater, July sth, 1877.
Dry and hot.
Wheat threshing is engaging the par
ticular attention of farmers just iuw,
with some satisfactory results.
The health of this community is re
ported by physicians to be at preset un
exceptional. Good water, good buttei~
milk, plenty of physical activity and a
cheerfulness among the people which
drives away thoughts of the hard times
are causes to - which this desirable state
is partially attributable.
There is to be a Sunday School cel
ebration at Craneater Springs on or
about the 10th of August, which prom
ises to be a very enjoyable affair. Come
out and we can promise you safely, I
think, a good time on that occasion.
Some unknown thief or thieves en"
tcred the store of our popular young
merchant, Mr, J. W. MoSpadden, dur
ing the latter part of the night of the
4th, and made his escape with about
twenty pounds of tobacco and other
goods to the amount of twenty-five or
thirty dollars. A dil’gent look out is
being kept and I think the guilty will
be overhauled. ‘ W. * * *

“WON’T 60 TO FLORIDA.”
New York, August 30,1872.
DR.TUTT:
bear Sir When in Aiken, fast winter, I ffsed yoff#
Expectorant for my cough, and realized more benefit
frebi it than anyfa'ing I over to<#k.- I am so well that
I will not go to Florida next winter as I intended.
Send iho one dozen bottles, by express, for some
friends. ALFRED CUSHING,

boston, January 11,1874.
This certifies that I have recommended tho use of
Dr. Tutt’s Expectorant for diseases of the lungs
for the past two years, and to my knowledge many
bottles have been used by my patients with tho hap
piest results. In two cases where it was thought con
firmed consumption had taken place the Expectorant
effected a cure. R. H. BFRAGUE, M.D.
“Wc eon not speak too highly of Dr. Tutt’s Ex
pectorant, and for the sake of suffering humanity
hope it may becomo more generally known.’—Chris*
