QUmjca. towii ANb County affairs. Farmers ar& pulling fodder. Merchants are “tilling up.” See looal notioe of B. M. &C. C. llarlan. Calhoun still has an over-supply of i bachelors. \ The dreamy haze of autumn begins to overshadow us. The boys can lay off their stiiped socks. They are no longer the fash* ion. The clouds opened on Tuesday and Wednesday and gladdened the earth with a steady and greatly benefioial rain. Potatoes, turnips, eto , will now begin to grow off, and late corn will aU so be aided wonderfully from its effects. Among our visitors during coprt we have notioed in town this week Mr. D. 11. Findley, of Romo, Mr. Whit man, of the Dalton Citizen, and Mr. Walker, of Ringgold, late of Catoosa Courier. Capt. W. V. Findley is now a citi zen of Calhoun, having given up the superintendency of Ex Gov. Joseph E. Brown’s extensive farm, and moved his family to town. Charles and Elisha, the Governor’s sons, succeed him. Court opened on Monday, Judge Un derwood, of the Rome Circuit, presi ding. His charge to the jury was for oible and lull of wisdom. The busi. ness of Court has been rapidly dis posed of this week, showing the adapt abilities of the Judge to his position, a long experience continually made good use of having made him one of tho beat officers in the State. It is with pleasure wc announce that Col. Warren Akin, of Cartersville, in response to a request from some of our most prominent citizens, will deliver an address at this place next Tuesday, on the adoption of the new Constitution. Col. Akin, it will bo remembered, ad* dressed the poople of Gordon in the spring advocating the holding of the convention. His address, we feel as sured, will be something well worthy of being heard by our citizens. On a certain occasion recently, which was none other than tho assembling of a rural singing Convention, a starchy young gentleman of Resaca made him self particularly agreeable to one of tho young ladies attending. The boys say lie did his level best to make an im pression upon her, bestowing numberless little courtesies upon her daring tho en tire day, which being rather unusual, raised the curiosity of his friends, and he was ao object of considerable intei-. est among the other young men. How fir he succeeded in his efforts in that direction can only remain a matter of conjecture with the boys, but to render him a further victim of their teasiug, (he being very timid) when ready to leave the ground he unconsciously put liitnseir a-straddle of another fellow’s mule and prepared to move off. The fellow being apprized of the situation called to him to dismount, which he quickly did, and now swears by all that h good and bad he will uervor attend a mus'.cal convention again. The growth of a town is simply tho aggregated improvement of its individ ual members. If every citizen would give the preference to tho people of his own town in his outlay, quite an addi tion might be made to the number of successful men in each neighborhood. Patronize yout own blacksmiths, carri age makers, mechanics, merchants and printers. Help each other along, cul tivate a pride in the progress and thrif ty appearance of your town ; cast out that selfish jea’ousy in a neighbor’s prosperity. There is sufficient compe tition in every calling to keep prices as low as can be afforded, and in nothing oan the people oxercise a more benign influence than in the encouragement of a brotherhood trade and patronage. It is the mutual interest of all to have the laigest possible number of busy, prosperous men in each commu mtjr. A successful man soon shows his 5 success in his surroundings ; he paints His house, erects new fences, sets out shade trees, improves his land, every item of which change necessitates out lay of money and labor. These im provements not only benefit the fortu nate projector, but add to the charac ter and appearance of the whole neigh borhood, attract tho attention and ad. miration of every stranger who enters the place, induce new families to move into town, and, best of all stimulate the neighborhood to a rivalry in the same line of improving their surroundings. Bet every person determine, for the coming year, to patronize his neighbors, an, l watch the good effects on the whole community. Rev. John P. Duncan preaehed his last sermon for our people last Sunday night. Laborer's Union. On last Saturday night the laborers in the vicinity of Reeves’ Station, ac tuated by what they concede to bo an unjust effort on the part of owners of lands to allow them too small a share of their crops as tenants, and of farm hands exact an unreasonable amount of work for an uuremunerative price, met and organized a Laborer’s Union.— There were about seventy present. The following as a declaration of principles was adopted, and have teen handed us for publication : Whereas, Many land holders of Gor don county have united in agreement to demand of tenants higher rents thaD have been customary in the past, aud of laborers for hire more work for less per diem, or wages, than is consistent with the necessities or requirements of families, thereby creating dissatisfaction, disorganizing labor and enslaving, or tending to enslave the helpless, amass ing wealth at tho expense ef humarr suffering ; and whereas, there is mani fest disposition to further encroach up on tho necessities of honest labor and enthrall the poor, the undersigned therefore do interchangeably and mu tually pledge themselves to stand by and abide the following declaration of rights and principles, to-wit: Ist. We demand remuneration for services as laborers, and such propor tion of crops raised as tenants or rent ers commensurate with the honest dis.. charge of the respective duties as such, aud the demands of our families. 2d. Recognizing the rights of capi tal and of landlords to secure labor as cheaply as they can, we protest against the illiberal determination of those who have resolved, by their extortionate de mands, to put an honest subsistence be yond tho reach of many of the poor of our country. 3d. We hereby solemnly warn those who havo virtually stamped the seal of their avarice and wanton disregard of the poor man's rights upon tho already impoverished masses, that they can, and will likely overreach their own interests aud drive the laboring men from a com munity to which they confess attach ment, and become dependent upon the unsettled labor of tramps or irresponsi ble parties to tho injury of all interests aud the impoverishment of all classes; that we cannot afford, and will not en gage to rent lands at a less proportion ate share of interest in the crops raised than l as been customary, or on terms totally inadequate to tho necessities of our families. “The Lost Cause.” —A magnifi cent picture 14x18 inches in size rep resents a Confederate soldier after the War returning to his home, which he finds lonely and desolate. In front of the ruined cottage are two graves with rude crosses, on one of which some friendly hand has hung a garland. To the right the calm ..river and, rising moon indicate peace and rest. The stars, seen through the trees, represent the Southern Cross. It is a picture that will touch every Southern heart, and should find a place in every South ern home. J. ftiKEH, Ordinary. aug4-30d On meeting a friend the first inquiry is always regarding his health. ' Why? Because health is of the first ation ; yet many will sit in a cold, damp theatre, regardless of weak lungs and hacking cough. Discard some of the ephemeral pleasures of the dav, such a3 theatre-going, cigar-smoking, &c.. and | invest your small change in something that will be a lasting benefit. For in stance, Cousscns’ Compound Honey of Tar costs only 50 cents, and will cure your Cough, Cold, and all diseases of the Throat and Lungs. Try it. The following note was picked up on the street yesterday, and can be had by calling at this office : Dear Josii : please come home.— We need you very much, a3 several sad accidents havo befallen us.
