SlmM* TOWN and county affairs. > T oW zelect your Christmas presents. K tow ah Bill went up the Oostanaula nd Coosawattee this week. When a Gordon county girl accepts * lover she saya : “ Bein’ as it’s you, 9f 1* a We have a cut and 4 dried puff, with poetry flung in, laid up for the one who v ill open their soul and send us a Chrst mag turkey. Don’t all speak at once A quilting party and a dance took place at|tbe residence of Dr." King in ibe country one day this week, and the young people had a good deal of fun. Mr. Mark A Moore desirea us to •Ute that he is no longer a candidate far Representative. His retiring from the raee w in the interest of no per .oo, combination or ring, and he de le's to thank his friends for the en • .uragement he has received. Col. J C. Fain, candidate for the State Senate, will address the people uf Gordon county on the political issues of the day at the Coort House on next Tuesday We hope a good crowd will turn out to hear him express his views before them. Gen. P. M. B. Young ind others will al3o address our citizens upon the question of the location of ♦he Capital. We were among a fortunate number of persons invi'ed to partake ot a Thanksgiving dinner at the Calhoun 11 -tel on Thursday, and the occasion will linger long in our memory as one in which we were amply distinguished, a, having ably done our duty. The and aaectcd psi tides of a fat tu.key gob" bier nerved for the table in the most superb manner were ioo much of s temptation for the human mind to en terUin a single idea of refusal when the de*cr host asked us to be present.— The feast was a fine one,and we wish Mr Atkin and his popular houac continued JUCC E. It is a credit even to a live town like CdUonn to have in it such enterprising mercantile houses as that of Foster & Harlan. Their long experience io bus iness has enabled them to comprehend the wans of this section, and they strive cons uu 'y and assiduously to meet tlo-se wants. Their stock always contains a cii rice variety of goods, and .embraces everything there is a demand Tot, from a fine-tooth comb to a two hurse pli>w. They arc receiving luring this winter a good addition to their al •ready immense stock in the way of sea. rfonable goods in every line, to which nhey would respectfully call the atten tion of the public '1 heir business pluck justly merits * continuation of the large patronage they have received from cur pe pie. They are the most liberal patrons of their county paper, which is sufficient evidence that their btsiness judgment will do to rely upon. A negro, an escaped coovict from the Alabama penitentiary, made an attempt ta outrage the person of Mias Temple ton, a daughter of Roe John W. Tern pletOv, in Columbia, Teun., recently, and was lynched by a body of indigo jjant citizens on Tuesday last. The 4tor* of the affair is about as follows ; Miss Temple*on is in her nineteenth year, eery prjisy, and a general favor ite. About seven o’clock la t Saturday morning Mis Templeton had occision io go into the yprd When she was ■fifty jnr's from tne house she encountered the negro, who was skulk ing atuund. She asked him what bus* toes* he had -there. Without reply the negio sprang t her throat, chekad her severely, and forced her to the ground -A terrible struggle ensued, durirg which Mi.-ri j’emphton's cl.ihc-s were -oil), and her neck and other portions of’ her body bruised. For five or ten -iuinutes *he struggle the negro brandishing a knife above hei hend and '•threatening to cut her throat if she did fi'H yield Finally, finding his strength w as not sufficient to accomplish hia hell ih purp .se, he ceased, and threatened iher with, immediate death if she did mot swear not to betray hiui. Reliev ing it was the only way to save her life end honor, she consented, and be made hsr place her left hand on her heart, raise her right to heaven, and call on Rod as a witness tha' she would not tell on him. he then fled by th# back way. Miss Tempietoj returned *to the house. Family noticing her pal* *'w and nervousness, saw something was wrong and began to question h Deeming her pledge she hud given R‘>. per sacred and binding, she refused to tell, and it was fifteen or twenty min <i*ea before *he ould be persuaded to cweil all. Mr father finding his daughter had suffered uo material harm thodght at ffrst of keeping the matter Secret, hut, on mature deliberation, con* eluded to make it public. The news av.ted like a fire-brand. The Pub ic Square was almost crowded in jin hour after the alarm. Threats to lynch were made op all tides, and lhat leetbed the unanimous sentiment, and pquads of twenty to fifty men on horses were soon scouring the country in every direction. Roper had over an hour's start and made good use of it. An ef fort that day failed. The search wa renewed Sunday. A suspicious negro, was known to h ive passed through Prospect. The next heard was his capture at Athens Ala., sixty-two mile south by two gentlemen from Columbia. The negro was carried to the lady and identified. A rope thrown out of the Court House window was placed around his neck and his body was 9000 dang ling at the end of it. Mr. Templeton has relatives in thi county, and having resided here sever* years ago, is welTknowu to our citizen* as a pious, good man. Drawing to a Close, Ain’t it bully to contemplate, though ? How many hopes will have the daylight* knocked out next Wednesday. “Many Votera " will soon lay aside his pen on the musty rack, THE CANDIDATE will cease to meet you ready for au af fectionate grasp of the hand, and the health of your wife and chil-Irea will cease to be a matter of frequent inoui ry. The*buroing eloquence of THE STUMP SPEAKER will cease to flow unchecked out upon the November breeze*, while ye bo.tied drinks will no longer {L, r in free upon their shelves. THE FARMER can once more plod away across his fields and pursue his labors unannoyed by the peoetra ing eui’eaties of the the office hunter, while “ MY RECORD ” will cense to grate harshly upon his ears. THE WIDOWS AND ORPHANS need no longer lick sorghum ’lasses and eat roast ’tatets, for their wants are to be looked after. THE SNARLING CUR can no longer roam at large and feast unmolested upon the farmer s mutton, for a strenuous dog law will call for a general demolition. Let us have peace.
