gdU'ffMK town am cwntt affairs. gupenu* Court opens Monday. Tleoty of rain and enld weatber tbi* webk- Th<i Etowah Bill ha* been detained V p the river on account of oomt acci rftot befalling it. Married, on tbe 6th inat., at the res idence of David Siek, by Elder M. H. gander*, Mr. J. L. Bntton to Mis* J. Sik, all af Gordon county. Kleewhcre appear* the advertisement of Messrs. Ferguaon k Thayer, who have just opened anew greeery store at the old stand of H. K. Bicli. They hope to merit a liberal ibar* of tbe trade by offering to purebaeera superior bargains in their line. They hare marked goods down to bottom figure*, ard let the fact be known through their county paper that the people seeing may profit by it. We cheerfully com mend them to the public a* deserving a iberal patronage. As will he.seen by announcement in in our advertising eclumns, the Acade my will be under tbe management of Rev. J. B. Hitlhouse during 1878 Mr. Hillhouse is well known among our people as a cultured and refined gen* ileman, and no one eonld have been ehosen tbe seleetion of whom would have more certainly insured the success of that institution W* tru*t our peu pi* will extend to him that generous assistance *o much needed to keep up in our midst a first class school, and that tho'e who think of entering their children in an institution where they will enjoy superior facilities for advancement in learning will uohesita* tingly give our academy n trial. After the polities! turmoil of the past month or in, we feel, in making up tbe Inside of this week’s issue, like we might dive into the downmost reeesse g of our country's fluctuating, cver-chun ging political characteristics, and draw up from beneath the immortal rubbish of the late struggle material yet to en* gaire the reader’s attention, but we won’t do it. The worry is over, and let disappointment give plaee to cheerful., mass, and everybody feel good. Christ mas is coming, the festal icnsan, with its many uierry features, will open soon. We feel good, and why shouldn’t we. We gave a gentle hint to our friends, last week, that this establishment would feci the better by tbe reception of a Christmas turkey, when, to our immense satisfaction, befor# the ink bad got dry on our paper a plump, healthy bird hopped right luto our sanctum, and is now the nucleus around which revolves our thoughts, and pardou us, gentle reader, for here remarking that news' pager m*u have always held that a cut froui (he forward part of a roast turk ey's carcass, smothered in gravy and surrounded by * pound • and a half of artificial intestines, is ad sh not in the least detrimental to health, and one which wo newspaper man evei hesitated to ta'kle when favorable opportunity offered itself. We now. in the mos earnest manner possible, desire to ex tend to the noble lady—Mr*. Col. W J. CantreM—who hae so kindly re membered the editor in this material manner our hearty thanks. Vcterson’s Magazine for January is the most superb number ever issued of tha* popular lady’s book. There are two steel engravings “Crpid in the Brin,” and “Borrowed Plumes,” the Utter a little “tot” of three years old dressed in Iter mother’s shawl and bon net, one of the prettiest pictures we have almost ever seen. Besides these, there is a double-sis* , Paris fashion plate elegantly colored, a picture io itself • and alio two very'beautiiul colored pat terns for working ornamental table cloths in cr< wel ; the latter an exnbetl t*bment alone as expensive as a chro o. In all there are about fifty engrav* ings in the number, counting the wood engravings. Th* stone* are all origin* 1 and by such writers as Mrs. Ann S. Stephens, Mrs. Frances Hodgson Bur nett, Mr*, li. {{aiding Davit, Frank Lae Benedict, “Josinh Allen's Wife,” that new and popular writer, a galaxy that no other lady can show. With this number appears, as a Supplement,* full site diagram pattern for a Coat Bodice f.*t a lady, the last thing in fashion.— 1 his alone is worth the price of the number.* “Peterson” claims to com bine more than any other monthly, be ing a uiagaiin? not oniv of hut of art and fashion alto. The price is astoniaingly low, vi* ; two dollars a year, postage paid. To olubs it is low er still, viz : five copies for SB.OO, or seven for $lO 50.with an extra copj for getting Up the club, all postage free.— Specimen* are sent gratis, to ge t ud olubs: , Everybody ought to take “Pe terson” for 1878. Col. Seed I’m ter a Dime. We advise all onr readers to forward their address and 10 cent* to Orange Judd Cos., 246 Broadway, New York ? who mak* a special offer to send for this tttn (half price and postage) the number for October Ist, of the Ameri can Agriculturist. This splendid num* her, besides over 50 engravings, eon. tains a great amount of useful, practi cal, reliable, seasonable information, not only for tbe farm and Garden, but for the household, children included. Most will get from it hints and suggestions worth ten nr twenty times it# cor.— Better still, to send $1.60 and receive the paper, post-paid, from now to tbe end of 1878—that is, all of volume 37, with the rest of this year free. (Two copies for $3.00). Nowhere else can one get o much Klly valuable, paying information for ao little money—not 3 cents a week, a sum easily saved or produced extra, which the paper will be sure to help one to do. This journal is prepared by practical men and wc* men, who know what they talk and write about from ae l -• enee and large obseva‘ion, and they can and d> greatly aid others to pmdwible planning and working. Many single bint* and suggestions each abundaiwy rep*y a year’s cost. The fea less explain eof quackery and Intro bo in every num ber, are invaluable, and have saved its readers and the coun . y millions of dollars. The depsuuents for the household and chi'drci are pleading and instructive. Every number of the paper is beauri ally illuslvated. In short, the American Agricultmist is full of good things, for every roan, wo man and child in city, village and coun. try. Take our advice, and send $1.60 for 14 months, or at Li nt send a dime for the half-price specimen now ofier ed, and see it for von selves. A Fine Microscope lor • low Canfa. A wJI oiade, genuine Microscope— n< t a bit of molded uless in a paper or metal i up, or tube—but one with triple Lenses, Diaphragm, Stand, clc., is not only useful in everv family, but is very interesting. Such insirumen'a have hitherto been too costly ior the general public. The editors of ihd American Agriculturist, io eono *e in with an Of tical Manulacturing Company., have after many ex eriuients and much in vention, succeeded in producing a gen uine Microscope, with three fine Lenses, Stand, ate., which, by use of machinery, and very largo manufacture, is now made at far less cost than has ever be* fore been d<ne. Scientific men, and Olliers, say it is decidedly superior to anything ever before offered so low as $2 50 ; but ibis one ia sdd for $1 50. But one ia given to every subscriber to tbe American Agriculturist, who siur ply adds 40 cents to the fegUfcTr sub scription price—that is, the paper is sent on* year, with the $1 5 I Micro scope, lor only s2.o*). If te be de'iv ered free to any p;rt of the country 15 cents extra is t> be added A Yuli description and ail particulars can be had by sending your address on a pos tal card to Orange Judd Company, New York ; or belter still, ■< nd them 10 ceuts (half-price) for a post-paid sample copy of the paper, which will give a full description of the Mitro eeope, and also touch valuable reading and engravings, etc., aod be richly worth far more than it* cost.
