The 8100 premium was taken by Col.
0. C. Duncan, of Perry, at tho lair
in Atlanta, in 1870, on this essay,
k The following system for tho culture
of c tton will do for all practical pur
poses and if ftllowed will generally
succeed in the cotton belt of the Souths
ern States.
Ist Let the ground be thoroughly
broken with a long narrow turning plow
where tho clay is near the surface let u
lung scooter plow be run in the fu row
following the turning plow. The land
sli utd be flroken by the Ist of March
and care taken nut to plow when too
wet.
2nd. About tho Ist oil May
mence preparing the land to plant as fol*
Run off the rows first with a fourteen
inch plow and in this furrow distribute
the fertilizers, and then form the beds
with a very narrow turning plow j this
plow should not be more than three inch
es wide
The distance between the rows must
be determined by the quality uf the
land, but the rows should under no cir
cumstances be le-s than b ( J inches
wide.
‘dd. About three days after the beds
arc formed commence planting.
And, if a planter is used run a board
over the beds and be careiul to com
mence planting within three days after
the formation of the beds.
4th As soon as a stand is secured
run u sweep on both sides of the cotton
and within a week ; fter tho pl<>wJ
have passed over, commence chopping
the cotti-n to a stand and be careiul to
bring the cotton to a stand the first chop
ping and leave no sprig of grass near the
root of toe stalk : follow this chopping
with in a week with a thorough plowing
aud after this work with the hoes and
* ing sweeps at least once every two
weeks until the same is laid by
sth. In conclusion I w uld say that
my experience leaches me that the great
point in making a crop is thoroughly
preparing the land for the seed ; and a
cotton crop is half made when properly
planted A strong plow team and fast
working will keep down tbe grass which
is after all the great enemy of the cot"
too plant, and causes more failures than
any other cause.
Jlloav to Better Farming.—A cor
respondent of tile Prairie Farmers gives
the following very sensible advice .
Rut the serious question : How shall
this system be commenced ?” This is
asked as well by the farmer who has
i.uliicieut money wherewith to improve
his farm, as by one whose daily labor
upon the farm only sufiices to earn bis
bread. It is aa difficult a problem for
tbe one as tor the other. \\ e find by
experience that in this process one most
needs “make haste slowly” if he looks
for profit and the closer be looks to
his own resources for materials instead
of unwisely spending his money for out*
side help or material, the more economi
cal will be his progress. It is also ncc„
essary that lal>>r or money shall be on*
ly expended in such a way that it ahull
tell in the shape oi profits. For instance
it is far more profitable to have a good
p g in a poor pen. so lung us it is suffi/
cient for proper shelter than to have a
poor pig iu a costly pen and tho same
with other stock and with their stables
and with crops and barus.
Tiie Western Rural says, ‘AY here
meat smoking is practiced on a large
scale, a house adapted for the purpose
should be erected. Avery good substi
tute is obtained by means of an empty
sugar hogshead. In the inside bottom
tix a sufficient number of hooks to sus
pend the hams. Get a quantity ol saw
dust, (oak is rest-,) lay it on the ground
in a circular form, so that it may be
covered by the hogshead. I urn up the
hogshead; so that the mouth is cu the
ground. Ilang up the hams upon the
hooks, set fire to the sawdust, and if the
draft of air is required prop up the side
of the hogshead about an inch with a
small stone. The sawdust will smould
er and the hams may be used as soon
a s smoked ” This method has been
followed in Pennsyieania for more than
50years, and answers very well wnen
the hams are few in number. — German **
