It is never profitable to cultivate poor land, and especially it is not profi table v to cultivate it with hired labor. — Let the owner of poor land, says the old Geoigfa Plantation, pay good wages to laborero working by the month or year, rnd 't will often happen that the entire crops ai.se and will not sell for enough to pay theirjwages. Results like these drive the c . ners of such unproductive soils to sol! ibi what they can get and remove to ft new country, where Iresh land may be had at a low price. Rut is there no way in which old fields, and naturally thin soils, may be greatly improved dlul, *t the same time, pay good wages fcr la bor. It is precisely at this point that science comes to assist the farmer where he most needs assistance to keep him bis wife and children, flit of their far-off wilder net.6. Science tells him that all agri cultural plants are formed of air and pure water, to a large extent ; and that 0 itnioon air and water are as useful for making crops on and over poor land, as on and over rich land. If every owner of f poor farm understood these tw important facts, the information would holp him wonderfully to supply the few lacking substances to make go.,d crops andan independent living on the old homestead An acre of earth, such as is cultiva ted with the plough, weighs a thousand tons ,if taken up to the debth ot ten inches. It ofteu happens that from three hundred pounds of agricultural salts applied to an acre ol poor land, add four, fold to the harvest. The salts con tains no vegetable mold, and nothing to make it; and the solid matter whicn they add to earth in which corn, cotton cr wheat grow is only one part to seven or eight thousand. The spring and summer heat and sunshine the rain and dew, and the atmospheric gases, over and in poor soils, are substantially the same that they, the ooean oi gases an vapors m which ail agricultural p ant grow, in f ruling said plants, vi 1 be cnrefully studied, and unniversall known. In manuring the ground at the bottom < f this vast ocean of air, in an unsaientifio manner, farmers thro.v away millions of dollars in U>or misapplied and impoverish a great (leal of land to ■ their ini ury, and the public oss. bound agricultural education will, one day. put an end to this error in farming.— Mobile Register The Western Hog Crop. Though full returns of the West’ rn hog produce for the past season are u<d yet iu. from all the minor points, the es timates now at hand will probably vary but little from the final total. Ve give these iu another column. The state meat includes the number of h )gs pack ed the average of weights and yield of lard ; also' the amount of mess pork made The total packing represents 4,805,300 hogs, as agan5t5,566,000 a decrease of about 700,009. The average weight for the season of IS/5-6 is placed 21799 pounds uet, as against 200<7 pounds last year, an increase of 8 | pounds noi or nearly four per cent. The averag* yield ot lard is 34.55 pounds per hog against 35.20 last year- 1. ho total yield of lard shows a falling off ol 20,500.000 pounds, or about 54,800 tierces, es com pared with 1875. The aggregate net weight of hogs wi'l fall about 100,000 OOlfpoands below that of last year, a de crease of about nine per cent. JS'cic York Tribune. _— Tlie Continued Extort of Cot* ton Goods. — It is a fact not generally known that the British drills, jeans and sheeting imported now are all stamped with American brands and the names of leading American mills. Respecting the export of cotton goods to England the movement continues with consider abl<s success. The number of packag e shipped from'* New York and Bostnh since January Ist amount to nearly 18 000 packages, against 10,000 package* during the same period, iu 1875 It i*. admitted that there is notT much rrofi in the movement, but it has a tendency t > rid the country of a portion of th surplus cotton, beside giving employ ment to thousands of hands, though at a reduced rate of wages.
