ROTES FROM REW YORK. Heath of A. T. Stewart—Ameri can Industry—The Revival— The Presidential Outlook— IFramatic Rotes. [From a Times Correspondent.] New York, April 12th, 187 G. The sudden death of Mr. A. T. Stew art,the Dry Goods King,of inflammation of the bladder on the afternoon of the 10th inst, at the ripe age of 73 years' has cast a gloom over the commercial world. Born near Belfast, Ireland, he came to this oountry over fi'ty years ago, and engaging in mercantile pur* suits, by untiring energy, snppiemented by honorable dealing, prospered as it does not often fall to th ‘ lot of man to prosper. His retail dry goods store occupying an entire block on Broadway,is the larg est establishment of the kind in the vworld. It is eight stories in height the foundation, and each floor has au area of over two acres, altogether ,innootjng to over eighteen acres under .one roof. Neither London nor Baris can boast anything approaching it in .W'Zi and magnificence. Upwards of 2.U00 cleiks are required to conduct this • branch of the business alone. Though the bulk of his fortune came from his dry goods business which was immensely romunerave, the sales at re tail and wholesale amounting it is said ,t s in thing over 40,000,000, annually, 1 ; tins were greatly augmented by ute imvefctjjjent in real estate. .trie! dkveipluwian, exacting from . iigi ptriuKmane*! of their duties, | - e. me ,undeservedly, <he reputation ' '>•• cuiplupees of <be,igg Jiard " ! * evcr demonstrative or osten.- bestowal of iiia charities, ‘ l - 1 ’ Se away large .umsruru. ally where he knew it would do good. Mr. Stewart was a liberal patron of the fine arts, not hesitating, when a pic ture had merit, to pay even as high as $75,000 for it, as was the 1 e.<e with one of his latest purchas-s— * The charge of the Cuirassiers,” by Mewsonier.— His gallery contains, besides, many oth er famous and costly paintings by the geeat masters. As Mi. Stewart leaves no children and has no blood relations, it is a query what provision be has made for dispo" sing of his colossal possessions amount ing it is thought, to at least $50,000.- 000. It is probablo that he made arrange* ments before his death for the continu ance of his vast business, as he was too far sighted to neglect a matter of such vital importance to the well-being of his army of emi loyees. PROGRESS OF AMERICAN MANUFAC TURES. The rapid strides made bv the pro ducts uf American industry in the past decade are st°rtling to oue not conver sant with the march of events. It been a popular notion that no man a Pas tures in this country could successfully compete with the cheap labor of Eng land and the Continent. Y r et for a long time European countries have depended on our work-shops for the best agricul tural tools and implements, and now cutlery is sent to Sheffield, the head/ quarters of the world heretofore for this clasA of merchandise. Silver plated ware of our manufacture is preferred all over Europe to their home produc tions. Prints rr calicoes of late have been extensively and successfully ship ped to Englaud, where they take prece dence over similar products of the British looms, and by the recent heavy shipment to Lon lon of patterns of la dies’ and children's garments by Mad ame Demorest, of New York, we find American fashions and patterns prefer red in Londoa ti any other. THE PR ESI DENTAL OUTLOOK. The Presidential atmosphere is still murky. Only shifting shadows, bearing the familliar outlines of noted aspirants, are yet discernable. No form on either side r tands boldly out. possess ing qualities that can command a nomi nation. In a general way, it may be said that the prevailing sentiment here among Republicans is in favor of Blaine, though Bristow is liable to develop, un der certain curcumstanccs, a good deal of latent strength. On the Democratic s'de, Gov. Tilden stands out conspicous ly as the choice of the party in New \ork, and it is qu'te probable, in the lii'ht of present events, that the New York delegation in the convention will go solid for Tilden. With respect to other States, however, Tilden relapses into the mist of uncertainty, which seems to envelope the candidates of both parties alike. There is a feeling that some unknown candidate may come forward, on either side, and pluek the prize for which so many are contends ing. THE REVIVAL work at the Hippodrome rjoes bravely on, and with no apparent diminution of interest. The inquiry rooms ?re daily and nightly thronged wit \ a serious and thoughtful crowd, in whose breasts the burning words of Mr. Moody have awa kened anxiety with regard to their fu ture condition. It is by personal effort in the inquiry far more than by his sermons, thit Mr. Moody's influence is felt His sermons prepare the soil and sow the seed, which afterwards germinates and bears fruit in the inquiry rooms, where tne harvest of converts is gathered in by the earnest efforts of Mr. Moody and his o-la’oorers who work under his training and direction That he is an adept in placing upon the chords of the human heart there can be no doubt, ae shown by his success in inducing men to abandon tl eir evil courses and give themselves up to the cause of Christ and the salvation of their souls. DRAMATIC NOTES. Mr. Augustin Daly, the ab’e and energetic manager of the Fifth Avenue Theatre, is in trouble about the play en titled Pique/’ which is having such a remarkable run at his theatre. Some rash critic having charged that “Pique,” was a plagiarism trout a play written by a Mrs Gilbert, Mr. Daly went for him in the courts laying his damages at a round figure. The matter is yet unde-, cided, but the public is disposed to judge leniently a man having so much talent for amusing them as Mr. Duly possesses. Laertes. WITH ATTACHMENTS For All Kinds of Work, is f:.t winning favor in the household, as shown by the rapidly increasing sales. This New Family Machine is capa-. ’ ble of_a range and variety of wort such as was once thought impossible to perform by 1 machinery. We claim and can show that it is the cbeape t, most beautiful, delicately arranged, nicely a Ijusted, easily operated, aril smoothly running of all the family sowing machines. it is remarkable, not only fo.* the range and variety of its sew ing, also for the variety and different kinds of texture widen it will sew with equei facility and perfection, using silk twist, linen, or cotton thread, fine or coarse, making the inter elastic lock stitch, alike on both sides of the fabric sewn. Thus, beaver cloth, or leather, may be sewn with great strength atul uniformity of stitch , and, in u moment, this willing and never wearying inst ilment may be adjusted for fine work on gauze or gossamer tissue, or the tucking of tarlatan, or ruffling, or al most any other work which delicate fingers have been known to perform. Ours having long been t he popular and practical machines for manufacturing pur poses, some dealers, using “the tricks of trade,” take advantage of this in trying to persuade purchasers that our Family Ma chine is not equal, foi* family sew ing to our Manufacturing Machines for manufacturing purposes. But purchasers—and they are apt to exandne carefully before choosing— have not been merely persuaded, but con vinced that our new family " achine embod ies new and essential principles—simplicity of construction ; ease of operation ; uni formity of precise action at any speed; ca pacity for range and variety of work, fine or coarse-leaving till rivals beidud it. Sewing Machine Sales of 1874. The table of sewing machine sales for 1874 show that our sales for that year amounted to 211,697 machines, being a larg-a increase over the sales of the previ ous year. The table shows that our sales < xceed those of any other company for the period named, by the number of 148,8, 2 machines, nearly Th ree Ttmes Those of any other Com pany. It may be further stated that the sales of 1873, as compared with the sale of 1872, ! show a relatively l arge incrcaai beyond the sales ot other maker**. For instance, in 1872 we sold 45.000 more machines than any other company ; whereas, in 1873, the sales were 113,254 Machines in Excess of Our Highest Competitor. And in 1974 our sales weie 1-48,8752 Macfiincs Tluxn Any O her Company. OFFICIAL REPORT.
