Slick to Your Farm.
The life of a farmer is not an
one, bat when he looks around and seis
the wrecks of fortune made on every
hadnd by men engaging in other pursuits
tho farmer has cause to bo thankful if
he can support his family and give his
children a common education. It has
heen stated that during the last hulf
century only four merchants in the city
of New York, out of every hundred
have succeeded in making their busi.
ness profitable. The unsuccessful ones
have managed, in many cases, to contio
ne in business for years after they have
had became bankrupt according to their
b volts; but of o >urse, dually had to sue*
cu ub their fate. These men while
living in good luxuriously have carried
oontinualiy load of care that no farmer
ever experience ; and when the time
came that their business must bo wouud
up, their condition generally has been
one of poverty, and utterly broken down
in spirits. A few recover and resume
busiaesa again j but the majority are
poshed aside to make room for others
eventually to follow in their footsteps
and end their fives in misery and des
pair.
Farmers, be contented. You may
not bo able to lay up money ; but if you
can pay your farms and live comfor
tably, envy not tho condition of
those engaged in other pursuits. To
fanners who are out of debt and own
good farms, need I say that the appar
ently wealthy baokees of Wall street
might well envy your lot. Nearly every
week some of these firms owning miL
lions of dollars explodes and
its members sink into poverty and ob
neurity; but iho farmer who is out of
debt owns a bank that can never fail,
inasmuch seedtime and harvest and
potnised unto the end of time.
Tdk Weeds. —Don't burn the weeds
if you have a weedy piece of ground to
break. By burning them you can gain
nothing, for they have already ahed
their seeds, and sain seed are already in
the ground entirely beyond the reach of
file. So the best thing you can do is
to turn under|the weeds, if possible, the
•oil needs every one of them, no matter
wow rich it may be naturailv. We
know the ground would break muoh
nioer with the weeds away, but no mat*
ter —do the best vou can with them—
never think of burning them. If they
are so thick that you cannot turn them
under,it will pay you to run among them
with a harrow, tearing them loose, and
to follow the harrow with a rake throw
ing them into compact piles to tot foi
spreading over tho ground at Same
future time. No, don’t burn the
weeds.
Cement. —One of tho beßt cements
for crockery is to mix lime with the
white of an egg. To uso it take a suffi
cient quantity of the egg to mend one
article at a time. Shave off a quantity
of lime and mix thoroughly. Apply
quickly to the edges and firmly togeths
or when it soon sets and becomes stroDg.
Calcined plastej ot Paris will answer in
the place of the lime.

To Cure a Scald.—Tako the surper

together to the consistency of a salve ;
apply over the part affected and if any
portion becomes dry, patch it with the
