CALHOUN TIMEg local news. Our Centennial letter is considered n popular feature by our readers. Rev. Mr. Cramer Episcopal, preached at the M. E. Church Sunday and Sunday night. Caliioun is still improving in spite of the hard times. Our citizens seem to be doing all they can to add to the attractiveness and importance of the town in this way. The storm Monday proved a blessing to Calhoun in its act of demolishing that Centennial eye-sore, the old livery stable situated west of the railroad on Court House street. Last Sunday two youths, about tho ages of nine and twelve, passed through Calhoun afoot, inquiring the nearest route to the North Carolina line. They had apparently been traveling several days, and proceeded on their lengthy journey with cheerfulness,as if accustom ed to pedestrian exercises. NOTICE! NOTICE!! All persons indebted to me, either byuotffor account, and failing to pay the same by the 20th of tho present month, will find COST added thereto unless some special arrangement is made. I am in earnest, if you believo uie, come aud pay, if you don’t, wait and see. T. M. Ellis. j uly 5-2 t Some of our side walks are in a bad condition, persimmon sprouts and dog fennel being allowed to grow rank and render them rather objectionable to those whose daily walks lie over them. Now let our eouucilmen stir up their fourth of July patriotism and wage war on the dog fennel and persimmon bushes. On Monday evening the clouds grew angry, and a terrific wind swept threat eningly over this vhinity, accompanied by heavy rain, lightning and hail. Corn has been blown down aud injured around ibis place, and we fear greater damages may come to our knowledge after going to press, as the heaviest part of the storm seems to have missed Calhoun an 1 passed below. Well here, now, wo have let the centennial fourth of July slip by without celebrating her. Lot cverybodv get their p"p-guns ready for the two bun 0 died and onctli anniversary of Tom Jef ferson's independence document, tho sumo which occurs iu the year 1077, and give a glorious blow cut. r l hink of this an be ready, 'Rah for tlie-fourth of J u!y. Mr. Geo. W. N rman, traveling agent for the Augusta Chronicle & Sen tinel, called to seo us ou Monday. Mr. Norman is canvassing this end of the State for subscribers and we are pleased t > leave has been successful. The Ulirui. iele & Sentinel is, wc believe the oldest paper in Ge< lgia, is ably edited, full of news, and reliable, and in tho political campaign will boa valuable acquisition to any household. The public debate, on Tuesday night was well attended and liugelj enjoyed by all prosent. The question, “Should the Elective Franchise be extended to white females V* was ably discussed by Col. E. J. Kikcr and J. S. Hillhousc on tbe affirmative, and Col. Tom Skelly and James A. Gray on the negative. The Committee, consisting of two ladies and three gentlemen, decided the question in favor of the negative. We learn with regret that Prof. W. 13. Shaw has tendered to the trustees Lis resignation as principal of our acad* emy. Professor Shaw had the very kindest of feelings and good opinion of the present patrons of the school, and that institution will feel his loss no little. Mrs. Fields will continue the school through the opening session,we presume, and will devote her energies to its best interests and give that satisfaction fur which her capacities befit her. The wheat crop of this county has proven an entire failure. Definitely we learn that the fewest number have made even ns much as a half a crop, while many large fields have been too worth less to harvest. Tho wheat to be mar keted is of a very inferior quality. With corn a different result is contemplated. The seasons have been wet, which gives fear of a drought , but if this does not come the corn crop of this county will be the finest produced in a number of years. The condition of cotton, so far as we can learn gives no cause for com plaint. The proceedings of the Democratic meeting last Tuesday reached us too late fur comment last week. The meeting was attended by the most influential cit izens from every portion of the county, a >d harmony seemed to characterize the action of the day. The perfect restora tion of unanimity among the Democrat c y of tho county was strongly urged and li that the full sense of tho pco- 1 pie should prevail in the selection of del ‘ to Atlauta, it was deemed the least objectionable manner to remand the election ot delegates back to the districts —that in primary meetings next Saturday, select delegates to a county convention at Calhoun on the 17th. Wc urged the peoplo to be ready for action on tho fourth of July, and it now more important that they should look after their interest ia the district prim aries. Pick men who are true blue and send no others to speak for you. If you desire Colquitt for Governor see that you vote for a Colquitt man to represent you, and if for James, Johnson or liar/ deman, be vigilant the same. No man has a right to complain at evils resulting from his own negligence. Attend the primaries, and mind you are not swoggled by political shysters. CoiuiumiicatcMl. Editor Times: We beg space in your valuable columns to suggest to the voters of our couDty the name of Ches ter 11. liarrett as the proper gentleman in our opinion to represent Gordon in tho ensuing Legislature. Mr. Barrett has never sought in any manner to in* troduce his name before the peoplo as an aspirant for office; nor has he inti mated to us a desire to servo tnc people in this capacity. Yet we take the liber ty of inseiting his name and believo if the people of Gordon will express them solves in his support they can never re grot a step judiciously taken. That Mr. Barrett will subserve tho interests of the people as faithfully and satisfactorily as any man, thero can be io doubt. There cannot be the loust doubt that ho is as little objectionable to all, aud there is no doubt that none have a superior claim upon the people's suffrage wc need not question, as his father, the late Judge D. B. Barrett rendered our people many noble deeds of service in the good old ante helium days Mr. Barrett belongs to no political ring nor is he familiar with the political trickery of corrupt politicians but is one of the people iden tified with tho people and would carry tho banner in triumph at the approach ing election. Noble, honest and true old Gordon would honor herself by hon oring him. Let the people nominate and elect him, and they will never re gret it. Many Voters. Ail Historiacl Fact. Won’t Regard it as a Catch-pen ii}’. Bradfields Female Regulator —Wc have often rend in the newspaper of’ the grand success of medical come pounds put up at the North and else where. Many of those medicines hav had their day, and we hear no more of them. Their proprietors have made fortunes, not so much from the cura tive powers and virtues of their mix tures, as from the notoriety given them by advertising, by which people were made to believe all the good that was said of them. A prcpcration is now popular and is known, as Bradfield’s Fe male Regulator, put up by L. 11. Rrad field, of Atlanta, Ga., at $1.50 per bob tic. Such is its curative virtunes, that it has gained wide-spread popularity all over the country where if has been knowm and it is being introduced every where. We arc informed that immense quantities of this medicine are being sold in all sections of to South and South-west especially in the city of New Orleans and in Texas. Considering the number and variety of poisonous reptiles aod insects aboun ding almost everywhere in the United States, it is not surprising that eases of death resulting from their bites are frequently reoorded in the public press. But it does seem strango that in this land of knowledge, people should through ignorance give themselves up to die after being bitten, when a cure can be speedily effected in the worst by timely use of that simple remedy, the Seven Seals or Golden Wonder.— The proprietors of this great medicine have a large number of certificates in their possession, attesting the most wonderful cures of bites of venomous reptiles The Seven Seals has been found equally efficacious whon applied to bee stings, which as is well known often times prove fatal to the sufferer. Aches and pains of every description, whether acuce or ebrouie, are almost instantly relieved by the application of the Sev en Seals to the parts affected.
