CALHOUN TIM ES LOCAL NEWS. Moonlight and balmy breezes. A favoiiiTE air with the ladies— “ Sweet buy and buy.” The lioppergrass cheweth up the corn and looketh around for somethin^ more. Mr. John Boyd was married in Dalton last week to Miss Ora Barrett— both of this county. We wish them much joy, happiness and { rosperity. John Kiker is taking down testimo ny at Cartersville Court this week, hav ing at last been able to leave the boy. See prospectus of thb Atlanta Com monwealth in this issue. The Com monwealth is a splendid paper well edi ted, and contains valuable and interest® ing reading. Asa campaign paper it is lively. We learn with regret that our young friend Dow Wyatt, who has been suffer i g from an attack of typhoid fever, is no better. His physician Dr. Malone, has given him every attention and en tertains hopes that he will be convales cent in a few days. Mr. Geohoe King, a nephew of Dr. C. King, and brothei of Mrs. J. A. Taliaferro, of this county, died last Saturday morning of chronic dysentery. Mr. King had been living in Haralson county, where he had hoped the free stone water would restore him to health, but finding his constitution rapidly giv" ing way, he was brought to this county, at his request and placed under the cate of his relatives. He was buried with Masonic honors beside his parents on Mr. Taliaferro’s place, on Sunday. The boys have organized a base club and have resurrected the name of the old Chcrokees who won laurels a few years back. There are a great many old fogies who are opposed to the boys’ base ball notions, but we believe there is much in the national game to develop their physical capacities, nev ertheless. The club, though composed mostly of inexperienced players, has re ceivcd a challenge from the Crawford club of Daltou, which they propose to accept. The game is to be played, we understand, on the 25th instaut, in Cal houn. Where raiu has been plentiful in our county, corn continues to look well, though in portions of the county the farmers have been without a shower for six weeks. In such localities corn, is begincing to suffer same. The gen eral crop, however, should good seasons favor from this on, will be very gcod. Cotton h'as been set back by the dry weather also in some parts of the coun ty. The continued rains a few weeks back caused the squares to shed a grea 1 deal, and our farmers do uot expect a full crop. Just before going to press we are fa vored with some intelligence from the movements of the grasshoppers. In this and the uppor portion of the coun ty they have done no serious damage and aie creating no alarm. In Oothca loga valley, however, they are threaten.- ing lively destructi n. They attacked the corn on Mr. Pres. Dyer’s place the other day and have left about four acres in a ruined condition. He drove them out of his corn field and they have since been in his cotton, stripping it to the stalk as they went. Ilis hands are engaged in destroying them with brush, and he thinks he will be able to prevent fur ther damage. Our informant says he saw where they had eaten the leaves from cherry and walnut trees and where they went through a clover field it had the appearance of an old sage field that had been burned off In the upper edge of Bartow they have become tired fight ing them, but are determined to whip them out if possible. Appeared July 30th * Retrenchment, A careful statement prepared by Mr* Springer, of llliuois, appearing in the Congressional Record, gives the esti, mates for each appropriation bill, the amount appropriated by the House for the fiscal yea" ending June 30, 1877, the reductions made in each bill below the estimates an l the reductions made by the House below the amounts appro priated for the year ending June 30, 1870. The total reduction be’ow the estimates of the departments are $64,' 362,116,90. The total reductions of appropriations made below the last fiscal year are $28,516,312,02. This last to tal may be reduced three or four mil* lions by the Conference reports, but the grand total of actual saving to the treasury by the Democratic House will reach full thirty-five millions of dollars, while the amount appropriated is sixty millions of dollars less than was asked for by the Republican administration. THE KEW FAMILY SINGER Sewing Machine. i * WITH ATTACHMENTS Por All Kinds of Work. is fast winning favor in the household, a s shown by the rapidly increasing sales. This New Family Machine is capa ble of a range and variety of work such a was once thought impossible to perform by machinery. We claim and can show that it is the cheapest, most beautiful, delicately arranged, nicely adjusted, easily operated, and smoothly running of all the family sewing machines. It is remarkable, not only for the range and variety of its sew ing, but also for the variety and different kinds of texture whicn it will sew with equal facility and perfection, using silk twist, linen, or cotton thread, fine or coarse, making the inter-elastic lock stitch, alike on both sides of the fabric sewn. Thus, beaver cloth, or leather, may be sewn with great strength and uniformity of stitch , and,t n a moment, this willing and never wearying instrument may be adjusted fur fine work on gauze or gossamer tissue, or motuckingi of tarlatan, or ruffling, or al most any other work which delicate fingers have been known to perform. Ours having long been the popular and practical machines for manuf i during pur poses, some dealers, using “ the tricks of trade,” take advantage of this in trying to persuade purchasers that our Family. M achine is not equal, for family sewing to our Manufacturing Machines for manufacturing purposes. But purchasers—and they are apt to examine carefully before choosing— have not been merely persuaded, but con vinced that our new family machine embod ies new and essential principles—simplicity of construction ; ease of operation ; uni formity of precise action at any speed ; ca pacity ferriage and variety of work, tine or coarse—learing all rivals behind it. Sewing Machine Sales of 187<# The table of sewing machine sales for 1874 show that our sales for that year amounted to 211,097 machines, being a large increase over the sales of the previ ous year. The table shows that our sales exceed those of any other company' for the period named, by the number of 148,8-52 machines, nearly Th ree Times Those of any other Com pany. It may be further stated that the sales of 1878, as compared with the sale of 1872, show a relatively large increas< beyond the sales of other makers. For instance, in 1872 we sold 45,000 more machines than any other company ; whereas, in 1873, the sales were 113,254 Machines in Excess of Our Highest Competitor. And in 1974 our sales were 1-48,852 Machines More Than Any Other Company. OFFICIAL REPORT. The following is a correct report of the sales of sewing machines made by the lead ing companies during the past four years. A careful examination of the figures will show that the “SINGER” have largely in creased each year, while, on the contrary, a corresponding decrease is shown in the sales reported by all other companies. This is a highly satisfactory result to us, and is only another proof that “merit always has its re ward.” Sewing Machine Sales for 1874. Machines sold.
