Farm Matl ers. One JHos-se Farm. The (rue path that leads to private arid pubiie welfare,-end that will lead us cut of the slough of despondency into t' e delectable land of independence l illustrated in the following descrip tion of u “one horse” farm and its op erations last season, as furnished by a farmer living in Bislfopviile, S. C., who is the happy owner of this model farm. All the plowing was done by his buggy horse, tbo time so used avenging nvo days in the week. The results are as follows: Thirteen acres were planted in corn and peas, ar.d Ecven in cotton. All the v rk of cultivation was done with day i dor at ; y cent- a day without meals, except fur plowmen a part of tho time. The cost of preparing and cultivating the cin and peas was $13.75. The cotton seed and commercial manures ost 8100.50, and the cost of gathering /as sl3, a total expense of $127.25. — hand produced 259 b ushoL of corn, 3,- 000 pounds of fodder and 30 bushels of peas, valued at $3lO. The net profits were s 182.75. The expense of matt ing the cotton and preparing the cotton fr market including $213 for manures, was $201.4-1 a:.d * the proceeds of the seven bales produced amounted to 8375.- 85. The not profits on the cotton was $174 10, which added to the profits on the other crops, gives a total net profit <f ; 357 15. The cotton costs seven ■ -Cits a pound to produce it, and six hales sold for twelve cents, and one bale i r seven and a half net per pound This Is the true road out of the wil derness of ruin in which the Irte war involved the Southern States. Tobacco. Almost all who use tobacco for any length of time regret that they have found this habit, so injurious to them ethers for various ostensible reasons, jus tifv its use. Th 3 use of aid mt spirits, bad as it is, caonot le more demoralizing than the usj of tobacco. It stupefies the moral powers. This is the great r ason why so few people are afiectcd . v preaching ; and it may also nc" con.tit for the numerous apostacies roi, the Christian faith at the presen J-) v Tobacco, by its peculiar specific prop erty oi benumbing the moral powers, is thfi very tiling to catry out the plans of Satan, as it fits men to become his pliant tools, by searing the conscience, and paralyzing the moral faculties. Alcohol, on the contrary, his an ef f t to deaden the intellectual faculties, while the moral faculties are less uf/ feted. This is seen in the fact that drunkards aro often very sane on rcli* gious subjects after their capacity for purely intellectual effort has collapsed Could all see the ruin consequent up. on the use of these stimulants, they would shudder at the thought of intro ducing snch an agent as tobacco or al cohol into tho human system. Tobacco-user, if you would break off from this destructive habit, open your eyes to sec, and your ears to hear, wo beseech you in the name of all that is go >d. —Health Reformer. Seip Wheat.—The time if? rapidly approaching for selecting and sowing winter wheat. Selections should be made as soon as possible. The plump est, and ripest should be selected fo; and before sowing, the seed wheat should be run through the fan several times so as to procure tho heaviest and largest grains. It it generally conceded that early v boas does tho best. It is more apt to - cope injury from insects, and becomes letter and more deeply rooted before winter sets in. The old way of sowing wheat broad cast is pretty well gone out with the better class of farmers, and the drill is now generally used saving nearly half the quantity of seed. llog CiiOLEttY.—Give the hog a ta blespoonful of soda in some meal, every morning till relieved. 1 have known Homo of the most remarkable results from this simple treatment. I will give you one instance : After relieving my hogs with it, a friend whoso hogs were dying very fast, and had lost seventeen cut of thirty of his hogs, tried it and did net lose another hog, although some of them were very bad off —A.U.Brad ford, Brownsville Tain. Ledbugs.—Boil some bits of alum in a pint of water, and wash over the slates of the bedstead. Scatter Paris Green in the corners of tho beds and on the slats, and you need never fear the reproach of harboring bedbugs. To kill and drive away cockroaches crick ets, etc., scatter powered borax plenti fully over all their haunts, and not a bug will be seen. Scotch snuff will al so kill crickets, cockroaches, ants etc. — Manure. —Fifty fowls will make, in the roosting house alone, one-half ton per annum of the lest manure, in the world. Hence fifty fowls make more than enough to manure an acre of land, 7 cwt of guano being the usual quanti ty auplieii per acre, and poultry manure is Known to be still richer in ammonia atib fertilizing salts. No other stock will give au equal return in this way; and the figures will demrnd eareful ah tention ,roin tho largest farmer, 'the bird that don’t get up early enough to catch the worm is recom mended by farmers to try try potato bug* — Seabiught Bantams.—These little i wls arc noted for their plumage.— j Bey are not only beautiful, but are gieut layer**. jlMu never lose by doing a good urn. w:- jou! knowledge is fire with out light. THE NEW FAMILY SIGNER Sewing Machine. WITH ATTACHMENTS For All Kinds of Work, is f.?.st winning favor in the household, as shown by the rapidly increasing sales. This ftevv Family Machine is capa ble of a range and variety of work such a was oncO thought impossible to perform by machinery. We claim and can show that it is the chcapc'jt, most beautiful, delicately arranged, nicely adjusted, easily operated, and smoothly running of all the family sewing machines. It is remarkable, not only for the range and variety of its sew ing, but also for the variety and different kinds of texture whicn it will sew with equrl facility and perfection, using silk twist, linen, or cotton thread, fine or coarse, making the inter-clastic lock stitch, alike on both sides of the fabric sewn. Thus, beaver cloth, or leather, may be sewn with great strength and uniformity of stitch , and,i n a moment, this willing and never wearying instrument may be adjusted for fine work on gauze or gossamer tissue, or motuckingi of tarlatan, or ruffling, cr al most any other work which delicate fingers have been known to perform. Ours having long been the popular and practical machines for manufacturing pur poses, some dealers, using ‘- the tricks of trade,” take advantage of this ia trying to persuade purchasers that our Family Ma chine-is not. equal, for family sewing to our Manufacturing Machines for manufacturing purposes. But purchasers—and they are apt to examine carefully before choosing— have not been merely persuaded, but con vince.! that our new family machine embod ies sew and essential principles—simplicity of construction; ease of operation; uni formity of precise action at any speed ; ca pacity ferriage and variety of work, fine or coarse -leaving all rivals behind it. Sewing Machine Sales of 1874. Tho table of sewing machine sales for 1871 show that our sales for that year amounted to 211,697 machines, being a huge increase over the sales of the previ ous year. The table shows that our sales’ exceed tho'sc of any other company for the period named, by the number of 148,862 machines, nearly Three Times Those of any other Com pany. It may fie further stated that the sales of 1873, as compared with the sale, of 1872, show a relatively large increase beyond the sales of other makers. For instance, in 1872 we sold 45,000 more machines than any other company ; whereas, in 1873, the sales were And in 1974 our sales were 148,852 Mach iae sMorc Than A-Oiliest} Company, OFFICIAL REPORT. The following is a correct report of the talcs of sewing machines made by the lead ing companies during the past four years. A careful examination of tho figures will show that the “SINGER” have largely in creased each year, while, on the contrary, a corresponding decrease is shown in the sales reported by ail other companies. This is a highly satisfactory result, to us, and is only another proof that “merit always has its re ward.” Sewing Machine Sales for 1574. Machines sold.
