THE LAND OF FLOWERS. otca From St, Augustine. Augustine, Ft.a., Aug. 30.187 G. Editor Times : With your perm is - 6: n i will give the readers of your highly valued paper a few dots about this ai cient city. Jt. Augustine is a quaint, old town, built after the old Spanish style, narrow streets, with overhanging balconies from wh uh the inmates can converse with their neighbors without being very boisterous ; and is situated immediately on the Rlatangas river, fronting the broad Atlantic, from which it receives ca invigorating breeze. It is built par nlltd with the river which ruts North and South. Its length is about seven iur.dngs, and a wall, built of coquina a naive stone found in quarries in tais vicinity and capped with granite brought from Maine, runs the length of ■ h c;ry, protecting it from an overflow or t!o tide. 1 e wall is just wide enough to af- Fn tl room for a couple to walk abreast , • o ' find this a pleasant promenade of ■ lingo', especially so as the easterly 101 Zc p oy-s aiou and them, assisting mi. as it wore, io give vent to tiic •■oir.tis oi their innermost souls. 1 \ l ,‘ Nona terminus of IHc wall, y** ■ :l( ' iMid of iho town, anus Fort Marion, like some Grimal- f lO , ~V 1 l; F.s giim look surveying the • , '••* c< uid be written about 'his .uuciuic. which is the survivor op an hundred years, and which is tow the habitation or quarters of about so;., enty Indians, prisoners of war. Among them can be found some of the partici pants in the murder, which took place in Central Kalis.s about the year 1874, of that German family that resided in Morganton, Fannin county, Ga., about four years prior to the occurrence. Medccine Water, who, by all accounts was Hi ■ leader of the scalping party, is now an inmate of the obi fort. A'so the squaw as reported by Oath, trine, the elder one of the [girls recaptured by Romeo, to have struck her father, Mr. John German, in the head with an ;iko. All seem peaceable now, and will ing to extend to you their right hand when they meet you on the street or at their cells At the South end of the town is sit uated the Uai racks, where soldiers are garrisoned about two companies strong, who are here for the purpose of look trig after I nele Sam’s property and other work as emergency may require. Hence, you see, though Florida is re* constructed she is not entirely iid of military clutches; and worse than ail, not yet rid of that infernal scum, called carpet- baggers that infest the Stale Gopiiol. Rut the time i- t.eir at hand whea they will be compelled to make their exit from this State, and seek and find their just destiu , the fundamental regions where souls are cremated, and there burrow a small cell and have u hell of their own.
