CALHOUN TIMES LOCAL NEWS. In the Home Bulletin a meeting is called by “Man Domocrts.” Like the Floyd Democracy just now, tbis seems rather mixed. September has been putting on airs and giving us a little foretaste of win ter the past few days. The mornings and evenings have been rather chil ly* t Mr. Williams Watts announces his name in our columns as a candidate lor Tax Ileceiver. The voters of th e county should give him a good lift. lie jjggorty. Cantrell places his name before the voters of ‘he county as a cand : date for Clerk of the Superier Court. Young and capable, he will no.doubt secure a handsome vole for that office. In our absence one *f our printers in setting op the proceedings of the Dal ton Convention on the outside of this issue from the Constitution got the heading a little confused. The Floyd Democrav, dissatisfied at the action ofthe convention at Kingston met in mass meeting at Rome Thursday and put out Judge Wright as an oppo sition candidate for State Senator. Mr. J. Ti. McCoole announces his name this week as a candidate for Or dinary at the coming election. Mr. McCoole is so well qualified for the . position we bespeak fo** him a live sup port —in • —^ Estrayed.—A dark brindlccow me diuni size : with rather broad horns. We shall spare no pains on our part to make oar paper well worthy the increased support we are receiv ing. Attention is culled to the announoe* tnent of B.F.Hudgins as candidate for Sheriff Mr. Hudgins has been brought n O out by the solciitations of his friends.— IRT understands <he duties of the office ~nd would if cle-ted execute them fairly and satisfactorily. See hisauuouec. ment. Dabney and Felton. —These two candidates for Congress met here Tues day and discussed their relative posi tions before a laree gathcrirg of the voters of the county. We regret that we are unable incur rush this week to notice at some length the speeches. They were both able and wer oheered oy their friends vociferously. We call the attention of our readers this week to (he splendid advertisement of Messrs. Wilson & Wilson, who have just opened at the old stand of Shelor A Rankin an attractive general stock of goods. These gentlemen will offer to the trade in this section rare inducements and under their plan wiil be likely to build up a good I usiness in our town. In the first place they piopose to sell goods t at the very lowest-digit res, and will offer a mar ket far all kinds of produce, aud alwa}s allow the very bet figures ibr ibe same. The house is connected with that of A. T. Cunningham & Cos., Atlanta, aud are prepared to offer liberal advances on consignments of all kinds of farm pro ducts. Our farmers and merchants in the country will no doubt find it great* ly to their advantage to make an ear ly business acquaintance with these gen tlemen. •First in War, First in peace, and first in the hearts of the thousands who were once the victims of disordered liver and its attendant maladies such as Constidation, Bilious Fever Colic, dyspepsia,Sick Headache, Cbills, Rheu matism, Gout, jaundice, Restles.ess Rosa of Appet'te and Generaj Debility ‘ Fir< Tutt’s pi Is and the health and happiness,” i$ their motto. We, the Grand Jury, chosen and sworn for the first week of the Septem ber term 1870 of the Superior Court of Gordon county Gu. , beg leave to make the following general present ments : We find the public roads throughout the county in better condition than usu al, though we have some complaint in regard to the following bridges : One across Lick Creek on the LaFayette and Calhoun road ; me across jJrumwon’s Creek on the La Fayette and Resaca road and. one across Cedar Creek on the Spring Place and Cassville road. We respectfully refer the question as to the propriety of building or repairing the above bridges to the Board of County Commissioners, and we would also res commend to them that the free ferries now kept in the county be poutinued for another year. We recommend that the Board of County Commissioners use the utmost vigilance in seeing that the bridges hereafter be built, sirict'y up to the specifications of the contract before said bridges are received. We deem it safer to cross on a good bridge without a bend, than on an inferior one even secured by a bond. We have examined the dockets of the several Justices of the Peace and No tories Public, and find most of them neatly kept. Some of them ;re not suf ficiently explicit in setting forth the returns of the Constables and the date of tha condition of judgements. We respectfully call the attention of our Justices to paragraph 6 of sec. 467 of Irwin’s revised code. We find the books of the f trdinary, the Sheriff, and Clerk of the Superior Court neatly kept. In consequence of • much regretted fire which occurred on the niirht of the 3 inst. in the County Treasurer’s office, destroying the books and papers apper tainting to said office, we ...re unable to report the condition of our county finances. We find upon exami nation that he has neglected to compl with paragraph 7 of SoC. 553 of Irwin’s revised code, requiring him to file with tha Board of County Commissioners a statement of his account accompanied by his voucher? for the preceding year, together with his estimate of the in debtedness of the county for the ensuing year, and the means of providing there for. From the sworn statement of the Treasurer which is hereunto annexed we find there is $65.80 on hand. We have examined the books of the Tax Receiver and find them very neatly kept. On examining the jail, we find O'-e leak on the West side, but think no oth er repairs are necessary. We regret to find the prison rooms so filthy and badly kept, and recommend a thorough cleaning of dhe same. We also find one leak rn the South side ofthe Court House, anu some re" pairs needed in the plastering ( especial!y a hole between the jury rooms. We see that some of the chairs are missing, including the rockiug-chair for the Judge’s stand. We also recommend thao new steps be put to the front end of the Court House, extending cieir across the house. We would respectfully suggest to the consideration of our future legislators the prop’iety of extending the juris diction of our Justices of the Peace to criminal offenses of minor im portance In taking leave of his Honor Judge C. D. McCutchen, we tender him our thanks for the able and impartial manner in which he has discharged his duties, and the indulgences lie has extended to this body, and also to the Solicit l r General A. T. Ilackott I'of courteous aud polite attention to us. We hereunto attach the re ort of the various county officers* State of Georgia, Gordon County, To ll'. M.
