CALHOUN TIMES I.OCAL NEAVS. Alexander Murray. ])ied, in this county, on tho morning of tin 10th instant, at the ripe age of ninety years, Alexander Murray, grand father of the editor of this paper. The deceased was born in Halifax, on the peninsula of Nova Scotia, Sep tember 16th, 1786. At a youthful pe riod he began a life upon the waters, which, after a few years he abandoned for other pursuits in the old Dominion, where he married and moved to Ogle thorpe county, Ga., in 1816, to settle. Here he resided for a number of years, and afterwards became a citizen of Henry county, from whence he moved to this county, which he has made his homo forover twenty year . Deserved a tour in the war o ( ' 1812, and also in the war with the Seminole Indians in 1836,and often in his old age hewould re fer with patriotic pride to his earlv mili tary career; and when his country’s call was again heard in the late civil strife, though then beyond the age of 75, he joined a cavalry company before the close and was in several small engage ments. Though the advantages for securing an education then were not equal to those ot the present day, he informed himself on general subjects and on reaching the period of manhood, found h’mself mast r of his undertakings, the fruits of a brilliant perception and a giant memory. Taking hold of an idea and believing himself right, he clung to it with unwavering tenacity. Ilis spiritual ideas, though not in all re spects in exact accord with the most coin non opinions, he Was always ready to fortify with convincing arguments made substantial by years of scriptural study and careful research His reli gious opinions contained most points in harmony with the prevailing doctrines of the popular churches of this country, but in some few he differed, and men of all denominations listened with eager interest to his ideas, lie had read the new testament through one hundred and fifty times, and was familiar with eve ry passage beneath the Bible lids, be ing able to quote who’e chapters from almost any portion. When nearing the end of his life he had the peculiarity of mind to keep his age so that when asked lie would reply to a 'lay and hour, tie retained his mind unimpaired until within a week or so < f his death, and when the j last shadows wire closing in his career, j he w is conscious of the impending ter mination. but. dieudid not the struggle. When asked if lie retained the belief in which lie hud lived he r 'plied, “ As lir nas a rock.” His death scene was as a (ai'l.f u servant relying on (he gracious promises to thorn who fear and love the Jed. •• The Lord is always with me, '* In; said, repeated the following: “ The Laid is good, lie is a stronghold in the day of tiouble. lie knoweth them who put their trust in Him,” then with unmistakable evidences of a peaceful end he Lreathed out his earthly cxisv. tence for a brighter home in heaven, awsaasaitf Peterson’s Magazine for November is on our table, ahead of ail others. A comparison of the various produc tions wdl convince any intelligent per* son that the “Century of Independence” embraces the important documents to be ound in them all while it omits that which is superfluous and adds instead a vast collecti nof invaluable facts. WITH ATTACHMENTS For All Kinds of Work is Pst wiiitfing fa Cor in the household, as' shown by the rapidly increasing sales. This New Family Machine is capa ble of a range and variety of work such was once thought impossible to perform t j machinery. IVe claim and can show tluu it is the cheape:t, most beautiful, delicately arranged, nicely Adjusted, easily operated, and smoothly running of all the family sewing machines. It is remarkable, not only for the range and variety of its sew ing, but also for the variety and different kinds of texture wi ien it will sew with equal facility and perfection, using silk twist, linen, or cotton thread, fine or Cv,arseV making the inter-elastic lock stitch, alike' on both sides of the fabric sewn. Thus beaver cloth, or leather, may be sown with great strength and uniformity of stitch , and.tna moment, this willing and never wearying inst-uinent may be adjusted for line work cm gauze or gossamer tissue, rr motuckingi of tarlatan, or ruffling, rr nl most any other work which delicate fingers have been known to perform. Ours having long been the popular ar.d practical machines for nnuifi ctaring pur poses, some dealers, using *• the tricks of trade,” take advantage of this in trying t persuade purchasers that ettr Family M chine is not equal, for family sewing to our Manufacturing Machines for manufacturing purposes. But purchasers—and they are apt to examine carefully before choosing have net been merely persuaded, but cot; vinced that our new family machine eni’n-d --ies new and essential principles—simplicity of construction ease of operation ; uni formity of precise action at any speed; ca pacity for range and variety of work, line or coarse—lea ving all rivals behind it. Sewing Machine Sales of 1874- The table of sewing machine sales for 187-4 show that our sades for that year amounted to 211,G97 machines, being a large increase over the sales of tlie previ ous year. The table shows that our sales exceed those of any other company for the period named, by the number of 148,852 machines, nearly Three Times Those of any othe Com-, pany. It may bo further stated that the sale* of 1873, as compared wi,th the, gale of iH72, show a relatively large increas* beyond the sales of other makers. For instance, in 1872 we 501d*45.000 more machine- than any other company whereas, in 1 'Y, 3 k the sales w.ere And in 1874 our suras were 148,852 Machines Mure Tlinrr Any Other Company. OFFICIAL EFFORT. The following is a correct report of the sales o# sewing machines made by the lead ing companies dm ing the past four years. A careful examination of the figures will show that the “SINGER” have largely in creased cacli year, while, on the contrary, a corresponding decrease is shown, in the sales reported by all other companies.
