Arthur's* A Card. mwmm ml To the Voters of Gordon County : My Fellow Citizens :—I am before you the second time for your suffrage lur Clerk of the Superior Court of Gordon county. If elected I pledge you a faithful performance of the du ties of the office, and in tli 9 connection 1 wish to say a few words in explana tion, if not in extenuation, of my past course while in office. It has been re ported tha f 1 suld the office, which is not true, ad is calculated to mislead you. I will give you the •facts. In 1871 1 was induced to—use brandy for my health, which had been sadly im paired by exposure in Drison at Fort Delaware. In the latter part of 1871 my health became so bad (as I am now fully satisfied by using stimulants; that i found it absolutely necessary to quit the office in justice to the office and myself it was my intention to resign, and i so expressed myself, but was ad vised by good men to put iu a deputy for the remainder of the term. I acted ou this advice, and through Judge Fos ter sn cured Mr. J. M. Robertson on the following conditions: that he should pei form all the duties of the office, ex cept at the court terms, when 1 was to assist. I was further to assist at any other time if lrom pressure of busiuess he should require me, for which service he was to have all the emoluments of the office by him paying me one bun* dred and fiity dollars for my assistance, blanks, &c., on band, 1 expressly stating that 1 had full authority and control ot the office, and iu proof of this I took his bond with good security lor three thousand dollars for the faithful per formance of the duties of the office, and if he or i either failed in performing the duties 1 have never beeu informed of the fact. This is the plain unvar nished truth, and I am satisfied Judge Foster, D. W. Neel, Col. J. J. Printup and J. M. Robertson will attest to the same. And now, fellow-citiz ns, I feel able and competent to discharge the duties of the office in person, and pro pose to do so, if elected. I will further sav that I have faithfully abstained from all. tlu.t can intoxicate for three years, and intend to continue to do so through life, God being my helper. Mo_t of you have known me for eighteen years. \V it’n the one exception you cannot say aught against me, either in war or peace,- j and to tnat exception 1 wouli cite you to that memorable petition of the ed Master—“ Forgive uft our trespasses as we foigive those who trespass against us.” The question is before you” and ii vou thu k me unworthy your sup port, vote agamst me. My opponents are both worthy gentlemen, capable and qualified, but L need the office worse ttian either of them and led equally 1 as well quahfied. Many ot you I will be unable to see personally, as D requires all my time to support myself and fam ily, as 1 have no other means than my daiiv labor. I am, fellow-citizens, \ cry respectfully your ub dierit servant, U. A. Harris. SCHOOL BOOKS. A good assortment will be kept at the Cheap Cash Store of B. M. & 0. C. Harlan.
