C. A. Harris, I). W. Neal, A. Roff. Committee. Grand Jury Presentment. The (.rand Jury, chosen and sworn tor the “second week of the September term, 1876, of Gordon county, Georgia also the November adjourned term make the following presentments : W e find the road3 in good condition. y e hear some complaint in regard ltd the free ferric?, as to the ferrymerffand especially at Fite’s ferry, on Conasauga river. We would recommend the coun ty commissioners to see to the repairing of the flat and the grading of the banks! Also that the ferrymen be more prompt in the performance of rheir duties. We f uHy appreciate the convenience of free ferries and hope the county commissi n ers will continue them for the year 1877 and keep them in good order. We con- JiUr with the jury of the first week of September term in regard to bridges, and would call the attention of the com missioDers to the unsafe condition of Aesbat s bridge across Saliquoy creek ; also of Lovo’a bridge, it being iu very bud condition.- Some of tHfe sleepers rotten and, others broken. We would •recommend that the commissioners see that all bridge contactors keep them in safe condition We. think a change neccessarv on the road from Calhoun to Rome, near Ooth a caloga mills. The bridge across the ditch is dangerous where the new road intersects the old one on top of the hill, 40 or 50 yards east of where it now d>es. We fully agree with the jury of the first week calling the attention of our Representative to the propriety of giving criminal jurisdiction in all minor offenses to the justices of the peace in their respective districts. In our opinion it wuu'd be of great con venience to the citizens iud saving of time and money to the county. We have examined the diff rent offices of ordina ry, clerk and sheriff and find their books neatly kept. We have carefully exam ined into the financial condition of the county for the years of 1873, 1874, 1875, 1876, taking each year separately aud getting from the tax digest and the report of the tax collectors all of which amounts the tax collector informs us he has paid into the county treasury except for 1876. The insolvent list -as given to us by the collector being deducted for each year. Then we ascertained from the books of the county board the amount collected by the board and paid into the county treasury. Then wc ascertained from the books of the ordinary and county board, the amount of orders drawn upon the coun ty treasury in the above slated years, and from the minutes of the .Superior Court all orders drawn for expenses of that eouit, thereby get a full and com plete statement of all monies ex ept probably a snail amount paid in by clerk of the Superior Court ('or jury fees, Ac., and by ordinary and county board from retail and quart dealers as well as fr all farms of orders drawn upon the county treasury during these years, a full statement we give below as fol - lows : Ain’t collected for taxes.lß73" less Collector’s commissions,s 8,333 83 Am’t collected for taxes,lß74 less collector’s commissions, 10,188 G 5 Am’t collected lor taxes. 1875 less collector’s commissions, 8.252 40 Total for three years, i26,779 88 Amounts drawn out of Treasury.
