Dried Apple Pies.
I loathe, abhor, detest despise,
Ah uninate dried apple pies ;
I like good bread—l like good meat—
Or anything that’s good to eat;
Hut of all poor grub beneath the skies,
The poorest is dried apple pies;
(live me toothache or sore eyes
In preference to such kind of pies.
The farmer takes his gnarliest fruit.
’Tis wormy, bitter, and hard to boot ;
They leave the hulls to make us cough.
And don’t take half the peeling off;
Then on a dirty cord they’re strung.
A nd from some chamber window hung;
And then they serve a roost for flies
Until they’re ready to make pies.
Tread on my corns or tell me lies,
But don’t pass me dried apple pies.
An Old, Old Story.
The following is as old as Luther, but
is new to this generation at least. In
the town of Kenncbunk, it was the cus
tom, many years ago, for each family to
take turns in killing their hogs, so that,
by distribution, all could have fresh
pork the year round. One individual
who had enjoyed his roast pork, and
pork and beans, having bad many of
the like favors showered thick upon him,
thought it no more than right that he
should return the compliment to his
neighbors. Meeting a neighbor, Mr.
Gill by name, he told him that he
thought he should reciprocate; but the
great trouble was, bis pork was only a
little pig, and would not go half round
the village.
“Well,” said Gill. “I’ll tell you what
to do ; you just kill the pesky critter
and hang him outside your barn, so that
the people will see it, and at 12 o’clock
to-night you jest come out and take him
in, and swear somebody stole him—do
you sec ?”
“Jess so!” says the other; and straight
way slaughtered his pig, and hung him
in view of all passers by.
About midnight lie went to take bis
defunct s<pieeler in, when behold it was
missing. He went to bed, troubled in
mind and body, but on rising next morn
ing went to find Gill, and the following
conversation took place :
Mr. J.—“ Gill, my friend, by the pow
ers above, my pig, that I killed yester
day, was stolen last night.”
Mr. G.—“ You don’t say so? good
ness me!”
Mr. J.—“ Yes, I hung it out in the
barn, and when I went to take it in, I
found it gone.”
Mr. G. —“ That’s the way, keep it up,
keep it up ! If I didn’t know you were
lying, I’d swear you had told the truth!”
Mr. J.—“But I tell you, confound ye!
I’m telling the truth. My pig was
stole.”
Mr. G.—“ That’s it! How wonderful !
You beat the best actor I ever saw. It’s
a big joke.”
Mr. J.— "But, hang it, it’s no joke to
me. The pig was stolen last night, and
that’s gospel truth.”
Mr. G.—“ Well if you tell all the vil
lage with such an easnest manner, every
man, woman and child will surely be
lieve you.”
Mr. J.—“But I tell you—well no
matter.”
And Mr. J—left his friend G ill with
curses loud and deep. It transpired
that Gill was the cruel one who stole
the pig away.
Trouble on a Railroad Train.
The Knoxville (Tenn.) Press and Her
ald, is responsible for the following :
Wc learn that yesterday morning, a
hive full of the famous Italian bees, im
ported by Mr. George 8. Ruble, of Chat
tanooga, was shipped by express from
that city to a gentleman in Grainger
county. As soon as the train left the
station, the motion of the car being nov
el to the bees, this being tlieir first trip
on the railroad, a few of the “bosses ”
were sent out of the hive to enquire of
the messenger “why this was thus,” and
as he says, annoyed him exceedingly by
their pertinacity, “going for him” pret
ty lively, as his answers did not seem to
give them satisfaction. Now, if an ex
press company contracts to take a par
cel to a given point, it is, no doubt,
right that it should do so at all hazards.
But. although ‘‘business is business” the
messenger was of the opinion that bees
nests were also bcesnests, and if the bees
were to be taken as passengers in
his car. they should themselves con
form to the usual rules, which they not
seeming inclined to do, he decided to
put them oft’ the train as soon as it ar
rived at Cleveland. In carrying <>ut his
intention he was attacked by several of
the malcontents, and had to drop the
hive on the platform at the station.—
This broke it open, and in a moment
the released inmates rushed into the
passenger coaches in a swarm, and em
ployed the shifting moments in making
it red hot for the passengers. Hand
kerchiefs, shawls, hats, coat-tails, etc.,
flapped in all directions, and it is even
vaguely hinted that there was some tall
swearing done about that time.
A wealthy bachelor married, offhand,
a beautiful young lady whom he caught
inspecting cook stoves at the Maryland
Btatc fair. Since then you can’t get with
in forty utiles of the stove department,
for the crowd of pretto girls.
Tiit; Hartford Times replies to the
conundrum of the organ grinders : ‘‘llow
can I leave thee?" by saying that sev
eral trains and a boat leave daily.
There is such a thing as a man de
pending too much upon his means, and
too little upon himself. Small certain
ties. it has been observed, are often the
ruin' of man.
“Boy, why did you take an armful of
pty shingles on Sunday ?" “Why, sir,
mother wanted some kindling wood, and
I didn’t want to split wood on Sunday."
A WISE man carries his treasure with
in himself. What fortune gives, she
may take away; but a wise man does
not depend upon her mercy, and is there
4bre beyond her reach.
