SEA TOTUIS
T stood and watched my ships go out,
Each, one by one, unmooring free,
What time the quiet harbor filled,
With flood tide from the sea.
Tim first that sailed, her name was Joy,
Site spread a smooth, white shining sail,
And eastward drove with bending spars
Before the sighing gale.
Another sailed, her name was Hope,
No.cargo in her hold she bore ;
Thinking to find in Western lands
Os merchandise a store.
Tiie next that sailed, her name was Love,
She showed a red flag at her mast,
A flag as red as blood she showed,
And she sped South right fast.
Tim last that sailed, her name was Fa th.
Slowly she took her passage forth,
Tacked and lay too ; at lust she steered
A straight course for the North.
My gallant ships they sailed away,
Over the shimmering summer sea.
I stood at watch for many a day—
But one Came back to me.
For Jov was caught by Pirate Pain •
Hope ran upon a hidden reef,
And LnvetooK fire and foundered fast.
In whelming seas of grief.
Faith came at last—storm-beat and torn.
She recompensed me all my loss;
For, as a ea.igo safe she brought,
A crown linked to a Cross.
The Absurdity of Tight Lac
ing.
There would be no tight lacing if
girls could be made to understand this
simple fact—that men dread the thought
of marrying; a woman who is subject to
fits of irritable temper, to bad headaches
and other ailments we need not men
tion, all of which, everybody knows, are
the direct and inevitable product of the
compression of the waist. Men like to
sec a small waist, certainly, hut there is
a very great difference between the waist
that is well formed and in proportion to
the rest of the figure, and a waist which
is obviously and artificially compressed,
to the destruction of that easy and grace
ful carriage, which is one of the chief
charms of a woman’s appearance. An
unnaturally compressed waist is far more
certain of detection than a mass of false
hair or a faint dusting of violet powder.
The rawest youth who enters a ball
room can pick out the women who have
straightened themselves artificially ; and
there is no more ready handle for his
harmless jokes. ] f the young lady who,
to obtain the appearance of a dragonfly,
has been subjecting herself to considera
ble pain, and who has been laying up
for herself a pretty store of ailments,
which only want time to prouounce
themselves, could only see the stare of
scarcely-disguised contempt, and under
stand the scornful pity which greet the
result of her labor, we should have a
change of fashion —and it is merely a
fashion. There is nothing intrinsically
beautiful in an unnaturally small waist,
and if it were a fashion to go into the
opposite extreme women would see beau
ty in padded waists. It is a great mis
fortune that popular taste never alters
in this as it alters in other matters. Ob
servers may notice with what a regular
ebb and flow wide skirts and narrow
skirts alternate—how we have the peg
top garment of men followed by the sail
or’s wide ankled attire; how square
pointed boots give place to peak-toed
boots, and how the peak toes go out
again for the square-points. Through
all changes women remain true to only
one fashion. Whether hcr.elothiug is
as long and lank as that of a Grecian vir
gin, or whether she builds around the low
er half of her figure a rotund and capa
cious structure of steel, she is forever
faithful to the tradition of a small waist;
she will weaken, she will make her
hands red, she will incur headache, she
will crack her voice, and she will ruin
her digestiou, all to produce a malform
ation which wise men regard with pity
and fools with derision.
Remedy for Cancer. —Cal. Usscry
of the parish he Soto, informs tiie edit
or of the Caddo Gazette that he fully
tested a remedy for this troublesome dis
ease, recommended to him by a Span
ish woman, a native of the country. —
The remedy is this: Take an egg and
break it, pour out the white, retaining
the yolk in the shell, put in salt and mix
with the yoke as long as it will receive
it: stir them together until the salve is
formed ; put a portion of this on a piece
of sticking plaster and apply it to the
cancer about twice a day. He has tried
the remedy twice in his own family with
entire success. — A\ 0. Picayune.
It has also been tried on two cases in
Rhode Island with perfect success. —
Such a remedy is within the reach of
every one and should be known to the
whole world.
John T. Huffman. —This gallant
young American, the present Governor
of New York, has evidently the inside
track to the next Presidency, All eves
are turned to him as the Democratic
nominee, and if entered for the race he
is not apt to be beaten. The enemy
have never yet failed to bite the dust
under the weight of his stalwart arm.
Success seems to crown all his aspira
tions. Indeed, fortune seldom fails to
smile on such men as Iloffman. Few
men possess more to commend them to
popular favor and esteem. To line abil
ities be unites a dauntless courage, a
sp »tless character, and the energy us a
tornado in all he undertakes. Among
all the politicians of the North, we be
lieve he is the only one whose personal
character has never been assailed.—
'I he Radicals. thomsolvc>, like and praise
the man. and the elections show that
many of them vote fjr him, despite.his
uncompromising Democracy. The Rad
icals hate long since lost their entire
political stock in trade except Grant’s
military glory, and that overshadowed
and blurred by an imbecile civil admin
istration, in anything like a fair fight,
Hoffman would rout them in live-sixths
of the States of the Union. A general
amnesty would allow the South to put
second on the ticket some otto of her
great practical minds—such as Jenkins, j
or Johnson of Georgia—in which event j
a political ground-swell would convulse !
mid electrify this whole section of the !
I niou. —'Savannah Republican.
