Best Way to Sow Clover Seed.
Clover id undoubtedly thp pn it eca
ndnticftl and Valuable that can
ho. used in the West. We frequently
hear of farmers sowing clover seed, but
they complain that it don’t take, so that
they lose their seed, consequently, they
become discouraged, and discontinue
sowing their land, saying they cannot
afford to sow seed to be lost.
The price for seed is now high. The i
times are said by many to be hard. So
let us economize. If we should leave
the corn and wheat which we plant and
sow, lying on top the ground, they
wouldn’t take; neither would our cab
bages or radish, and other seeds which
wc sow in our gardens, if left in the
same way.
How your clover seed with spring bar
ley or oats (the former is better) imme
diately after barrowing the last time,
which should be thoroughly done, to
have the ground well pulverized. In
stead of the harrow, which will caver the
seed too deep, cut a large round brush,
(honey locust is good.) iop the inside
limbs to mike all boar alike on the
ground, and brush your clover seed in
the same as you would harrow your bar
ley or oats.
One bushel of seed sown in this way
on nine or ten acres of ground, will make
your clover thicker than the same quan
tity on seven or eight acres of wheat
ground left exposed to the drought, and
to the chances of falling into the cracks,
into which half of it never finds a rest
ing place.
Rules for Measurement.
The following rules for measuring
corn and liquids will be useful to many
of our readers:
1. Shucked Corn. —Measure the
length, width and depth of crib in feet;
multiply these three dimensions and
their product by eight; then cutoff two
figures to the right; those on the right
so many hundredths of a barrel.
Unshucked corn.—Multiply as in rule
first in the above example, and product
obtained by 512 ; then cut off two figures
to the right: those on the left will be so
many barrels, and those on the right so
many hundredths of barrels.
For grain, fruit, herbs, in house or
box, find the length, breadth and depth;
multiply them together; then annex two
ciphers, and divide the product by one
hundred and twenty-four. Answer in
bushels, pecks and quarts.
Liquids. —Find the length in inches
from the bung, the under edge, to the
chime; multiply it into itself twice, and
the product by five hundred and seven
ty. Answer in gallons, quarts, pints
and gills.
Measure three hundred and seventy
feet on each side, and you have, lacking
one inch, one square acre.
Winter Feed. — The Scottish Farm
er gives the following :
Avery good substitute for hay is com
posed of straw chopped into chaff, and
mixed with linseed, cotton-cake, maize,
peas, beans, or any other stimulant of j
this kind. This, it has been proved, i
will bo better for sheep and cattle than
the best hay, and it will be found quite
as cheap. A mixture of hay and straw
cut into chaff, bruised linseed soaxed in
water, making a thin gruel, which is
poured over the chaff; meal, barley, and
maize, dusted over this preparation, and
allowed slightly to heat, has been found
to be very beneficial for stock. Sheep,
calves, colts, dairy-cows, heifers, and fat
tening bullocks, devour this preparation
greedily, and animals can digest and as
similate such food to the system, better
than uueut hay, roots, &c. Wheat mixed
with chaff has also been found a valuable
substitute for natural food, and at pres
ent rates, it is not costly. Dairy-cows
thrive in a well-sheltered yard with
plenty of straw, and a daily allowance
of six pounds a day, of cotton-cake, or
lour pounds of linseed cake.
Blind Staggers in Horses.
A correspondent in the Kingston Rust
Tennessean writes as follows :
“l have understood that a number of
horses have recently died iu the neigh
borhood of Knoxville with a peculiar
disease, and somewhat similar to blind
staggers. Several horses have recently
died in this county. Having had some
experience in the treatment of the dis

space in your paper to tell if. so that
those having horses affected might profit
by it. If the remedy does not cure, it
will certainly do no harm.
