Troops for South Carolina.
A company of United States cavalry,
passed through our town on Sunday
night en route for the scenes of strife
in South Carolina. We van b lieve
there is but very little cause for quarter
ing troops in that State.
It is true there have been -some seri
ous disturbances, but a wise compliance
with the advice of Mr. Perry by tin
Governor of the State would forever
end the neceessity of garrisoning the
towns in that glorious old commonwealth.
Nothing will tend more certainly to keep
alive the annoyances in the. South, than
the organization and arming of negro
militia. The outrageous acts of armed
negro mobs have caused the troubles in
South Carolina. Their causeless perpe
tration of crime called loudly for pun
ishment, and the authorities, doubtless
accessaries, suite red the continuance in
crime beyond the endurance of the peo
ple; and the first law of nature—self
defense— -prompted active measures.
The people, Ku IClux, or by what spe
cious name you please have dared to do
what necessity demandcd, and the con
sequence is, troops are sent to protect
the loyal, ebony skinned negro.
When will radical persecution cense ?
The Fall of 1872. we think will forever
end the troubles occasioned by the and irest
curse that ever befell our country —the
radical party.

Shooting Affair. — We have re
ceived a brief account of a difficulty
which occurred at Murfreesboro on
Tfiursda} evening last, resulting in the
death of one person and the serious
wounding of another. The person who
did the shooting is Mr. Traylor, who in-.
Aided a mortal wound upon Win. Hall,
and seriously, wounded Mr. Maynor.—
Mr. Hall lived but a short time alter
being shot. After the shooting Traylor
made his escape but the officers of the
law were on his track, and it was thought
that-he-would be copter and. The diffi
eulty is sad to have originated in a law
suit. —-Lilian & American.

The law should be resorted to, and if it
is found to vary liom justice, then it is
time for the citizens to take matters in
their own hands. But when they do take
the law in their 4tends, let it be in
the broad light of day, and not in the
hour of midnight, and disguised. We
are amply able to protect ourselves, but
