Second Dentition .
This is a most singular and interest
ing process of the animal economy, by
which the roots of the temporary teeth
are gradually destroyed, while the crown
of the permanent ones developc them
selves, and rise up and take the place of
their predecessors.
This change comes about as the jaws
grow longer, and the system requires a
stronger sett.
The evil effects of second dentition,
compared with the first are very flight.
At this period the system has grown less
subject to morbid impressions, and where
the mouth has been rightly attended to,
but little or no trouble, of a painful
I character will be experience 1.
“As it regards the beauty, health and
durability of the teeth. ’ says a promi
nent dental author,‘-there is nothing
more to be dreaded, and at the same
time more easily prevented, than irreg
ularity in their arrangement In pro
portion, too, to the deviations of these
organs from their proper position- in the
alveolar arch, are the features of the
face and the expression of the counter
I nance injured.
“It is, therefore, important that the
mouth, during second dentition, should
be properly cared for; and so thoroughly
convinced is the author of this, that lie
docs not hesitate to say, that if timely
precautions were used t here would nit
be one decayed tooth where there are
now a dozen.”
“ Much harm,” he further adds, “it
is true, may be done by improper med
dling with the teeth during this period,
but so far from inducing a total neglect,
should only make those having the care
of children more careful to secure the
services of scientific, accomplished prac
titioners.”
This subjeet comes propeily under
the care of the dentist, as it is out of
the power of every one to conveniently
acquire the knowledge necessary for the
accompli'liment of this object. Though
the time spent in the acquisition of this
knowledge would more than repay any
having the care of children.
W e want a general diffusion of knowl
edge on the principles of dentistry. The
physician knows how much more read
ily he can control disease with the in
telligent patient than with those en
tirely ignorant of the principles of health
and disease. So it is with dentistry.
Lt is almost, if not quite impossible for
the practitioner, in any department of
medicine, to thoroughly and successfully
combat disease without the assistance of
the patient.
\\ e hope te see # these principles gen
erally understood, and then, and not till
then, will dentistry occhpy the position
it j ustly deserves.
