It was our pleasure to make a hurried
visit to Atlanta last week. It is indeed
a live place, full of people, goods and
business. Everything is on the “go
ahoad ” order. Wholesale houses are
doing a prosperous busines, while the
retail are constantly flooded with buyers.
No city, wc will venture to say, has
grown substantially great, so rapidly as
Atlanta. Ten years ago, when we. wore
forced to leave college on account of se
cession, it was our pleasure to meet
with a dear friend, then in the depot of
the State Road, Mr Jno. Brown, who
showed us through the then young citv.
which was comparatively a collection of
frame buildings with a moderate run of
trade. About its history, growth etc.,
till Sherman made of it a mass of ruins,
wc know but little. Since then how won
derfully rapid has been strides towards
becoming one of the most thriving in
terior cities on.the continent Her di
versified labor, furnishing employment
for thousands of hands, enabling her to
compete with older manufacturing cities,
has given a name and patronage, truly
enviable, and of which all Georgia is
proud. Her wholesale dealers, buying,
direct from manufacturers, can duplicate
New York hills, thereby saving to the
' ratail trade expense of travel to and
j from New lork and vast amount ot
freight
We paid our respects to the press
briefly and so far*as we could ascertain
matters in this were well. It is t
this branch of Atlanta enterprise, tha
the city, in a great measure owes hi
unparallelled prosperity. While th
Sun shines, like 7\ ue Georgians, th
p ople will stand by the Constitute,.
and ere long, we predict, will comments
anew I'ra The Kimball House and
the new car shed, about which so much
has been written, are stupendous and
add not a little to the attractions of the
city. We wish her greater growth and
continued abundant prosperity.
Shocking Accident.
Bowdon, Ga.. March 28. 1371.
Mi?. Editor: Ycsterda , 27th, was
a sad day in Bow d»n Mr G. R. Brown,
a most excellent citizen and member of
the Methodist Protestant Church iu
this place, arose before sunrise, after a
night of quiet repose with his family,
and just as he was kin Ring a fire in his
sleeping ch itnber, heard a pistol fire.
llis wife, still in the bed near by. asked
him what the noise was. He replied
that someone was shooting outside.—
Just at this moment he heard his son.
John A., about twelve years of age. sleep
ing with his y ungor brother in an ad
joining room, exclaim, “ Papa somebody
did shoot.” This rather confirmed his
(■pinion that the shooting was out
sidj, but immediately he heard a groan
ing and struggling in the same room,
and, on entering found Johnny shot in
the breast, saw him gasp once—he
breathed no more. •
Still thinking that someone shot from
outside, he examined the windows to see
if they were perforated. Find ng no
sign, he returned to the bed and found
by the side of his dead son a small rifle
pistol ; the fatal instrument.
This weap >n, it seems, has been in the
hands of boys for some time, traded,
loaned or otherwise pissed from one to
another. Johnny had procured it the
previous day, and now. perhaps f r the
first and only time, had c irried it home
with him. Ilis father had frequantly
lectured him about the danger of hand
ling pistils, and he kept it concealed.
On yesterd iy morning, bes ra rising
from the bed. he began to tamper with
it; perhaps trying to make it stand
cocked, which it would not do unless it
was held verticle with the muzzle and >wn.
Ilis little brother stites th.it Johnny
put it mid t tha mattress when he went
to bed. This is all we can conjecture
as to the manner of the acrid nt. but it
is too evident th it the pistol was the
cause of his death. The bill pierced
his heart and nearly all the bleeding
was internal —Xcvnan Ifcrahl
