I®** We were shown, a day or two
since, by our estimable fellow citizen,
Mr. Jno. Jones, a letter from his son,

from the damage to the growing crops |

represents things, as in a prosperous j
Condition. Decent rains were doing i

Shame, Shame, that there is yet
such total indifference on the part of
the citizens of Calhoun to the building
of a good, decent, respectable church |
house. We are informed that a gentle- ;
man, wishingto locate in our town, but j
a few days since, was here, and among \
many inquiries, he asked about church- j
es; being at the depot, the church was
{minted out to him to form hi

went hack home; reflecting pensively
about the richness of our lands and our
miserable churches, lie is not going to
move to this place yet. For decency’s
sake, let us have a church building.

House. —The House received a mes

agreement to the conference report on
the Kn-Klux bill, and the passaged of

TIIE KU-KLUX FINALE.
Mr Poland presented the report of
the Conference Committee on the Ku-
Klux bill, and considerable debate en
sued.
Mr Beck, of Kentucky, said a distin
guished Federal General told him last
night that this law would exclude over
half of his army corps from the jury
box, because they had emptied their
haversacks to a number of Confeder

Mr Butler, of 31 assaehusette, thought
the substitute for the Sherman amend
ment utterly fruitless, useless, a mere
delusion.
Mr. Schofield —H meant nothing and
was designed to mean nothing.
Finally the report was agreed to by a
strictly party vote ; yeas 93, nays 74.
The Senate concn’rreitt resolution for

A Little Story on Grant. —The
Roanoke (Va.) Times publishes the fol
lowing :
A good story is told by cne' of the
Methodist ministers now in this place
Attending conference. We do not re
collect of ever seeing it in print, and
we think it too good to be lost. It is as
follows :
During the war a “ Cotifed. ” was cap
tured by the Yankees, and happened te
be taken to Gen. Grant’s headquarters.
After being questioned by the General,
the “ Confed, ” asked him where he was
going.
“ I am going, ’ says Grant, “ to Rich
mond, to Petersburg, to Heaven, and it
may be I will go to hell. ”
After eyeing the General for several
moments, the old “ Confed ” said :
“ General Grant, you can’t go to Rich
mond, for General Lee is there; you
can’t goto Petersburg, for General Beau
regard is there ; you can’t go to Heaven,
fur Stonewall Jackson is there ; but, as
to going to hell, you may get there, for
I know of no Confederate in that re
gion. ”
Coffee county has a curiosity known as
the “ Confederate Baby. ” He was born
in 1861. and weighs two hundred and
ten pounds. She claims the champion
ship on this production.
